QUICk HITTERSBelow is a snapshot of each of FGCU’s four returning
starters with notes from the 2012-13 season.
Ave Maria is an NAIA (National Association of Intercol-legiate Athletics) school which competes in the Sun Conference and has an enrollment of roughly 1,000.
Founded in 2003, the university moved to its perma-nent campus in Ave Maria (20 minutes east of Naples) in 2007.
Ave Maria dropped its first three games but is coming off a 61-60 win over Edward Waters Thursday night in its home opener.
Matt Chattin surpassed the career 1,000-point plateau in that game as he scored a team-best 23 points.
Chattin leads the Gyrenes with 22.5 points per game, and Wendell Powell is the lone other double-figure scorer at 10.3 per outing.
Powell paces Ave Maria in rebounding at 6.5 a game while Jelani Bonner corrals an average of 5.3 per contest.
Head coach Ken Dagostino played at Iona – FGCU’s next home opponent – and was the captain of the 2006 MAAC championship team which lost in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament to 4th-seeded LSU.
F G C U grabbed 19
offensive re-bounds at Fur-
man last Friday night, tied for the
second-most in non-conference D-I history.
The 19 offensive caroms versus the Paladins led to 12 second-chance points, double the six FGCU had com-bined to total in its first two games of the
campaign.

Division-I Program Record
*FGCU’s first D-I season was 2007-08.
The Golden BoyAgainst Hartford last Tuesday morning in front of a national TV audience on ESPN2, FGCU’s lone senior Chase Fieler put up, statistically, the greatest single-game performance in Division-I program history.
With his 15-point performance Mon-day night against Eckerd, Chase Fieler moved up two spots on the program’s all-time scoring list from 9th to 7th with 878 career points. That total puts him right behind teammate Bernard Thomp-son who is in 6th place with 936; the guard did not dress versus Eckerd as he rested an ankle injury that he played through the first three games of the year.

Additionally, for the first time ever, all home games not on TV will be streamed live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app or ASun.TV. Saturday night’s contest versus Ave Maria will be shown for free on ASun.TV.
Last Friday’s game at Furman was the third consecutive contest on national or regional TV to start the year for the Eagles as it aired on CSS. FGCU’s first game appeared nationally on the Big Ten Network before last Tuesday’s Breakfast at the Beach early-morning affair was broadcast live on ESPN2.

FGCU ATHLETICSDID YOU KNOW? • FGCU has won a combined 30 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 6 years in Division I as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference & Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association.
• In just 2 YEARS of Division I postseason eligibility, FGCU has sent 7 TEAMS to the NCAA Tournament, while men’s golf and women’s swimming have had an individual participate in their respective NCAA Championship each year.
• Backed by four Atlantic Sun regular season crowns and four more teams that finished in the top 3 of the conference standings, FGCU SWEPT all three of the A-SUN ALL-SPORT races in 2012-13. The four A-Sun regular season titles were tied for a league-high, while the Eagles are just the second A-Sun member to sweep the three All-Sport races.
• After becoming the first team into the NCAA field of 68 by winning the A-Sun Tournament, the FGCU men’s basketball team became the FIRST NO. 15 SEED IN NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY to advance to the SWEET 16. The Eagles became the Cinderella of the 2013 dance, as they defeated No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego State. The team’s up-tempo style and refreshing charisma resulted in Fort Myers being called “Dunk City.”
• FGCU women’s basketball was just the second A-Sun team to produce a perfect conference regular season in 2011-12, going 18-0, but it became the first to do so in back-to-back seasons with its second straight 18-0 mark in 2012-13. The Eagles A-Sun regular season crown was their third in the last six years.
• FGCU’s 53 combined wins in men’s and women’s basketball in 2012-13 was the 9TH-BEST total in the nation, while it joined Duke, Louisville and Gonzaga as the only schools with at least 26 wins in both.
• In the fall of 2012, FGCU swept the A-Sun team sports regular season, taking home the men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball crowns. For the second straight year, FGCU was the ONLY Division I school to win its conference regular season and postseason tournament in both men’s and women’s soccer.
• FGCU’s student-athletes achieved a record 3.31 CUMULATIVE GPA in the Spring of 2013 semester.
