Safety and Usage Guidelines
When running an automated machine tool, safety is of utmost importance. For
proper and safe use of the FlashCut CNC program and your CNC machine, the
following safety guidelines must be followed:
1. Never let the machine tool run unattended.
2. Require any person in the same room as a running machine tool to wear safety
goggles, and to stay a safe distance from the machine.
3. Allow only trained operators to run the machine tool. Any operator must have:
Knowledge of machine tool operation.
Knowledge of personal computer operation.
Knowledge of Microsoft Windows.
Good common sense.
4. Place safety guards around the machine to prevent injury from flying objects. It
is highly recommended that you build a safety shield around the entire tool
envelope. If your machine came with a safety hood, ensure that the hood is
closed at all times. The machine or spindle should never be on while the hood is
open.
5. Never place any part of your body within the tool envelope while the machine is
online, since unexpected machine movement can occur at any time.
6. Always keep the tool envelope tidy and free of any loose objects. Clean the
machine regularly and remove chips and dust deposits.
7. Be alert for computer crashes at all times.
8. The machine must not be operated in combustible atmosphere.
9. Ensure sufficient ventilation for dust or gas resulting from cutting your parts.
10. Do not use alcohol as coolant (danger of explosion!).

Lathe Preparation:
1) First verify that the lathe is unplugged and free of any debris.
2) Begin by removing the control panel.
a. Remove the selector knobs by punching out the pins.
b. Remove the 11 screws holding the control panel to the lathe. Save the
screws to mount a replacement panel in later steps.
c. Disconnect the “emergency stop switch” and “on push button switch” from
the backside of the panel by backing out the two screws on each switch.
d. Disconnect the “motor rotation switch” by removing the screw in the

switch knob. Then pry the cover off of the switch with a small flathead
screwdriver. Finally remove the four screws that hold the switch to the
control panel.
e. Unscrew the nut and bolt that fix the ground wires to the control panel.
Now the control panel should be completely removed from the lathe
leaving the switches and wiring exposed. Be sure to keep all of the
hardware from the switches seeing as you will need them to reinstall the
switches in later steps.
3) Next drain the oil from the gear box and remove gear train to the spindle.
a. Unscrew the cover that houses the belts and pulleys. This will allow you to
remove the set screw and drain the oil in the gearbox.
b. To remove the gear train to the spindle, begin by removing the gear shown

in the bottom right of the picture below by pulling it off of the shaft.
c. Next back out the set screw on the gear assembly shaft clamp and remove
the assembly, then remove the bearing block.
4) Now that the oil has been drained, remove the cover to the gearbox.
5) Now take out all of the gears. The driven pulley for the Z-axis will be installed
on the shaft that is pinned to the lead screw, so be sure to keep it separate from
the other components.

a. First, remove the pin connecting the lead screw to the drive shaft that
enters the gearbox. Remove the bearing retainer from the other end of the
lead screw. Now unscrew the three screws holding the other bearing
retainer to the machine.
b. Now remove all of the internal gearing and shafts leave the gearbox
compartment empty as shown below. Set aside the 22 tooth gear shaft
that pairs with the lead screw but first remove the 44 tooth keyed gear
from the end of the shaft (opposite the mating side of the shaft).
6) Remove the X-axis hand wheel and remove the screws from the X-axis bearing
block.

Pre-Assembly 1) Prepare the X-axis bracket assembly
a. Begin by installing the 20 tooth pulley on the motor shaft with the hub of
the pulley down towards the motor flange and then tighten the set screw.
Mount the motor to the bracket with the cable in the same direction from
center as the access holes.
b. Next use the ¼-20 button head screws and the ¼-20 serrated locknuts to
fasten the motor to the bracket in the inner most position of the slots. Then
add the round plastic plugs to the acces holes on the back of the bracket.
2) Prepare the Z-axis assembly
a. Add the 15 tooth pulley to the motor shaft, with the hub of the pulley
toward the motor flange, and tighten the set screw. Mount the motor to the
bracket with the ¼-20 button head screws and serrated lock nuts.

b. Next mount the motor bracket to the gear box cover using the 8-32X1
SHCS.

Cleaning / Maintenance
Switch off the main power before any cleaning and any maintenance. Also,
pull the power plug in order to prevent inadvertent starting.
Clean the machine regularly of all chips with a brush or vacuum cleaner (Do not
use compressed air) to protect the mechanics against early wear.
Lubricate the ways when needed.
