In both cases famine conditions forced a move to Egypt where they were victimized/enslaved by their hosts and subsequently released - forcefully - as a result of G-d's miraculous intervention, leaving with wealth and glory. Yet there is a significant difference between the two stories. The Pharaoh of Avraham's time re- sponds immediately to G-d's intervention. As soon as a plague strikes his house he recognizes on his own why and from where it is coming, and immediately sends Avraham and Sarah on their way. By contrast the Pharaoh of Moshe's time is virtually unresponsive to the plagues. Whether it is his own stubbornness or G-d's 'hardening of his heart", his obstinacy creates a new sub-plot to the story of the Exodus, the give-and- take "shuttle diplomacy" surrounding the Plagues. Why is this part of the story not included in the pattern established by Avraham's experience? Who Is the Women’s Section For? And What Color was George Washington’s White Horse? In many situations, the women’s section of a shul may be empty during weekday Minyanim. Is it appropriate for men to Daven there at those times? I think not, for three reasons. Ideally, to be considered fully a part of the Minyan such that one’s Tefillah is part of the Tefillas HaTzib- bur, it is ideal for the participant to stand in the main part of the shul with the Minyan (see MB 55:52). The Halacha (Shulchan Aruch OC 90:20) states that one should fully enter the shul before Davening, not simply stand by the door, as this gives the impression that being in shul is a bit of a burden and he does not wish to settle in. This is often the impression given by those who do not want to sit properly in the main shul but “keep their distance” by sitting in the Ezras Nashim. The Women’s Section is for Women (surprise!). Many righteous women chose to come to shul daily in order to say the special “Devarim Shebikdusha” that can only be said in shul. It is well known that Rebbetzin Kanievsky z”l davened with a Minyan three times a day for the last three decades of her life. Although in many situations one may find our Women’s Section empty during the week, it may also be the case that a woman may wish to come Daven for part of the Minyan, only to find her section inhabited by men. We should leave it open and available for women to come when and if they please. Thank you all for taking this to heart and leaving the women’s section for the women. PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK THE PHARAOHS & THE PLAGUES
Our Sages (Bereishis Rabbah, 40:8; see also Ramban on Genesis 12:10) noted that the experience
of the Jewish People in Egypt is patterned after Avraham's experience there (Genesis 12:10-20). In both
cases famine conditions forced a move to Egypt where they were victimized/enslaved by their hosts and
subsequently released - forcefully - as a result of G-d's miraculous intervention, leaving with wealth and
glory. Yet there is a significant difference between the two stories. The Pharaoh of Avraham's time re-
sponds immediately to G-d's intervention. As soon as a plague strikes his house he recognizes on his own
why and from where it is coming, and immediately sends Avraham and Sarah on their way. By contrast the
Pharaoh of Moshe's time is virtually unresponsive to the plagues. Whether it is his own stubbornness or
G-d's 'hardening of his heart", his obstinacy creates a new sub-plot to the story of the Exodus, the give-and-
take "shuttle diplomacy" surrounding the Plagues. Why is this part of the story not included in the pattern
established by Avraham's experience?
Who Is the Women’s Section For? And What Color was George Washington’s White Horse?
In many situations, the women’s section of a shul may be empty during weekday Minyanim. Is it appropriate
for men to Daven there at those times? I think not, for three reasons.
Ideally, to be considered fully a part of the Minyan such that one’s Tefillah is part of the Tefillas HaTzib-
bur, it is ideal for the participant to stand in the main part of the shul with the Minyan (see MB
55:52).
The Halacha (Shulchan Aruch OC 90:20) states that one should fully enter the shul before Davening, not
simply stand by the door, as this gives the impression that being in shul is a bit of a burden and he
does not wish to settle in. This is often the impression given by those who do not want to sit properly
in the main shul but “keep their distance” by sitting in the Ezras Nashim.
The Women’s Section is for Women (surprise!). Many righteous women chose to come to shul daily in
order to say the special “Devarim Shebikdusha” that can only be said in shul. It is well known that
Rebbetzin Kanievsky z”l davened with a Minyan three times a day for the last three decades of her
life. Although in many situations one may find our Women’s Section empty during the week, it may
also be the case that a woman may wish to come Daven for part of the Minyan, only to find her section
inhabited by men. We should leave it open and available for women to come when and if they please.
Thank you all for taking this to heart and leaving the women’s section for the women.
