@TheGlenleighdenSchool

Dear families and friends of Glenleighden, Welcome back to Term Four. I have heard many wonderful stories fromthe students about their holidays. This term we welcome two new familiesto our school. Hello to Zachary and Seva who have joined Junior Schooland Early Childhood respectively. We welcome thesefamilies to our Glenleighden family. This coming Friday (18th October) is Developmental Language Disorder(DLD) Awareness Day. Did you know that 1 in 14 children in Australia haveDevelopmental Language Disorder? DLD is a condition that affects howchildren think about, understand and use language and, more often thannot, there is no obvious reason for this difficulty. There may be no outwardsign of disability and no obvious physical indicators of a problem. The termLanguage Disorder (LD) describes children with language problems, whichsignificantly impact their everyday life. Language Disorder can co-occurwith other conditions such as Autism, Intellectual Disability and DownSyndrome. DLD is recommended to be used for cases of LanguageDisorder with no other co-occurring conditions. For a child with DLD/LD,their language difficulties impact his/her development and ability to accessthe educational curriculum. On Friday we ask all families to wear purple and/or yellow. Students are towear their yellow sports shirts. The Victoria and Gateway bridges, andNigeria Falls will be bathed in purple light to mark this special day. Pleasejoin us on Friday afternoon at 1.45 for a complimentary coffee andcupcake, and spread the word of a disorder which affects so many people.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWSWelcome back to term 4 Junior School students! We would also like

to welcome Zachary and his family to the Junior School cohort.

What an exciting first week we have had, getting to see our friends

and teachers. Students were very eager to share what they had been

doing on the school holidays with each other and the adults in their

rooms.  All students have been getting back into routine and have

enjoyed participating in the Move, Grow, Dance program.

This term students will be learning about money concepts- what is

money,  the value of money and how we use money to purchase

produce and materials. Reading different materials to support this

area of learning will be explored e.g.   what catalogues are and where

these can be found (Coles, Woolworths and different retail shops).

Students have been learning about digital technology and have

engaged in group discussions about what hardware and software is

and how we use these. Some of the programs and Apps students will

be actively participating in will be Kahoot and Buncee.

Kahoot is a software used for game- based learning where students

can create their own ideas and learn about different topics linking

to an area of learning within the classroom.

Buncee is a web-based tool used to create interactive multimedia

presentations. The user can integrate content from both external

and internal sources as well as create content directly on each

slide.

COMETSWho knew Maths could be so delicious! The Comets have been cuttingitems to help them understand that a fraction is an equal part of whole. They enjoyed cutting up (and sampling) fruit and cake, and have also cutplaydough and paper shapes into halves, with some students cuttingthem into quarters and eighths. Students transferred the idea of equalparts to division where they have been busy sharing things into equalgroups. Our number studies comprise a range of levels, with some of us workingon matching numerals, number words and quantities to 10 or 20, whileothers are working with numbers beyond 1,000. We have been makingnumbers with blocks, Numicon and MAB, as well as reading, writing andordering numbers in real life contexts and other fun activities. STARSThis term, the Stars will be continuing to work on multiplication anddivision as per Term Three. In addition, students will also be focusing onfractions as well as telling the time and investigating the relationshipbetween units of time. The Stars started by completing individualassessments on multiplication and division. We are currently learningthat a fraction is a number that represents a part of a whole and consistsof a numerator and a denominator. The numerator represents thenumber of equal parts of a whole, and the denominator is the totalnumber of parts that make up a whole. Students are working at their ownlevel: while some students are focusing on halves, quarters and eighths, others are adding fractions and finding equivalent fractions.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS

The older Senior School students have hopped straight

back into work experience. Some students have returned

to familiar placements, while others are 'trying'

something different. A small group headed off eagerly,

albeit a little nervously, with Debbie on the school bus,

while others used public transport to reach their work

placement venues. When I arrived to 'check in' on each

student, they were busily completing tasks and chatting

with customers or staff. It was very exciting to see how

happy and relaxed everybody seemed, while also working

hard!

Placements include: McDonalds, Monsoon Hair Salon,

Endeavour Food Packaging Plant, E-Waste, St Andrew's

Hospital, Bare Bones Society Café, Burgerpl8 and Shingle

Inn Café.
