Textiles in India are madefrom different kinds of fibreyarns and threads. From thelast century or so use of manmade fibres like Nylon rayonand art silk etc. is also verycommon. However, India isstill known for its cotton, silkand to some extent wool also.New lines are jute, man madefibre like rayon and nylon.

Indian craftman and weavers and artisanshave been creating master pieces. Such masterpieces are used for decorating palaces, houses of Maharajas and princess. The Indian fabrics is also so versatile that itcan be used in all types of dress material.Indian textiles have anything andeverything to compliment each and otherfor home. Be it with exceptional materialor brilliant weaves, spectacular designs orbeautiful embroideries, Indian textiles willtransform space into a dream land, A landwhere class and elegance ooze out of everyinch, A land where royalty and traditiontakes on whole new meaning, a landwhere anyone will be lost in the beauty ofexquisite arts. The EPCH, on its part, has

worked out a market diversificationstrategy that is indeed paying off. We areexploring markets like Far East, MiddleEast, CIS nations and Central Europe. TheDirectorate General of Foreign Trade hasbeen requested to include 30 more productsunder the focus products list from thepresent 42 products The council ispromoting the Handicrafts sectorworldwide and Indian Handicrafts andGifts Fair is one of them. Theforthcoming (IFFTEX 2012) IndianFurnishings, Floorings & Textiles Expowould provide a distinct platform tothose specializing in the wide range ofhome furnishings. A focused show forthis sector, the fair would giveexhibitors a unique opportunity todisplay capabilities and fully exploittheir business potential.

India’s handicraftsare a wonderfulworld of creativity,

unsurpassed in any corner ofthe world. This creativity hasdeveloped through centuries asour civilization has progressed. In our country each district or aregion has developed its owndistinctive form of handicrafts. One aspect that is significant isthat handicrafts-manufacturingis a labour-intensive industry;simply put, this sector gener-ates enormous employment. Most artisans work in theirown environment and it hasbeen our effort to provide themthe skills and tools needed toupgrade their manufacturingprocesses. In order to achievethis we have created clusters ofhandicrafts manufacturingunits in many areas. This con-cept helps to provide training, keep them abreast of latestfashions and trends and moreimportantly inform them aboutgovernment’s policies andincentives.

The government is verykeen to develop handicraftsbecause it contributes to betterthe lot of artisans in country. Our emphasis has been thedevelopment of product quali-ty as well as the developmentof designs because we feel thatthese two qualities are very important to enhance the marketability of Indian products. We wantIndian products not only to be well known but be of a high quality and design.

The next step is that these products need to reach the market, be it overseas or within the coun-try. The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts has been proactive in promotingthese products by holding periodic fairs and exhibitions in different cities in the country. In fact, this has been appreciated by overseas buyers. The EPCH has been searching for

new markets particularly in the emergingmarkets like the Latin America countries,Middle East, the Eastern European coun-tries, etc. In fact, we are trying to find newmarkets in countries that have not been hitby recession.

Our emphasis is on skill upgradationbecause we feel there is a shortage in skillsin handicrafts. Today, we are trying todevelop people with new skills. For thatwe have set up various common facilitieswith modern machinery. In addition, weare also setting up test labs where artisanscan get test certificates for their products. There is, however, more to be done. Though

Indian handicrafts hold a special place in theworld, it faces considerable competition — most-ly from other Asian countries. This is whereEPCH has stepped in to conduct workshopseither in clusters or at designated places where theworkforce can assemble conveniently to upgradeskills and in turn create products of higher quality.

It will not be out of place to mention the wel-fare scheme that we have launched for artisanswhere we provide free health insurance coverto craftspersons and their families. Theinsurance provides both indoor as well asoutdoor patients’facilities.

For centuries,India is knownas a country

for its rich arts, crafts, cul-ture, traditions, religionsand ways of living, etc.India is also known for itsart of weaving, excellentcraftsmanship, variety offabrics and textures, veg-etable colours, traditionaland ethnic designs. It isoften said that Indiandesigns, manufacturingtechniques, usage of rawmaterial, usage of coloursand dyes have their rootsin the philosophical andsocial aspects of severalyears of traditional ways ofliving. India is known as asynthesis of myths andimagery of various reli-gions such as Hinduism,Buddhism, Jainism, Islam,Christianity and later bywestern influences. Eachreligion had its influenceon the living styles of thecountry. Since these reli-gions were in differentregions of India, eachregion developed adesign, weave or embroi-dery peculiar and particu-lar to that region. Sincethen, the traditionspassed on from genera-tion to generation andfrom father to son andfrom mother to daughter. Most of the textilesin India are largely produced from cottonfibre. Other natural fibres like silk, wool, juteare also extensively used in making textiles.

The art of weaving and handcrafting hasbeen in existence in India for centuries. It hasgreat relation with religions, traditions, cus-toms, conventions, culture and availability of

raw material in different regions. Muslin in pre-Independence India, was bought by the worldfrom Dhaka. The texture and fabric ofMuslin was so delicate and light that it waspredominantly used by royalty in differentparts of the world for their dresses. ThoughDhaka is now in Bangladesh, the art ofweaving and magic of handcrafting is

India’s home furnishings vie for top honours around

the world and buyers will be able to experience the

“made in India” quality.

G&H widely available in India. India has diversi-

fied techniques of weaving and handcraft-ing textiles and made-up items.

The craft of Chikankari, for example, isprevalent in the region of Lucknow. Doneoriginally on white cotton with patterns ofstems and petals combined with flowers —these were excellent hand work. There aredifferent qualities and variety ofChikankari. Today, Chikankari work is doneon mulls, muslins, voiles, organza and onpolyester fabrics, etc.

Zari work is an embroidery with goldand silver threads. Now, these threads havebeen replaced by synthetic and artificialthreads. However, the artistry remains thesame.

Kutch embroidery has been a traditionof one of the nomadic tribes of India fromthe Kutch region in Gujarat state and are indemand the world over. Other techniquesused on textiles for a variety of purposesare block printing, Kalamkari, mirror work, appliqué work, patch work, crochet andlace work.

The range of textiles from India is verylarge. It caters for dress materials, garments, fashion accessories, home furnishings suchas bed covers, curtain material, cushion andpillow covers, table mats, table covers, wall

hangings, kitchen requirements such asnapkins, dusters, aprons, etc. as well asbathroom requirements such as towels, bathmats, bathroom accessories and floor cover-ings, etc. Indian textiles and madeups canbe termed as home textiles. The range is sovast that it caters to all requirements fromliving room to bedroom to the favouritecorner of the house.

India exports home textiles to leadingcountries in the world such as USA,Europe, Japan, Canada, Switzerland,UAE, LAC and Australia. Exports of tex-tiles have increased to the order of US$197.06 million which is 21.23 per centmore than last year. Exports havebeen rising year on year on an annu-al average of 12 per cent. The shareof US in the exports of textiles fromIndia is 29 per cent and Europe 39.64per cent. Home textiles are boughtbyleading department stores ofEurope, USA and Japan from India. In addition to boutiques, specialitiesstores, Interior decorators anddesigners etc. From many othercoutries. The workmanship, designs, colours, quality and the competitive pricesof Indian products have created a uniqueplace in the world market.

I am confident that thisshow will acquire thedistinction of a front-ranking fair of theAsian region. I am surethat it would provideinternational buyers theapt window to sourcetheir requirements andhelp them to establishan enduring and prof-itable business rela-tionship with their cus-tomers as well as withIndian exporters. Increased interest in home interior products

around the world has stimulated buying in what

is now very much a fashion-led industry and we

must keep an eye on trends to create a distinct

Indian market share.( )

Buy Indian, buy

exclusivity

India produces a wide range of homefurnishings ranging from householdlinen, curtain tapestry to yardagemade with several textures andvarying thickness. Home furnishing

products can be broadly categorised into fivecategories that include bedding, windowdressings, bathroom textiles, cushions andcovers and table linen.

The leading trends come from Europe, potentially one of the most profitable markets inthe world. Although, a number of countries inEurope faced the recession, the recovery

Home textile corr ok.qxd 1/6/2012 8:02 PM Page 6

Page 15: G & H

however slow has not seen any lowering ofquality standards in the home furnishingproducts. Today, Europe’s demands arecompetitive and sophisticated. To be successfulin such a dynamic market requires a keeninsight into consumer demand for design, quality, presentation and communication. Pricesmay have dropped due to the rise in the numberof orders but the demand for exclusive andauthentic high-quality home textiles that are alsoeco-friendly have increased.

Market analysts have predicted that the EUmarket for household and furnishing textileswill rise in the future and though a largeproportion of such textiles is already beingexported from India, the quantities are expectedto rise further. That will primarily be due to therising prices of Chinese products, which willmake EU customers to look for outsourcingpossibilities in India.

Among the countries that top the list for

Indian home furnishings exports isGermany with France and the UKcoming close. Other importantmarkets are Italy, Spain andBelgium. The household andfurnishing textiles market in the EUhas experienced a non-stop, butslow growth for many years.Demand patterns varysubstantially due to differences inculture, traditions and tastes.

The bulk of household andfurnishing textiles purchased inthe EU during any particularyear is basically forreplacement purposes ratherthan constituting a primarypurchase. Most householdand furnishing textilespurchases are made toreplace unfashionable or oldproducts and during therecession, such purchaseswere deferred.

One of the most importantfactors that exporters fromIndia must remember is theclimate of the country theproducts are meant for. This isespecially true of bed linen, furnishing and floor coveringtextiles. The colder climate ofnorthern Europe in contrast to thesouthern regions is a factor whichstrongly contributes to the high percapita demand of carpets andcurtains in Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands and other major marketareas like Germany, the UK andNorthern France. Additionally, a mildautumn or winter has a negativeinfluence on the demand forhousehold and furnishing textiles, while a cold or rainy spring orsummer has a positive influence.

According to estimates, retailers have plans for tighterinventories and would rely moreon suppliers to bear theinventory burdens. The longer-term prospects for the marketare more optimistic withmoderate growth forecast for2011-2012 when the economyis expected to regainmomentum.

FASHION TRENDS

In the home furnishings sector, fashion rules supreme. Today, furnishing lifecycles havereduced considerably toapproximately two years forsoft furnishings and five years

for carpets. Bed, bath, table and kitchen linen areno longer considered to be just plain utilityitems and top of the line designers compete witheach to produce and promote these textiles in abig way.

While there are distinct seasonal preferences, many designers create design schemes that arein consonance with various fabrics and housedecoration. While colours tend to be uniform inEU countries, design trends have become moreindividual. In fact, a number of distinct trendsare moving ahead simultaneously to form acomposite fashion flow. Home decor magazinespoint out that while brand awareness amongconsumers is limited, certain trends thatinfluence the demand for household andfurnishing textiles in the EU are noticeable. First, there is a rising interest in fashionable textilesespecially by the younger age groups.Consumers in several EU member states havestarted aspiring and become more Western intheir home interiors as household incomes rise.Added to that is the fact that there is a growingdemand for natural fibres mainly cotton andblends with cotton — indeed a significant fact tobe remembered by potential Indian exporters —in the household linen sector. Green consumersare on the increase with interest in products thatreflect care and concern for the environment. This is particularly true in the UK, Scandinavia,Germany and the Netherlands and fashiondesigners are increasingly using eco-friendlymaterials like natural fibres and recycledmaterials. Third and perhaps no less importantis the fact that consumers in Europe have becomemore price sensitive and more quality conscious.

THE TRENDS IN NORTH AMERICA

Across the Atlantic, in North America the recent

global economic slowdown has nudgedconsumers back to tradition and formality— aunion of industrial materials and 21st centurydesign. Consumers are looking for “useful thingsthat last”, and comforting influences, qualityclassics, fine finishes and “minimal luxury”.

The trends are moving away from the starkmodern look to a more eclectic style thatincorporates some richer and bolder mutedcolours, more textures, layers, and motifs fromaround the world. The colour palette includesmuted mid—tones across the colour spectrum, mixed with taupe and black. Exporters need tokeep in mind that worn, vintage accessories andframes are making a big comeback. Articlesmade with brass and worn metals — gilded, antiqued, rubbed — all of it, will be much indemand. Among textiles natural materials withorganic textures and finishes are even morepopular — like, upholstery and drapery innature—inspired patterns and neutral colours.

The movement is towards celebrating localcrafts and customs, but also boldly mixing colourand pattern in new ways. Products and materialssuch as bronze, copper, clay, cotton, linen andhemp — which are environments friendly, contribute to healthy indoor air quality, and can berepurposed or recycled at the end of their lifespan— are be in high demand. A renewed interest inhand-made textile techniques including braiding, knotting and weaving is on the rise. Chunky knitsare everywhere. Nature references, interlocking, matted and random patterns found in nature, interpreted in textiles and other products are invogue. Using natural textures like hemp, jute, organic cotton, recycled polyester, bamboo fiber, organic wool and linen, and soy silk will help keep itsimple but still green. Hand-made and experimentalmaterials are celebrated, as a “cultural hybrid”.

Gopal Maheshwari knows everythingthere is to know about the home textilesindustry. It seems inevitable after

heading the company named after him, GopalasTextile Overseas, for 20 successful years. Thecompany specialises in manufacturing homefurnishings, bed covers, table covers, andcushion covers. While supplying this delectablerange of products to countries all over the world,Gopal Maheshwari has noticed some trend,“Customers in Europe and Australia have asimilar taste and tend to order the same productswhile we have to cater to different needs forpeople in the Middle East and the US.”Whatmakes this enterprise so special is its emphasison manufacturing recycled textile products. Itsin-house design team wanted to be different andbring something original to its products, andhence the idea of recycled textile products wasborn.

The craftsmanship on the cushion covers, table covers, bed covers, and furniture is sodelicate that it is impossible to tell that theproducts are made from recycled materials. Thus, shopping with Gopals’s is doublysatisfying.

Bags are a woman's fancy. But AnitaAhuja from Conserve HRP has takencare to see that he pampers both the

genders the male and the female. He has createddifferent kinds of hand bags, computer bags andjust every kind of bag to suit the mindset ofpeople of all ages. And when you add strikingcreative designs to these bags, the result is a treatto the eyes and the mind.

Ahuja's Conserve HRP was born out of adesire to reduce waste, improve energy efficiencywhile helping some of the poorest of city's slums.Conserve achieves all this by turning plastic bagsinto high fashion. After much experimentation,Ahuja and his team hit upon the idea of notrecycling, but upcycling by washing, drying, andpressing the bags into sheets. HandmadeRecycled Plastic (HRP) was born and designs forhandbags came flooding in.

Ahuja has been meeting the demands for bagssince 2003 and his company has been exportingbags to the Netherlands, France, America andGermany. Creating bags out of different materialsand adding those creative designs together withhigh-class quality is what the company has beenable to do in the past few years. “With so muchsupport from EPCH especially at the start-upstage, it became easier to handle exports. Wewould probably not have been able to handlesmall but important issues without the help ofEPCH,” says Ahuja. The company is now lookingat introducing cushion covers in its list of newproducts.

Rajasthan!

TThe battle cry piercing thestillness, clanging of swords, soldiers making freneticattempts to climb the

battlements, thud of cannon balls and soundsof hooves of galloping horses — that wasRajasthan of yore. There was splendour, opulent living, magnificent palaces, large fortsand fierce battles. If you think there was bloodand gore only, think again. The rulers were alsopatrons of art, unique Rajasthani culture andcuisine that flourished under rulers, small andbig.

The palaces were embellished, elaboratestucco work and frescoes adorned the walls, waterfalls or fountains kept the courtyards coolin native ingenuity, ubiquitous sheesh mahal,or large room adorned with mirrors, held primespot in most of the palaces and least of all wereexquisitely crafted jewellery that the rulersdisplayed.

The history of Rajasthan is replete withvalour, a few inescapable internecine wars, and

a lot of individual heroic deeds. The forts, palaces and monuments are past and on thispast the foundation of present tourism has beenlaid. Today, Rajasthan is a hot and hautedestination in the world of tourism.

First-time visitors have one question: Whereto start in this land of splendour and awe? Is ita “golden triangle” circuit or a Jaipur-Ajmer-Pushkar circuit? To be frank, every corner of

Rajasthan is a starting point. It is often said thatevery sand dune in the Thar Desert has historywritten all over it. So have the forts andpalaces.

A tour of Rajasthan does not start, or end, with Jaipur, Jodhpur or Udaipur. What aboutKota, Bundi, Jhalawar, Jhalrapattan orShekhawati region that has a collection ofgigantic painted mansions, now popular asShekhawati art!

Jaipur, the Pink City, is sine qua non on aRajasthan tour. Till the beginning of the 18thCentury, the royals lived inside Amber fort andsubjects scattered around in hamlets. It wasMaharaja Sawai Jai Singh II who decided tocreate a new habitat and it was built under thesupervision of a young architect VidyadharBhattacharya and completed by 1727. This cityplanned on a grid pattern, stands in starkcontrast to the present haphazard growth, in alldirections, that is called Jaipur.

Within the hustle-bustle of the Pink Cityare several palaces, the stone observatory JantarMantar and picture postcard perfect HawaMahal, or palace of wind, a five-storey buildinghaving a façade of semi-octagonal anddelicately carved honeycomb windows. HawaMahal was built for the women of the royalhousehold to watch, without being seen, thelife on the streets below or royal processions. From the bazaar one can see the hillocks to thenorth on which are perched massive forts ofNahargarh and Amber (pronounced Amer). TheKachchwaha dynasty that ruled this region foralmost a millennium, uninterrupted, migratedfrom central India or present day Madhya

Pradesh. Down the centuries, as the dynastygrew, it splintered and the princes set various, but smaller, kingdoms or principalities butremained vassals to Jaipur's Maharaja.

A half hour's trip takes you to Amber fort, located on a hill, a little lower than Nahargarhfort. There are three ways of going up to thefort: by foot, vehicle or on an elephant. Thelatter is a favourite mode for foreign tourists, perhaps to experience the royal mode of travelbefore experiencing the royal way of livingwithin the ramparts. There is undoubtedlyplenty to see.

History buffs have plenty to savour withinthe fort as well as in other forts that dot theRajasthan landscape. There is, however, another kind of history one can go through inthe Shekhawati region, north of Jaipur. It is notabout the mustachioed kings on their horses, but business kings. Their names ring a bell:Birla, Goenka, Jhunjhunwala, Kajaria, Poddar,Saraf and many more have their origins in thissand-swept region. They have not left any fortsbut massive havelis, or mansions, decorated byfrescoes within and outside. In short, thehavelis could best be described as open air artgalleries.

Start haveli-gazing from Sikar, about 115km from Jaipur on NH 11, but be armed with agood map and preferably with a guide. Thoughthe owners of many of these havelis leftgenerations ago in pursuit of lucrativebusinesses, a number of these mansions arestill intact and the frescoes on the outer wallshave not faded. One guide proudly remarkedthat these were painted with vegetable

pigments and followed with a tongue in cheekremark, before British Raj came up withsynthetic paints!

Art connoisseurs would be delighted to seethe gradual transformation of traditionalthemes of gods, heroes, epics and legends tocontemporary trains and cars, figures of sahibsand memsahibs holding parasols with dogs onleash. It is an indicator that as decades passedby and interaction and association with theBritish followed, the themes changed withchanging times.

Look around: these massive mansions andthe frescoes flourished despite inhospitable,semi-arid surroundings. If you travel innorthern and western Rajasthan, to a moreformidable desert region, it would amaze you.In fact, a kingdom flourished in the midst ofthe desert: Jaisalmer.

This magnificent fort only comes into viewwhen one is at the foot of the hillock on whichit is perched. One is awed by its toweringpresence and as a traveller exclaimed,“Jaisalmer is a place that should exist only inthe imagination … The vision of Jaisalmer's

massive fort thrusting heavenwards out of thebarren landscape is unforgettable, and themagic doesn't diminish as you approach itswalls and bastions.”

This is a living fort, unlike many others thathave become monuments in the true sense.Present residents inside the fort claim descentfrom forebears who arrived here in the 12th or13th Centuries, after the fort was completed in1156 A.D. The wealth of rulers came from thetoll collected from camel caravans carryingmerchandise that crisscrossed the Thar desert.

Opulent palaces and havelis are amanifestation of that wealth. Old palaces arewithin the fort while havelis are located in theold township. Do not miss Nathmalji ki haveli,Patwon ki haveli and Salim Singh ki haveli. Itwill not be an exaggeration to describe them assymphonies in stone. Intricate carvings andexquisite filigreed work all over are indeedbreathtaking. Both for adventure seekers andlaidback leisure travellers a few kilometresbeyond Jaisalmer, Sam is the destination point. After an hour's drive to Sam, one would bestaring at the Sahara-like desert. The villagers

of Sam have suddenly realised the power oftourism and many have turned intoprofessional safari cameleers. Even a half-a-daysafari into the vast, open, monochrome sanddunes is an evocative way to sample the desertambience.

Chittaurgarh is one of the largest forts inRajasthan. In fact, inside the fort one can drivethrough to visit many monuments. Thoughsome of the palaces within the fort are in adilapidated condition, the other monumentsare still in good shape. Do climb Vijay Stambh,a 37m tall and nine storeys high tower thatoffers a splendid view of the fort as well as thetown below.

Forts, forts and more forts! Is there anything to see beyond forts? Plenty. Visit theworld famous and now a World Heritage sitecalled Keoldeo Ghana National Park orPushkar, famously known for camel and cattlefair.

Once a sleepy pilgrimage village with a rareBrahma temple and the pious visiting it duringKarthik Poornima, it has blossomed into aninternational destination during this period. It

is not so much the religious sentiments thatbring in tourists but the camel fair and thefanfare associated with it. Apart from camel orcamel cart rides, tourists truly experience andenjoy rustic ambience.

Siberian cranes, a rare and vanishingspecies, make a long haul all the way toBharatpur's bird sanctuary, Keoldeo GhanaNational Park. Winter is the season. There is anartificial water body created to attract ducks sothat sahibs of the Raj era could indulge in duckshoots. That intention aside, today, it has becomeunwittingly a World Heritage site!

While in Bharatpur a visit to Lohagarh, or ironfort, is a rewarding experience, although it doesnot match the grandeur of the other forts ofRajasthan. Forts were protective ramparts thatrulers had in turbulent times in the past. There isplenty of art to be seen within these forts. Theculture and cuisine evolves through centuries andRajasthan has plenty to offer. A visit to Rajasthanis never mundane and always exhilarating.
