From the early 19th Century through the early 20th Century, many hundreds of Canadian banks opened and closed, with those with the strongest balance sheets and careful, conservative bank officers surviving the boom and bust of an expanding Canadian economic landscape. These banks issued currency to circulate in the communities, counties and provinces they served. The quality of the currency varied, depending on equipment and resources available.

As such, enterprising and dishonest individuals took it upon themselves to counterfeit various currency issues in order to get something for nothing. Some counterfeiters were quite gifted; others were absolute amateurs. The most gifted executed steel printing plates, creating counterfeits that were quite deceptive. Others created wooden plates that were hand carved. The most untalented hand drew counterfeit notes on plain paper. It must be remembered that counterfeit notes in this era were made to deceive citizens, merchants and banks in the transaction of day to day commerce and not to deceive because of the notes’ relative value as a collectible.

It is as a collectible that we make reference to here. We all know that counterfeit Bank of Canada notes are illegal. However, for many decades, the collectability of contemporary counterfeit Dominion of Canada and Chartered bank notes has become firmly entrenched. Indeed, counterfeit Chartered bank notes have inclusive listings among the pages of the various banks where counterfeits have been seen and identified. They are also finding inclusion in the very latest Canadian Paper Money Society population report, although on a limited basis, thus far. What is surprising is that since the CPMS has published this data, these counterfeits are not as plentiful as we would have perceived. There are less than 20 reported notes of virtually every issue, with some issues, like the Union Bank of PEI notes having only 5 notes reported in both dates of issue.

Canadian Replacement Bank Notes are mostly an overlooked part of the Canadian Government Paper Money culture. The thought of Canadian replacement bank notes automatically bring the modern overpriced, plentiful dealer overstock to mind, when in fact, some of these pieces separate themselves as superlative, unique and underrated. Our current offering reminds me of the GOG note that we presented in our Toronto Coin Expo sale on May 30, 2013. These pieces have been set aside in an elite collection for many years and it's time to see what they are worth in a market who hasn't had such an opportunity.

These rare/scarce notes are presented in Lots #1457 and #1462 will command big bucks and demand the attention of Canadian rarity collectors, even outside of the bank note collector realm. These are investment pieces, better than money in the bank.

Contemporary Counterfeit Canadian Currency

The collection offered here will certainly increase the number of recorded examples known. There are also several unrecorded notes along with others where there was previously a single recorded

example. These notes offered here are all marked counterfeit and from the information we have been able to gather, were part of a much larger counterfeit note display at a U.S. banking institution.

My wife, Dawn, inspired me to write a different intro, as this is indeed a different sale. Firstly, we haven’t bid on a RCNA sale since 2010 and sincerely thank the RCNA executive in selecting GBA as the auction team to present this sale in our nation’s capital. This sale is a natural for us being the home of the Royal Canadian Mint and the Bank of Canada. We feel it is the numismatic hub, not only for the elite in collecting but the beginner as well. Bill Cross challenged me years ago with a seemingly simple question: what are your thoughts of this particular sale? I responded with “it’s a sale that reaches a select few, it represents a very few collec-tors in my opinion”. He smiled and said “take all material and serve all”. It’s why when starting out in 2008, I selected three very important mentors: my dad (Geoff), Bill Cross and Don Olmstead.

The richard cooper coins of The french colonies in america

Two references are mainly cited in this catalogue for the coins of French America. The first is the newly published important work by Sydney F. Martin, titled FRENCH COINAGE SPECIFICALLY FOR COLONIAL AMERICA, Ann Arbor, 2015, which covers the coinage exclusive to the French colonies in America. The other is the fine work authored by Bob Vlack titled, AN ILLUSTRATED CATALOGUE FRENCH BILLON COINAGE IN THE AMERICAS, The Colonial Coin Collectors Club, 2004.

The Cooper collection of Double Sols is an extensive one, and the determination has been made to include all examples, including duplicates, in this offering. The largest collections have mostly been gathered by collectors in the United States. Earlier Canadian collectors such as Doug Ferguson, John Miner, Maurice Lorrain, and Peter Broeker avidly put together collections of the different dates and mint marks. When I acquired the Miner and Lorrain collections of sous marqués they became the start of Bob Vlack’s passion for the series.

The Bank of Canada Currency collection contains the best collection in Canada of these coins, and several of the Quebec collectors have developed an ardent interest. On the U.S. side, Ted Craig, John J. Ford, Jr., and several others had important collections, and I believe that Sydney Martin has the most important collection today in the United States. Many of the pieces in this collection are from the Henderson collection. A continuation of Mr. Cooper’s collection will occur in the next Geoffrey Bell Auction in the fall of this year. The sol marqué of 1738-1764 from the Vlack collection, part of which was sold at Moore’s Sale on Feb. 19, 2009 will be offered as will the earlier issues of sols marqués. Mr. Cooper’s extensive collection of French coins, many of which had status in the colonies will be auctioned at the same time.

Note that coins with a dot below the D of LUD indicates that these pieces were struck in the second semester (July-December) of the year. I shall catalogue these as separate varieties. The practice commenced in the case of the sols marqués in 1739. The only mints of which no coins appear in this offering are for Bayonne (L), Perpignan (Q), and Bourges (Y). When referencing obverses and reverses of the double sols and sols marqués, I have transposed the order adopted by Bob Vlack, and followed that of the French authorities, Breen, and Michael Hodder. Only R-5 to R-8 have been noted.

john loye 1844 halfpennies

Richard Cooper’s remaining 23 Br 527 front view halfpennies from the Loye collection -- 18 of which are uncirculated specimens -- are offered in this sale. All but six of these 23 offerings trace share a pool of three obverse dies. Accordingly, the cataloguer has sorted these pieces into four groups: one for each obverse die and a final group for anomalous pieces, to treat the sale as something of a die study. A general description of underlying diagnostics for each die is given, with the lots arranged in apparent emission sequence, describing in sequence the progressive deterioration of the die on each individual piece. Unless otherwise noted, flaws described are on the obverse -- the reverse dies appear to have been more resillient and did not become as severely flawed.

group a – T Touches walk

GROUP A – T touches walk: The consistent diagnostic with this obverse die is a flaw from the upper right of T in Montreal, which connects with the lower right corner of the walk before the bank building. A light crack tracking horizontally from the bottom left serif of the B in Bank, and a small crack linking the middle of OV in Province are also omnipresent. Additional flaws are noted for each specimen as they developed. (Previous offerings from Cooper collection: GBA 12 lot 124; GBA 13 lots 740-741). Courteau 55.

group c – flaw Through province

GROUP C – Flaw Through Province: The key diagnostic of this obverse die is a faint flaw connecting the letters in Province, meandering through the upper reaches of PROV and later connecting the lower parts of VINC. In addition, a light flaw meanders diagonally and to the left from the top of the first A in Canada, and the lower right corner of the D in Canada connects with a similarly light flaw with the bottom right serif of the second A. A small rust patch is found between the rim and the K of Bank. The fields in the upper right quadrant all display varying degrees of localized mottled texture – I am unsure if these are the result of planchet or die preparation issues, though the consistency is noteworthy. All five specimens offered here are of substantively the same die state and accordingly all in effect conform to this general description. Conforms generally with Courteau 54, though I cannot quite reconcile Courteau’s description of “points of right ribbon are short” on the reverse when comparing this to other short-ribbon pieces, although the (long) right point to the right ribbon on these pieces is very faint and likely wore away quickly in circulation.

A previous owner wondered whether this was a proof – while an impressive piece, the weakness of the rims does not convince me that it is a proof strike.

The middle uprights of B and P are joined by a meandering crack that traverses the inner face of the intervening period. P and R in Province are connected by two small breaks in their lower halves, and a crack between O and V creates the appearance of a spike emanating from the left of the V. Die chips on either side of the O in Of, and the upper opening of the adjoining F is largely filled by a globular flaw. The piece merits some close inspection, particularly in and around the legends, as it has a less regular texture unlike the other uncirculated Loye pieces in this group – almost giving the impression that the fields (of the die, not this specimen) were tooled.

The railroad was the brainchild of James Ferrier, who became its first President. One of the two locomotives was named the James Ferrier. He was also Mayor of Montreal in 1845 & ‘46, and father of noted numismatist, James Ferrier, Jr. whose collection was catalogued by Sandham and sold by Cogan in 1871. This son, a virtual partner of his father, was also a founder of the Numismatic Society of Montreal in December, 1862. Sir George Simpson, Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company was, not surprisingly, a Director of the railroad. Barry Uman’s article in The Fare Box, Nov., 1977, republished in Atwood’s volume is a good one. The following extract from another article on the M & L was published in Canadian Rail, issue No. 177, May, 1966. In describing the grand opening, Robert G. Bales writes: The official opening of the Montreal & Lachine Rail-Road took place on Friday,November19th,1847.Atoneo’clock,atrain,carryingtheGovernor-General, Lord Elgin; the Hon. Louis-Joseph Papineau, and an influential party of directors, shareholders and politicians, left Bonaventure Station. The train went the eight miles to Lachine in twenty minutes, travelling at the rate of twenty-five miles per hour ... The Montreal & Lachine Railroad was leased to the Grand Trunk Railway in 1854, and sold to them in 1872. Fifty-five ride monthly commutation tickets replaced the old tokens as witnessed by an example dated October 23, 1918.

The cataloguer’s paper “Breton 701: Reflections on the Hart” (CNJ, Jan-Feb 2016, pp. 16-19) articulated the position that the early-state “Hooked Blade” pieces correspond to the Hart variety described by Breton. If so, the Charlton catalogue’s position that the Hart Variety is “extremely rare” is in error, as both varieties are equally common – though both states are scarce in such high grades and are seldom found better. 2 Pcs.

the exceptional rarities of the bouquet sous, and indeed the entire pre-Confederation series, missing from many major collections. According to Bowman (1955) “possibly a dozen known” – an estimation that has not been challenged. First offering of this variety by Bell Auctions. Last offering at auction was at the Roy Hughes sale by Hoare in 1995, and just five noted offerings in the past 51 years before this sale (1965 CNA / Charlton; McKay-Clements / Frank Rose 1976; Carney /Hoare 6, 1988; Oppenheim /Hoare 13, 1989; Hughes Collection/Hoare 32, 1995). The obverse is problem free, save for a small flaw to the right of T in “Agriculture” and trifling striking weakness in the “DA” of “Canada”. The reverse has a handful of small blemishes, particularly in the lower left quadrant, including one dig across the leaf to the left of the “S” in Sou, a small flaw next to the “U” of Sou, and a distinctive lateral mark to the left of the “M” in Montreal. A comparison of this specimen with past plated offerings the plates of past sales convinces me that this is one and the same as both Hughes and 1965 CNA Auction specimens. The reverse die is rotated approximately 20 degrees to the left relative to the obverse axis – a feature not commented upon in previous sales of a 703. Whether this in endemic to the type or just this piece is not known, although it is largely consistent with reverse die rotation of some early (cudless) strikes of Br 700, with which it shares a common reverse die.

Six are unquestionably the (common) Hart Variety with a blade of grass between the two thistles to the left (currently LC-33C1, previously LC-33C2: consignor attributed by earlier Charlton catalogue). One, grading about Fine and with some corrosion, was attributed as the “non-Hart” variety, lacking the blade of grass (currently LC-33C2, previously LC-33C1), though given the poor state of preservation I am not convinced of this attribution and the piece should be examined. Lyman Low, in an unpublished manuscript now in Warren Baker’s collection, addressed the 705 Hart Variety as follows: “I doubt if there is anything in it, probably flattery to H[art]. Dr. C[ourteau] gives it (26) ‘no blade between thistles.’ Doubted, the blade may be weak on some.” I am aware of no literature or specimen (including this one) which challenges Low’s thesis. 7Pcs.

A pairing of the “Large Ampersand” obverse of Br 714, Co 13 (CH LC-2A6) and the reverse of Br 713, Co 6 (CH LC-3A4), both dies displaying coarse lettering not noted on any other 713 or 714 dies, but apparently the same as those seen on others Belleville sous, including reverses of 675-683 and 685-686. This die pairing, not detected by the keen observations of Low, Courteau, Bowman or Willey, was first published by Harry James, “Mule of Breton 713 and 714”, Numismatica Canada, June 2009, p. 85. This piece is a distinct specimen from James’ discovery piece, having slightly more wear and looks to have been unevenly struck with weakness to the top legends. No known public sales of this variety since its discovery – an inaugural opportunity to own a scarce variety, the population of which has yet to be established. Conservatively estimated -- may the market determine the price!

BRASS AND “BRASSY” BOUQUETS. While “brass” bouquet sous have been reported by past cataloguers, there has been little systematic study of the composition of these pieces. Indeed, the classification of pieces previously sold as brass has almost without exception been to “eyeball” the composition based on yellowish colouration. The following five specimens, all attributed by prevoius owners as brass or possibly so, have been submitted for non-destructive X-ray fluorescence testing as to their composition. The results are noted in the lot descriptions. In the face of such testing there remains a conundrum of nomenclature: what qualifies compositionally as “brass” for this series? While brass is by definition an alloy of copper with zinc, there has been no established, accepted definition of what constitutes the metallurgical dividing line between “brass”, “brassy” and “Copper” in the bouquet sous series . The cataloguer has adopted the view that a piece must be demonstrably below 90% copper with zinc as the second most common metal to be “brass”. Proportions of copper in excess of 90% with zinc as the primary alloy are described “brassy”. Based on this somewhat arbitrary division, there is one brass and four “brassy” bouquets offered in the following lots. Future study is called for as to the baseline amount of zinc in a large sample of bouquets, to establish a statistical control as to what compositional proportions of copper and zinc constitute an appreciable deviation from normal variances of alloy as to be considered “brass”.

The reworking of the die before the striking of 687 is dramatic, with entirely renewed legends in coarser lettering, to the point that one questions whether it is indeed the same die, though the faint images of near-vanished blades of grass (particularly at the top of the bouquet, and double punched bouquet elements (particularly shamrocks) lead this cataloguer to incline toward substantial retouching. 3 Pcs.

The piece is of much later date than its undertype would suggest. The two or three others I’ve seen are also countermarked over cartwheel pennies. The name Paquette is not to be found in Montreal directories till about 1860. Lovell’s Montreal directory, for 1898-99, published by John Lovell & Son, has an entry for Paquette & Co. who advertise their “Crown Liquid Blue”, a laundry agent. As cartwheel pennies never had a great circulation in Canada, the company may have considered a promotion for its commencement in business by ordering up worn and discarded cartwheels, already one hundred years old. Lyman Low’s Comstock Sale, Part III, November 25, 1903, lot 539, offered a specimen with the comment: I judge this to be an early card. Another specimen appeared in his sale of July 21, 1904, where he added I recall only one specimen previously offered; no doubt this was the same piece offered a few months earlier. If only Low knew the Paquette countermark was a mere six years of age when he published that comment! (Marked Impressions).

richard cooper collecTion of canadian counTermarks ~ parT ivThis is the second-to-last offering of the largest collection ever formed of Canadian countermarks. The series is somewhat of a

bewildering one due to the many types of marks encountered. The most recognized group is, of course, those identified as having been issued by merchants for advertising purposes, and who as well supposed that the holders of such tokens would be redeeming them at their stores or offices. Another incentive for stamping coins in Canada was that the discredited coppers would be resurrected as legitimate coin due to the name stamp, which seemed to give them authority based on the merchant who issued them. This was as well the case of U.S. silver coins when they were overrated in Canada, and the canny merchants advantaged themselves by circulating discountedsilveratitsfullrate,whichwouldencouragetheirtradewhenredeemedinexchangeattheirstoreorplaceofbusiness.

Silversmiths and other tradesmen such as metal workers self-stamped their coppers; in the case of the silversmiths or jewellers they may represent test pieces. But these are only the obvious reasons, and one is left to wonder what, if anything, many of these countermarks actually represent. Nevertheless, someone took the time to either go to one of the stampers in order to have his name or message applied to a coin, or to punch it out himself. The possible reasons for this are multitudinous, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it is the very mystery and eventual acceptance that we may never know the reasons, if any, what the marks were created for in the first place. Certainly, many were whimsical, but several probably represent a tourist’s souvenir, who, when arriving home had a remembrance of the place he visited bearing the image of a bank building, a habitant, or St. George slaying the dragon.

This is a mark typical of those used by blacksmiths in England from the late 18th to the mid-19th century. As the two specimens here are both over Canadian undertypes, and the bouquet-sou type is a purely Canadian one, I checked the Montreal directories and was immediately rewarded by an entry in The Montreal directory for 1842-3 ..., compiled by Robert W.S. MacKay, which showed Lawrence Ray as a blacksmith at the corner of Common and King Street. He is not entered in an earlier directory, An alphabetical list of the merchants, traders, and housekeepers, residing in Montreal ..., compiled by Thomas Doige, 1819, nor can he be accounted for in the 1825 Montreal Census. This 1842 entry is the only one for him, so his dates must be post 1825, and end with this sole directory inclusion. The Ray name was a rare one in Montreal, even till the 1870s. Here is a case where the undertype provided evidence of the issuer. (Marked Impressions).

When this solitary specimen was examined, I concluded that the crude mark represented an individual with the odd name of A. Hiick. I showed the piece to Chris Faulkner, who, as happy coincidences would have it, has a similar one with a better strike, and the mark can clearly be seen to be A. Ritch(ie?). This may be the mark of Alexander Ritchie, a founder, located in Lovell’s Montreal Directory for 1868-69, published by John Lovell. (Marked Impressions).

According to Brunk’s American and Canadian countermarked coins, Part III, Robbins and Lawrence was founded in the 1830s as Kendall and Lawrence and manufactured guns. In 1844 Robbins joined the business, and it became Robbins, Kendall and Lawrence. Kendall left the company in 1846, at which time it became Robbins and Lawrence. In 1854 the company obtained a contract to produce a quarter million fire arms for the British, but it was cancelled just before manufacture, causing the firm to declare bankruptcy. The stamp is the mark used on the company’s 1841 rifles (Rulau, 1982). This piece sold for $300.00 in the Van Ormer sale. The company was located in Windsor, Vermont (cf. Brunk 34560). Robinson’s Carriage Works of Kingston was operated by George W. Robinson, born in 1851 according to the Federal Census of 1881, wherein he was referred to as F.W. Robinson. According to Russell Rulau in United States trade tokens 1866-1889, second ed., Iola, 1988, the business ran from 1881 to 1894 from 233-235 Princess Street, Kingston. According to Dr. Brunk in his soon to be published second edition, Robinson appears to have died around 1894. The mark is rarely seen over anything but Canada cents of 1884, though Brunk noted an example over a Canada cent of 1881, as well as an even more unusual specimen marked on a 1797 cartwheel penny. The 1859 cent catalogued above is another case of an atypical undertype. (Marked Impressions).

John F. Ross was a sewing machine attachment maker in Toronto on King St. E. in 1874. The following year he was listed as a tinsmith at 107 Cambridge, but by 1876 he had moved once more, this time to 526 Queen St. W., advertising stoves and house furnishings, in addition to his tinware. He remained at this address till about 1880, at which time he moved to 189 Bathurst. Later directories have not been checked, so I’m unable to say exactly when he registered as a company. His name no longer occurs in the Ontario gazetteer & directory for 1901-02, published by the Ontario Publishing and Advertising Co. According to the Federal Census of 1881 he was born in Ontario in 1845. (Marked Impressions).

The Rouleau countermarks have always been avidly collected, and I have described three forms of the stamp in Marked Impressions. The evidence seems to guide us towards Quebec City as their origin. The absence of the mark on Quebec pieces actually tends to support the argument for Quebec in my opinion, as defacements of the local coinage would likely have been a problem.

This mark is similar to the one illustrated by Langdon, and identified as that of George Savage, Sr. (1767-1845), progenitor of the Savage firms. As George Sr. had retired by 1836, the mark is most certainly not his, but is that of his son, Joseph, to whom the business was transferred in 1842. Another son, George, had earlier on, in 1829, been placed in charge of the store just opened in Toronto. The Savage firm mostly imported silver, or had other working silversmiths in the city manufacture special orders that may have been pressing. Presentation pieces and trophies from the Henry Birks Collection of Canadian silver by Ross Fox, Ottawa, 1985, clarifies the issue of the principals in the firm and the dates of their association. Several wonderful presentation pieces with the Savage and, more importantly, the Savage & Lyman hallmarks are reproduced in the book. (See figs. 43-46). (Marked Impressions).

These two, though duplicates, were obtained from different sources, indicating that the mark may have some legitimacy as an advertising piece. It’s interesting to note that the marks both occur on the reverse in almost the identical spot. One is rather worn, but the other is in near mint state. The U.S. Census of 1880 locates three individuals by the name of Fred. G. Shalling. The first was a machinist in Taunton, Massachusetts, born in 1828; the second was a liquor merchant of New York City, born in 1840; the third was an engraver in New Bedford, Massachusetts, born in 1854. The Sherbrooke File Works, under the management of J.M. Chapman & Co., was located on Bank St. according to the Eastern Townships directory for 1882 ... published by Normandeau & Co., Montreal, 1881. H. Leureux is not listed in any of the Sherbrooke directories checked, but a Pierre L’heureux, a joiner, was located in Lovell’s Canadian Dominion directory for 1871, published by John Lovell, as well as the above noted Eastern Townships directory. However, the Federal Census of 1881 records Henry L’Heureux of Sherbrooke, a carpenter, son of Pierre, born in 1857. Several other L’Heureux are listed in Canada’s manufacturers, business and professional record and gazetteer ..., published by the Trade Publishing Co., Toronto, 1908, however no H. L’Heureux. This somewhat elaborate tinsmith mark of James Sinclair represents an individual apparently well known in the trade. He was born in 1845 in Scotland, according to the Federal census of 1881, and must have arrived early on in Canada, for he was already apprenticed to James & John Buchanan prior to 1862, as he is already listed in the County of Oxford gazetteer and directory for 1862-3, compiled and published by James Sutherland, Ingersoll, 1862. He is entered in the Union Publishing Co.’s Ingersoll directory 1894-95, ..., Ingersoll, n.d., and was still practicing the trade as late as 1895 in Ingersoll. He lived to a good age, dying in 1930 at about the age of 85. (Marked Impressions).

David Smillie, Jr. [1804-65] was from an important family of enterprising engravers, skilled in the allied arts. He took as his trade that of working jeweller - really a silversmith. He was located variously at Quebec, New York and then Montreal, where the David Smillie marks were likely issued.

This appears to be the merchant that first was a tobacconist around 1875, then by 1884, a dealer and repairer of sewing machines. A U.S. and Canada patent indicates that Irenée N. Soly was truly an inventor and perhaps more of his inventions will come to light in the future. The patent was held under the names of I.N. Soly and S. Soly (probably his wife), and was for a Station Indicator for Railway Cars. The patent was granted in the U.S. on September 8, 1891 and its application in Canada was made on May 29, 1890. In Masonic chapter pennies: The Albert M. Hanauer Collection, edited and compiled by E. A. King, Pittsburgh, 1926, one of these countermarks is described (no. 14003) over an 1854 New Brunswick penny. He gives as a short history that This Chapter was originally Chartered by the Supreme Grand Chapter of Scotland, Dec. 26th, 1832 under the number 55. United in the formation of the Grand Chapter of Nova Scotia, October 14th, 1869. J. Ross Robertson’s history of the lodge is of great interest and gives it more antiquity than the entry presented in King’s book. In The History of Freemasonry in Canada ..., volume one, Toronto, 1900, he states: Between 1757 and 1791 there were three lodges in this province, viz.: “St. Andrew’s Lodge, No. 4, in Halifax, N.S.,” warranted 26th March 1768 as No. 155. It was No. 188 in 1814, No. 137 in 1832, and No. 118 in 1863. This lodge met “at the sign of the General Amherst” in this year (1768). It was granted a centenary warrant second lodge, said to be known as “General Amherst’s Lodge,” No. 156, was warranted in 1768, but there are no records after that year. It is numbered in the Ahiman Rezon of 1804 and 1807 the same as in 1768. (Marked Impressions).

This is an example of a merchant advertising a trade which appears to be a secondary one. The County of Oxford gazetteer and directory for 1862-3, compiled and published by James Sutherland, Lovell’s Canadian Dominion directory for 1871, published by John Lovell, and Fisher & Taylor’s gazetteer and general directory of the County of Oxford, 1874-5, published by Fisher and Taylor, list Alfred J. Stevens in Norwich as a cabinet maker. The latter directory gives his address as being on Stover Street. The Ontario gazetteer and directory for 1901/02 lists him as proprietor of a general store in Salford. John J. Veldon, the marker of this coin, was a pharmacist in Quebec City. He was the son of James Veldon, also a pharmacist, who was born in Ireland in 1821 according to the Federal Census of 1881. The census of 1851, however, assigned the senior Veldon’s birthdate as being 1818. This would make more sense for, as Rulau states, based on information from Byron Johnson, James was married on June 13, 1837. John J. Veldon himself was born in Quebec in 1845. According to the Quebec Mercury of October 11, 1864, reporting on the meeting of the College of Physicians and Surgeons for Lower Canada, John J. Veldon was admitted to practice as a chemist, druggist and apothecary on that day. He is listed in directories in St. Roch, a borough of Quebec, from 1868 to 1897 on St. Joseph Street. John J. Veldon was well acquainted with the products of Devins & Bolton as evidenced by an ad prepared for the Montreal firm’s celebrated worm pastilles which appeared in the Courrier du Canada. Herein J.J. Veldon’s was one of the establishments endorsing the product. In another late 19th century prospectus for one of the quack companies called “Quickcure”, a toothache remedy, J.J. Veldon is one of several Quebec druggists giving an affirmative testimonial to the product: My customers always come again for ‛uickcure’, as nothing else stops pain so quickly. This mark was attributed to Walter C. Pratt, of Brockton, Massachusetts about thirty years ago. A Walter Pratt was agent for a carpenter’s union at the turn of the century, and a W. The mark does not precisely correspond with the known hallmark issued by the firm of William S. Walker, but it has been assumed by Brunk to represent this well-known Montreal firm of jewellers, and I fully agree with his attribution.

William John Wallace was a machinist, according to Bradstreet’s reports of the Dominion of Canada for 1878, published by The Bradstreet Co., N.Y. The Federal Census of 1891 listed him as a machinery manufacturer who was born in Ontario in 1841, and the Port Hope Weekly Guide issue of August 31, 1894, contains his obituary, his death date given as August 24th. Likely the mark of John Wanless, Toronto jeweller, silversmith, and medal manufacturer, 1865-1905. According to the Federal Census of 1871, John Wanless was born in Scotland in 1830.

The mark tallies with the one shown by Langdon for this Toronto jeweller and medallist. Many of his small medallions were produced around the turn of the century and appear not infrequently in the marketplace. Sports and fraternal medals are the most typical types produced by this maker. John Wanless (1830-1905) originally went into partnership with William Bell for ten years, from 1851-1861. He continued on his own from that date till 1890 when his son joined him. The firm was still producing medallions as late as 1921. [See Robert C. Brunk lists this, as well as two other related marks of the Chicago, Illinois jeweller, Charles Wendel. Perhaps the firm also catered to a small Canadian clientele as indicated by these two specimens, or else they are further examples of the general acceptance of either American or Canadian coins in both countries. This is apparently a name of Swiss origin. An 18 page typescript genealogical record of the Wettstein family of Weiningen-Pfyn, Kt. Thurgau, Switzerland, abt. 1595-1907, was produced in 1907 by Julius Billeter. The Wettstein name is an uncommon one in Canada and no H. Wettsteins were found. The mark is included due to its being found on Canadian silver coins as well as American ones…. (Marked Impressions).

A.S. Whiting was, in 1857, president of the Oshawa Manufacturing Co., founders and agricultural implement makers. Earlier, in 1852, he was associated with one Arkland as wholesale agents of American scythes, hoes, forks, &c. Whiting’s factory seems to have preceded the famous Joseph Hall Works (see Ler. 1210). According to Greg Brunk: This firm was organized by A.S. Whiting and E.C. Tuttle in Cedar Dale. In 1858 A.S. Whiting and Co. became Oshawa’s first major industry. (Unpub. 2nd ed.). The vicissitudes of Dr. Wilkins’ life have been well documented by Q. David Bowers in his book titled The strange career of Dr. Wilkins, Wolfeboro, 1987. The piece in the collection is of the Type I, large letters mark, which according to Bowers is the commoner of the two. Many Canadian pieces were marked by the doctor, almost all of which are of the Type I variety. As the northern boundary of New Hampshire borders on the Province of Quebec, many Canadian pieces would have been available for Dr. Wilkins’ stamp. (Marked Impressions).

The coin must have been engraved after 1880 when his address became 31 King East. According to Early painters and engravers in Canada by J. Russell Harper, Toronto, 1972, he was in partnership with William White in Toronto in 1884. According to the Federal Census of 1871, Wilson was born in Scotland in 1845. (Marked Impressions).

This is a Canadian mark, and demonstrates both early and late markings. This last proves the circulation of British coins in Canada well after the decimal system was established. My mother recalled that British pennies were commonplace in the 20s and 30s and were accepted at two cents. A.W. Woodard is no doubt the individual listed in Lovell’s Montreal directory for 1906-07, published by John Lovell & Son, as manager of James Alexander & Co. Ltd., exporters and dealers in butter and cheese. Whether these pieces represented the business of which he was manager, or whether they were personal pieces is something that will likely never be determined. It seems possible that as late as 1906 stray oddments in circulation may have caught the fancy of individuals such as Woodard and were marked as souvenirs of a time past. This may be the same as the Albert W. Woodard recorded by the Federal Census of 1881 as having been born in the Province of Quebec in 1871. (Marked Impressions).

Auction Conduct: All our starting bids will be opened at approximately 10% above the second highest mail or computer bid. If there are no mail bids, auctioneer will start the bids at the reserve price, or half of the low estimate, or where possible, call for an opening bid. Advances are at the discretion of the auctioneer. In the event there are identical bids, earliest bid and floor bids will take priority. We reserve the right to withdraw any lot prior to the sale. Lots are sold to the highest bidder at an average rate of 150 lots per hour.

Bidding Procedures: Bids may be made in advance of the auction, by phone, person, fax 506-634-1026, email [email protected] or mail. Live telephone bids are accepted through an approved agent provided by Geoffrey Bell Auctions at 506-333-7778. ALL Mail, fax and email bids must arrive to our office no later than July 20th, 2016 at 12 noon EDT. The auction will be conducted on iCollector.com and all mail bids will be entered online. Geoffrey Bell Auctions reserves the right to refuse bids deemed not in good faith. We are not responsible for bidder errors so please check your bids carefully. Bidding increments are at the discretion of the auctioneer, the scale below must be followed, any uneven bids may not be accepted:

Grading Standards and Description: The Cataloguers have taken every reasonable measure to ensure that all the lots are as described by Geoffrey Bell Auctions. Many of the lots are third party graded by PCGS, BCS, PMG, ICCS, NGC, CCCS - We feel these are the most recognized grading companies in the industry.

Return Policies: Returns will be accepted by absentee bidders for lots that have been misattributed or incorrectly cata-logued. We guarantee that all items are genuine and we will refund anything that has been misrepresented by the catalogu-ers. Certified grading concerns are to be dealt with through the certified grading company, not Geoffrey Bell Auctions. No returns will be accepted on graded material. All floor sales are final, including those who choose to use our agent. Absolutely no returns will be accepted after 45 days as consignors are then paid in full.

Lot pick-up: Saturday, July 23rd from 10-5pm & Sunday, July 24th from 10-1pm, 2016, on the RCNA bourse floor. All lots not picked up during the show will be shipped at the bidder’s expense. We charge actual shipping costs plus $5 per package for packing and processing the order. Insurance is $5 per thousand.

Payment Details: Cheques must clear before shipping; money orders and certified cheques will be verified and shipped within 48 hours of receipt. Credit Card and Paypal payments are accepted at a 3.0% premium to cover fees.
