    SCOPE

1.1 This Engineering Guide covers preferred methods for grounding equipment and structures.

1.2 Applicable grounding system shown in Figures 1 through 22 should be used and specified on drawings andsketches. Grounding requirements are covered in IP 16-4-1.

    INSTALLATION

2.1 Ground rods are to be located and installed as follows:

    a. The horizontal distance from the point where a ground wire goes underground to a ground rodconnection is not greater than 5 ft. In addition, the horizontal distance between ground rods is 10 ftminimum.

    b. Ground rods are installed before attaching connector and wire.

    c. Ground rods are driven in undisturbed soil to their full length.

    d. Installations are backfilled only after Owner's Inspector has approved the installation.

2.2 Conduit assemblies, clamps, connectors and wire or cable connections to these items shall all be wrenchtight.

2.3 After installation, all ground wire connections shall be completely covered with protective coating, describedherein under MATERIALS." Connectors and cable shall be free of dirt and dry before coating is applied.

    MATERIALS

3.1 Grounding conductors: stranded copper bare or insulated with a minimum of 600v, PVC, NEC Type THWInsulation. Minimum sizes for underground and aboveground conductors shall be #2/0 Awg for main groundwires and #2 Awg for all branch grounding connections to equipment.

3.2 Ground rods: 3/4 in. diameter by 10 ft long, copperweld", Hubbard Co. #9450 or equal.

3.3 Clamps for ground rod: pure wrought copper, compression connectors, equal to Burndy Company's TypeYGL" in sizes as shown in Table 1, below, or welded per Figures 14 and 15 on page 17.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:(1) All surfaces that are to be welded must be bright, clean & dry.(2) Place mould over clean surface with end of conductor under center of tap hole.(3) Cover tap hole with metal disk and empty powder into crucible so that starting powder is at the top of the

crucible. Do not attempt to mix or stir powder.(4) Use flint gun to ignite starting powder.(5) After approximately 10 seconds remove mold and clean slag from crucible before making next weld.(6) Make sure that mold is dry, preheat with torch if required.
