Purposes of today's talk:

1.Encourage everyone (who hasn't already) to sign up for a Library FYS Instruction Session




– Encourage everyone to consider follow-up sessions (as appropriate)





– Talk a little about new models for Information Literacy, as it relates to the Gen Ed Curriculum at Drake





– Talk a little about new models for Information Literacy, as they relate to the Gen Ed Curriculum at Drake

– List and briefly demonstrate some new resources and facilities available from the Library

1. Introductory Library Session: Why You (and your students)

should do itWhy you should schedule a Library session for your FYS: 1.Will help your students build research skills– Increased awareness of many resources and tools

available – Will help us (the Library faculty) to better serve

your classes in the future– We are willing to be flexible!– Your class doesn't need to be "research oriented" to

2. Multiple Sessions: Why you should consider it

You may also want to schedule multiple Library sessions for your FYS (or any other class you teach!): 1."Followup" session would deepen students'

exposure to Info Lit principles and skills– Willing to tailor (length, location, approach) to your

schedule and needs– Would allow in-depth coverage of individual

resources (such as those I'll highlight later in the talk)

Technological Literacy, Computer Literacy, "Information Technology," tech training, eportfolios, "library training," etc.


So, what is it?

• Information Literacy is a Synthetic discipline, based around a unique Perspective: o That the "information rich, knowledge poor"

world we live in must always be approached critically

o That there are certain ethical questions that are inherent in the adoption of new technologies

o That certain technological skills and dispositions are necessary, but not sufficient, to achieving "literacy"

• Information Literacy is a Synthetic discipline, based around a unique Perspective: o That Information Literacy is a "gateway literacy"

that opens the door to discussion of "emerging literacies" (a.k.a "trans-literacies") ranging from: Economic and financial literacy Visual literacy Media literacy Multicultural literacy

Information Literacy - New ModelsDiscussion of Library Faculty and others who teach Info Lit: 1.Recognize the problems with the term

"Information Literacy"– Recognize the problems with re-naming, or

embracing one of the "trendy" alternatives ("Information Fluency")

– Still, the need for a "uniquely Drake approach" was felt

• One aimed at Gen Ed, • the other at upper-level (discipline-based)

and graduate education– Gen Ed approach referred to as: "Digital and

Media Literacy"

What is Digital and Media Literacy in the Drake context? 1.Flexible approach: Either course-based, or

session-based, or anywhere in between– Focus: Skills and dispositions students need to

excel in their general education coursework, as well as prepare for their upper-level coursework

– Collaborative: Designed to work with faculty at all levels, either other Gen Ed instructors, or address the needs of the disciplines


What is Media Literacy in the Drake context? • Recognizes that students get their news/information

from "non-traditional" sources:o Film

o Podcastso "Social" media: Facebook /Twitter / RSS feeds


What is Media Literacy in the Drake context? • Such sources raise serious (and interesting) issues:

o No, or little, "vetting" of stories / pieceso When "everyone" is a reporter, ethical issues
