Under the building code NCC, a Deemed to Satisfy (DTS) solution is one that satisfies the performance requirements set out in section C of volume one. Section C specifically deals with the fire protection of openings in fire barriers (i.e. service penetrations in fire rated walls and floors).
Section C3.15 – Openings for Service Installations
Where any service penetrates an internal fire barrier that has a set Fire Resistance Level (FRL) with respect to integrity and insulation, the installation must comply with the following:
a) A Fire Tested System – An identical prototype, installed in the same wall or floor system that has beentested/approved to the fire testing standard AS1530.4 and AS4072.1 which has achieved an FRL of equal to orgreater than that required by the fire barrier.
For example, if the site has a -/90/90 plasterboard wall system with an electrical cable penetration, the product used to seal the cables must have been fire tested at an approved laboratory WITH electrical cables IN the same wall type AND fire tested for at least 90 minutes without failing the integrity or insulation criteria.

Fire Assessment Reports
Fire testing is a timely and expensive process, and it is
impossible to test every single possible service configuration
‘identically’ in a practical sense.
Under the building code C3.15(a)(i)(B) a testing authority is
permitted to write a formal assessment confirming the fire
performance (FRL) of the penetration. The guidelines for
what can and can’t be included in a formal assessment are
outlined in AS4072.1.
Our FyreFLEX fire assessment report FCO 1579 is written by
expert Fire Engineers from a NATA approved laboratory
which provides evidence of compliance under the NCC. The
report summaries the decades of fire test data for FyreFLEX
Sealant, and allows for a large range of practical
applications. Trafalgar products installed in a plasterboard wall, being fire tested at the CSIRO
Approvals update Trafalgar are proud to announce that our latest update of report FCO 1579 for FyreFLEX Sealant will now include greater cable and metal pipe penetration coverage in Hebel and SPEEDPANEL walls, as well as our new TWrap insulation wrap systems.
TWrap is a 25mm thick foil blanket that can be used to wrap around service penetrations to insulate the penetration for up to 3 hours (-/180/180) and replaces the FyreWRAP 450mm insulation system. See page 22 for more information.

FYREFLEX AND INSULATION PERFORMANCE:
FyreFLEX sealant can achieve an FRL up to -/240/120 on small bundles of cables in
certain fire barriers, however larger cables and metallic pipes will reduce the
insulation rating (i.e. increase in heat rise) under fire conditions. When this occurs,
TWrap is required to be wrapped around the services for a certain length to achieve
better insulation performance. For more information, refer to page 22 of this
document or call the Trafalgar Technical team on 1800 888 714.

FyreFLEX Sealant is a water based, low VOC and environmentally friendly fire-rated sealant with
intumescent properties which makes it perfect for fire stopping cable and metal pipe penetrations through
fire rated barriers.
FyreFLEX is the one of the most fire tested sealants in the market with more than 30 fire and acoustic
tests, and assessments spanning over 30 years. FyreFLEX has been approved for use in a large range of
control joint or firestopping applications required under the National Construction Code (NCC).

SEALANT APPLICATION: Install FyreFLEX in accordance to installation details provided in the tables on pages 7 to 13 for the service and fire barrier specific approved systems.
1. Surfaces to be sealed must be clean, dry and free from dust, dirt, grease and other contamination.
2. Cut both the cartridge tip and applicator nozzle to the required diameter and angle, screw nozzle onto
cartridge.
3. To achieve a clean finish, apply masking tape either side of the penetration to prevent sealant exuding onto
unwanted areas.
4. Apply sealant with applicator gun ensuring good surface contact is achieved by forcing sealant into the
opening to be sealed. Ensure that the correct depth of sealant is applied as required for the specific
installation - refer to tables on pages 6 to 21. Backing rod can be used to achieve the correct depth if required
(PE or other material).
5. Finish with a fillet or ‘cove’ of FyreFLEX sealant to the perimeter of the service – refer to tables below for
appropriate fillet sizes per penetration.
6. If necessary, tool within 5 minutes of application using a spatula dipped in soapy water, applying sufficient
pressure to ensure good contact of the sealant against the joint surfaces.
7. Remove masking tape. After use wash any tools in warm water and wash hands after use.
NOTE: TWrap may can be used to achieve higher insulation values – refer to pages 22-23 or contact Trafalgar for further information.

General installation notes
1. Separation distances between FyreFLEX penetrationsCable and pipe penetrations that have been sealed with FyreFLEX sealant can be installed as close as 50mm apart, as measured from the edge of each aperture as shown (approved via assessment, reference FCO 1579c).
2. Measuring annular gaps and fill depths
This product manual refers to annular gaps as the space between the edge of the penetration and the closest edge of the service. It can be calculated simply as follows:

Filling FyreFLEX Sealant to the right depth is important to maintain performance of the system, and miminise overuse of material. Trafalgar recommends the use of foam backing rod (combustible or otherwise) to set the right depth of sealant.

TWRAP INSTALLATION FOR INCREASED INSULATION PERFORMANCE
TWrap is a 25mm fully encapsulated wrap that can be applied to service penetration treated with FyreFLEX
sealant to increase the insulation performance which reduces the temperature rise on the service during fire
conditions.
For example, if a 150mm steel pipe was sealed in a concrete floor that requires 2-hour FRL, the addition of
TWrap will increase the FRL from -/120/- to -/120/120 when wrapped for 600mm off the slab.
TWrap must be installed on both sides of a wall penetration and is tested on the top side only for floor
penetrations and is fixed around services simply with 4.6mm wide steel cable ties or straps 50mm from each
end, and then at 150mm centres between.
FyreWrap 38mm may be substituted for TWrap when installed at the correct lengths specified in the above
service specific tables.

1. Cable TraysBefore wrapping, cable trays require loose TWrap infill material to be packed around the cables and into any voids between the cable tray and the services as shown below. Note this is NOT required for wrapping individual bundles of cables.
2. Cable bundles
Some smaller bundles of cables won’t need any TWrap at all – look for the Wrap Free notes in the tables above.
The ones that do need TWrap can be simply wrapped with TWrap for the correct length and strapped in place with 4.6mm cable ties 50mm from each end, and at 150mm centres between them.
