MAGICALMUSICALChitty Chitty Bang Bang is coming to Sydney, and you shouldn’t miss out!

adapted the screenplay with proli! c children’s author Roald Dahl, led the British ! lm crew.

The Sherman brothers, fresh from major success with the Disney Studios, provided the score and songs, earning an Oscar nomination in the process.

The late 1960s ! lm was about a hapless inventor (Van Dyke) ! nally ! nding success with a " ying car, before a dictator from a foreign government sets out to take for himself.

The ! lm was a box of! ce hit and will be one that will be watched for many future generations to come, just like other musical classics of that era such as ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘Grease’.

The ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ stage production opened at the London Palladium to rave reviews back in April 2002.

The London production was nominated for three Laurence Olivier Awards in 2003, including Best New Musical. It won Best Musical at the Variety Club Awards in 2003.

‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ broke every box of! ce record and continues as the longest running musical ever to play at the London Palladium, beating ‘Oliver!’ and ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.’ During its three and a half year run, the family musical exceeded £70 million in box of! ce revenue.

The ‘Chitty’ stage car holds the Guinness World Record for being the most expensive prop in the history of British Theatre.

The fantastic adventures of this out-of-the-ordinary car that " ies through the air and sails the seas, will reach a new generation of fans through this enthralling and enchanting stage musical.

‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ premieres at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney on Friday, November 16. Tickets start at $69.60 and are on sale now.

To book or for more information call Ticketmaster on 1300 723 038 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.au.

adaptation of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, which features sensational sets, stunning special effects, an irresistible story and memorable classic numbers such as ‘Truly Scrumptious’, ‘Toot Sweets’, ‘Hushabye Mountain’ and, of course, its Oscar nominated song ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’. All these ingredients add up to a West End and Broadway blockbuster the whole family will love.

Based on the timeless novel by Ian Fleming, author and creator of the ‘James Bond’ franchise, the production features music and lyrics by the legendary Sherman brothers, composers of ‘Mary Poppins’, with original script and fresh adaptation directed by Ray Roderick.

Originally written by Ian Fleming for his son, the much-loved 1968 ! lm ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ staring Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes was part of everyone’s childhood.

The movie began life as a personal dream of ‘James Bond’ producer, Albert R. ‘Cubby’ Broccoli. As with many of his ! lm projects, ‘Cubby’ Broccoli surrounded himself with the very best British talent available to ensure the success of ‘Chitty’, which at the time was publicised as the largest and most expensive musical ever ! lmed in England.

Verne said he and the whole cast were very distraught when the Australian actor tragically died during production.

“Heath’s death was tough for everyone involved,” he said.

“After it happened trying to go back and ! nish the movie, for me, was probably one of the most dif! cult things I’ve done.

“Fortunately we were lucky enough to get Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law in to help ! nish Heath’s scenes off. The money that those three actors made from the movie was donated to Matilda (Heath’s daughter).

“I’m glad that we did ! nish off the ! lm and it ended up being a great experience. I feel honoured to have had the privilege to meet him.”

During periods when Verne wasn’t starring in movies he made a living out of the crazy world that is reality television.

Verne’s reality TV career saw him take part in such shows as ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ and a show that saw fading celebrities live their day-to-day lives in a Los Angeles mansion called ‘The Surreal Life’.

Verne said he turned to reality TV in a desperate bid to make a quick buck when he was short of ! lm work.

“I didn’t necessarily enjoy the reality TV I did but it was basically feast or fathom – if you’re not working you kind of have to do other things to get by and that can happen to anybody who’s in the entertainment industry,” he said.

Verne admitted there was a fun element to reality television but also a part where he wished cameras were not around 24/7.

“When I did ‘The Surreal Life’ that’s de! nitely how I felt,” he said.

“That show was a low moment in my life. Unfortunately that (show) happened but I’ve moved on and things are different now.”

You can meet Verne Troyer and a galaxy of other stars at the 10th Anniversary Supanova Pop Culture Expo at Sydney Olympic Park on the weekend of June 16-17.

To book or for more information visit www.supanova.com.au.

V erne Troyer may be small in stature (81cm to be exact) but that hasn’t stopped him

from appearing in some of the biggest movies and television shows of the past decade.

While many of us ! rst met Verne as the villainous sidekick to Dr Evil in the ‘Austin Powers’ movies, the man himself actually got his start in the entertainment industry way back in the mid-90s as a stunt double for a nine-month old baby in the John Hughes classic ‘Baby’s Day Out.’

Verne said he thought becoming a stuntman would be the perfect path for him to enter the ! lm industry.

“I always thought I could be in the (movie) business, I was very active when I was younger, but I just didn’t know how to get started, so I thought stunt work would be the best way,” he said.

Throughout his stuntman career, Verne took part in some pretty out there roles often playing animals or small children. The 43-year-old recalls one of the more frightening moments of his stuntman career on the set of 1994’s ‘Baby’s Day Out’.

“Basically I had to crawl out onto a platform from a ledge of a building and if I missed timed it I would go straight over,” he said.

“There was an airbag below but it wasn’t positioned perfectly. I would probably say that’s the most dangerous thing to happen.”

It wasn’t until 1999 when Verne could ! nally give up his stuntman career when he was cast as Mini-Me in one of the most successful comedies of all time – ‘Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.’

“I got the role as a Mini-Me through a friend named Rick Baker, who’s won

multiple Oscars over time for his special effects work,” Verne said.

“Basically it was through my connection with Rick that the producers of ‘Austin Powers’ contacted me to go and audition for the role and I must say that I was very lucky.”

In ‘Austin Powers 2’ and in the third movie ‘Austin Powers in Goldmember’, Verne played Mini-Me, Dr Evil’s (Mike Myers) smaller and more concentrated evil protégé.

Verne said being involved in a big time movie franchise like ‘Austin Powers’ and working alongside a comic genius like Mike Myers ! nally got him noticed on the acting scene.

“If I wasn’t for ‘Austin Powers’ I probably wouldn’t be in the position I am in,” he said.

“Every time I’m working with Mike Myers I’m working with a genius, he makes making movies fun. Mike plays music in-between takes and dances around. He always improvises, so you’ve got to be prepared for that but all-in-all he makes it exciting.”

After starring in such an iconic role, most people refer to Verne as Mini-Me, which he says can be challenging especially when auditioning for other roles.

“Getting typecast to a particular role happens with most actors,” he said.

“If you look at my acting credits I’ve kind of stayed away from the leprechaun or the elf roles because I want to show people that I can do bigger and better things and that we (little people) are not always going to be your elf.”

Following on from ‘Austin Powers’, Verne had a small role in the ! rst ‘Harry Potter’ ! lm then in the 2009 Heath Ledger ! lm ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.’

CARL’SBACKTop comedian Carl Barron can’t get enough of Penrith Panthers

Carl’s ! rst four shows earlier this year at Panthers sold out very quickly, therefore a ! fth show had to be added to the calendar to keep up with Carl’s ever growing popularity.

“It’s a funny thing because I’d be lying if I said that I was totally surprised that my shows sell-out because it’s been really good for a while now, I guess I’ll never get 100 per cent used to it,” Carl said.

Catch Carl Barron on his ‘One Ended Stick Tour’ at Penrith Panthers tonight Friday, June 1 at 8pm. Tickets are $46.50.

To book or for more information call 1800 061 991 or visit www.penrith.panthers.com.au.

I t seems legendary Aussie comedian Carl Barron can’t stay away from Penrith Panthers, but we can assure you this will

be his ! fth and ! nal local outing of this tour – so make sure you don’t miss it.

Carl Barron started his stand-up career back in 1993 but shot to fame in 1997 with his ! rst ever television appearance on ‘The NRL Footy Show’. Carl said before that memorable appearance he never really had the desire to be on television.

“From ‘93 to ‘97, I was doing my trade on the Sydney pub circuit and just didn’t think I was good enough for TV,” he said.

“I was interested in making people laugh but I never had a burning passion to be famous or anything like that and I still don’t.”

CHATTER ON THE BOX With Nathan Taylor

W ell it was very big week of television both here and overseas, here’s what you may have missed…

There was big news out of Summer Bay last week with long-running ‘Home and Away’ cast member and fan favourite Lyn Collingwood, who plays ‘busy-body’ Colleen Smart, leaving the show. Her departure from the Bay came as a surprise to many fans who thought Colleen was part of the furniture and would never leave. But the 75-year-old veteran actress thought her time on the show was up, preferring to concentrate on her theatre work. We’ll miss you Mrs Smart.

With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee approaching, Channel Nine will screen a special concert in honour of our great monarch. The ‘Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert’ will feature an all-star line-up including Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, Tom Jones, Gary Barlow, Jessie J, Ed Sheeran, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Madness, JLS, and Annie Lennox. It screens at 8pm on Tuesday, June 6.

Channel Nine’s ‘The Voice’ is continuing to be a ratings juggernaut – last Monday’s episode saw 1.9 million Australians tune in. This is now the second week in a row that the show has gone a touch under two million viewers but

I wouldn’t think this minor dip would worry Channel Nine in the slightest.

Still on ‘The Voice’ have you noticed that all of the show’s best looking contestants are getting through each week? And here’s all us thinking the show is about the ‘voice’.

Channel Nine have backed former Olympian Grant Hackett, despite photos published over the weekend of his rather unkind treatment of his luxury Melbourne penthouse. While two of Hackett’s charities have dumped his services, the London Olympic broadcaster is still keen for him to front their coverage in July… interesting.

There are some great shows on the free-to-air digital channels these days and one in particular that caught my eye was ‘South Beach Tow’ (pictured) on 7Mate. The show follows the day-to-day actions of Tremont Towing, a well-established towing company in the South Beach area of Miami. Tremont is usually shown being involved in traf! c and ! nancial repossessions. Trust me on this – catch ‘South Beach Tow’, Mondays at 11pm on 7Mate.

For the few fans of Channel 10’s remake of ‘Young Talent Time’, the variety show is about to head out onto the road this month for a series of live shows. The entire ‘Young Talent Time’ cast will be performing live at the EVAN Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Wednesday, July 4. This may be the only chance you’ll see the ‘Young Talent Time’ cast do their thing due to terrible ratings, which saw the show move timeslots several times – it wont be back for season two.

It’s sad news for watchers of medical observational series ‘RPA’ with Channel Nine announcing that the new season, which began airing this week, will be its last. Set at Sydney’s Prince Alfred Hospital, the series has been running since 1995 and has always been a ratings success for the network. Tune in Wednesday nights at 9.30pm.

To ! nish up, Sweden were the victors in this year’s ‘Eurovision Song Contest’, which was shown on SBS last weekend. Sweden won with 372 points, followed by Russia with 259 and Serbia with 214. The United Kingdom had another disappointing year, coming in second last place.

Here are some helpful hints to assist in getting the most out of your coffee every day:- Start with fresh-roasted coffee. The ideal time for drinking

coffee is 7-14 days from roasting.

- Grind your coffee beans as you need them. You will get the most ! avour out of your coffee this way.

- Store your coffee beans in the resealable pack with the one-way valve, not in an airtight container. After roasting coffee beans, they give off CO2 gas. Storing your coffee in the resealable pack with the one-way valve lets this gas escape and keeps air from getting in and spoiling your beans.

- Store your coffee in a cool dark place (do not refrigerate or your coffee!!!) You can freeze coffee in an airtight container but you will not get the same ! avour as fresh coffee.

- Buy smaller quantities of coffee regularly rather than in bulk. Mighty Fine Coffee offer an AUTOBUY service. So if you know you drink 250 grams of coffee a fortnight, Mighty Fine Coffee will send you 250 grams of coffee a fortnight, to ensure you never run out of coffee. Just select the “AUTOBUY” option on the last page of the checkout.

- Use good-quality water. Water is the other large part of your brew, so it makes sense that it will affect the taste. If your tap water is not of a good standard, you may consider using " ltered or bottled water.

- Clean the water tank. This is as much for hygiene purposes as it is a coffee thing. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and clean the machine weekly. Mineral and oil build-up can turn your coffee bitter. Use descaler solution for best results. Enjoy!

A new romantic comedy/drama ! lm featuring a big ensemble cast of some of Hollywood’s elite hits the

big screen this week.Based on the book of the same name,

‘What To Expect When You’re Expecting’ follows the lives of ! ve Atlanta couples who suffer the many joys of the childbirth process.

Baby-crazy author Wendy gets a taste of her own militant mommy advice when pregnancy hormones ravage her body. Meanwhile Wendy’s husband, Gary, struggles not to be outdone by his competitive alpha-Dad, who’s expecting twins with his much younger trophy wife, Skyler. Photographer Holly is prepared to travel the globe to adopt a child, but her husband Alex isn’t so sure, and tries to quiet his panic by attending a ‘dudes’ support group. And rival food truck chefs

Rosie and Marco’s surprise hook-up results in an unexpected quandary: what to do when your ! rst child comes before your ! rst date?

T he popular fourth installment of the ‘Underworld’ franchise, ‘Underworld: Awakening’, makes its way to DVD

shelves this week.Kate Beckinsale, star of the ! rst

two ! lms, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to ! nd herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans.

‘Underworld: Awakening’ did fairly good numbers at the international box of! ce when it was released earlier this year, pulling in US$160 million, the highest ever taking of all ! lms in the ‘Underworld’ franchise.

However, the reception the movie received from critics and movie-goers was generally negative.

One critic from movie review website The Filtered Lens said: “If you try and pay attention to the plot you will get a headache”.

Fortunately there was one critic from Variety who was in favour saying: “Once again, Beckinsale brings an impressive physicality and subzero cool to her portrayal

of Selene”.I recommend fans of the ‘Underworld’

franchise decide for themselves on this one.

T he Beach Boys are an American institution.

Forming just on 50 years ago, the California-based group changed the music scene by bringing the cool California surf culture to radios all over the world.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the famous Beach Boys, the founding members have put together a brand new studio album titled ‘That’s Why God Made The Radio’.

Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks recently completed their recording sessions at Los Angeles’ Ocean Way Studios for the band’s 29th studio album, the ! rst in decades to feature all of the band’s surviving original members.

Produced by Brian Wilson and executive producer Mike Love, the album’s 11 new songs illustrate The Beach Boys’ unique and evocative West Coast story with the band’s timeless signature sound.

This album, released on Friday, will be the ! rst new material in more than two decades.

One track, titled with the same name of the album, is ! lled with classic Beach Boys harmonies and one of their best songs ever, according to member Brian Wilson.

It will be very interesting to see how this record does on the charts and if lovers of The Beach Boys’ older material can relate to the newer tracks.
