n LOOKING A BIT MORE TIDY IN FY5
A dozen new litter bins have been installed to make Thornton cleaner, as a result of Thornton Action Group working with Wyre Council.
Seen above in the photo: from left to right: Audrey Bond, Thornton Action Group, Councillor Peter Murphy, Irene Horner, Thornton Action Group, Phil Gooden from Wyre Council’s Street Scene team and Sally Richardson, community engagement officer for Wyre Council.
Following a request for the bins, the council has worked closely with Thornton Action Group and the community to determine where they were most needed.
Twelve are now in situ and are already making a difference.
Phil Jenkins of Thornton Community Action Group said: “We’re the eyes and ears on the ground and we see what needs doing. The co-operation between the Thornton Action Group and Wyre Council is an
opportunity to get things done. It’s a two way thing and not just about the frivolous stuff. I think it’s wonderful.”
Councillor Peter Murphy, Cabinet member with responsibility for waste, added: “This is a fantastic example of how we want to work with our communities. Local people know what is needed in their area and if we are able to facilitate this then we all gain. Hopefully this type of initiative is something that we can roll out across the borough. Well done to all concerned.”

At the family home in Melbourne Avenue, Anchorsholme, Lucas talked over his plans with Dad Ian and Mum Sarah and their popular neighbourhood pub, the Golden Eagle on Warren Drive, became the focus of a fund raising campaign. It soon had the backing of landlord Kevin Craugwell and the regulars who are no strangers to charity efforts.
Ian Fletcher explained: “The whole thing just snowballed and we got fantastic support from everyone.”
Local personalities like football legend Jimmy Armfield and Blackpool-based actress Alice Barry from the TV show Shameless lent their support and the result was a mammoth family fun day at the Golden Eagle. (in June pictured below.)
Entertainment is a feature at the Golden Eagle and live bands played on the day – so did young Liam watched by his brother Owen, aged seven who wants to play the drums and sister Sophie aged two.
Sadly, guitar teacher Phil Roberts of Bispham lost his battle with ill health but had received treatment from the world famous Christie Hospital in Manchester where research is helping to save many lives.
Thanks to Lucas and his original idea, a staggering £5,000 was raised and the money was divided between Christie Hospital and to support the work of Macmillan Nurses working from Blackpool Victoria Hospital to help cancer patients.
Margaret Thompson, press officer for Fleetwood Cancer Research Committee which raises funds for Christie Hospital, said: “ Liam’s idea certainly paid off and we are grateful to everyone at the Golden Eagle who helped in any way to make it all such a fantastic success.”
Members of Fleetwood Cancer Research went to the Golden Eagle to receive a cheque from Liam and his family.
They also received £420 from another Golden Eagle regular, Paul Taylor of Bleasdale Avenue, Anchorsholme. He was persuaded to take part in a charity boxing event at Fleetwood Town football club’s Highbury Avenue stadium as part of a fitness programme he had undertaken - and won his bout.
“When I heard about Liam and the fun day project I decided to give my sponsorship to Christie Hospital as well, “Paul explained.
WHEN his guitar teacher fell victim to cancer, 10-year-old Lucas Fletcher was determined to do something to help.

It’s all happening on Cleveleys high street this month. The tram tracks are finally open at Victoria Square, although your guess is as good as anyone’s as to when the work will be finished!
Down near the prom, Victoria Market has been boarded up back and front to stop fly tipping and break-ins while M&Co prepare for their rebuild and new store. Demolition of the old market will make way for brand new premises which will be exciting. At the far end of the high street, speculation ends as to what will become of
Nursery World, with the arrival of license application notices for a Sainsbury’s Local. Good news for the top of Victoria Road West, which will draw shoppers to the other end of town.
Cleveleys has been busy during the school holidays and it’s nice to see families and people enjoying the beach, even if the weather has been mixed. We are in the UK after all! Despite the weather, the Staycation seems to be gaining ground, and the (often hilarious) Visit Cleveleys Facebook following tells us that people all over the UK and abroad like our little corner of the coast.
The silly holiday season will be over by the time this hits the streets, so don’t forget to tell us all your news and plans for autumn. We want all your events to share on Facebook, and we’ve
got lots of ideas for the website to get you through the winter when it comes!
Don’t forget to send your community news to appear on www.visitCleveleys.info - a one-stop-shop for all the grassroots stuff that you want to know. Just email [email protected]

CAROUSEL OF CANDY FLOSS, POPCORN AND DOUGHNUTS AT TWELVE’S HOTSHOT EVENING
CULINARY ringmaster Graham Floyd brought all the fun of the fair to Twelve Restaurant & Lounge Bar for Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board’s Lancashire Hotshots evening!
Among the highlights of a delicious three-course menu was a dazzling quartet of fairground attraction desserts as well as masala popcorn and honeycomb lollypop!
Graham, Sous Chef at the Michelin Bib Gourmand and Taste Lancashire Highest Quality Assured restaurant, took over the kitchen as part of the tourist board’s prestigious young chef initiative which provides them with the opportunity to take over the running of their restaurant for one night.
Graham, has been working at Twelve for the last four years and trained at Blackpool & The Fylde College. Along with his parents and younger sister, he was part of a travelling circus until the age of 10 and drew on his childhood experiences to create a circus inspired menu!
Photographs and newspaper cuttings of his life in the circus were featured on the restaurant’s wall projector and there was also circus style music as diners took their ring side seats.
Paul Moss, Chef Proprietor of Twelve Restaurant & Lounge Bar, paid tribute to Graham’s leadership in the kitchen.
He said: “Graham has performed excellently this evening. He clearly demonstrated he’s got the skills and talent to juggle the demands of a busy kitchen. At Twelve we are a firm supporter of nurturing new talent in the industry and we were very pleased to be involved with the tourist board’s young chef initiative.”
Diners were given feedback forms to express their views about the evening, but initial reactions were overwhelmingly positive on the quality of the food and the variety of the menu with special praise for the fairground attraction desserts.
Graham was presented with a certificate of recognition by Tony Openshaw, Director of Marketing at Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board who said the evening had been a great success. He said: “Everyone enjoyed a great evening at Twelve! The food that Graham and his team served was delicious and the circus theme was an excel-lent idea. It is clear that standards in the Lancashire Hotshots initiative continue to grow demonstrating the great talent we have here in Lancashire.”

Paul Gailey ‘Diary of a local Councillor’
Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a
weekly diary of what he has been up to.
Friday: For the past few weeks, Councillor Williams and myself have organised a petition regarding the closure of the Lauderdale/Blandford Avenue crossing. With the help of several dedicated local residents and shopkeepers, we have achieved a staggering 3,148 signatures on our petition. It’s the biggest petition to ever have been handed into Blackpool Town Hall. Today, Tony and I officially handed the petition to officials at the Town Hall. We are very proud of everyone who has signed and everyone who helped collect the signatures from shop keepers to the people standing outside the health centre in all weathers gathering signatures. The strength the people have given me and Councillor Tony Williams to organise the fight against the closure has been enormous and I am grateful to everyone involved, I really am.
Saturday: Took my camera and had a good walk around Anchorsholme identifying pavements that are struggling with weeds. Blackpool has been divided in to four neighbourhood areas, Blackpool North, Blackpool Central, Blackpool South and Costal. Anchorsholme is in “Blackpool North” and as such we will be getting a new Neighbourhood Manager in September who will be responsible for everything from cleaning pavements to cutting the grass in parks. The plan is that rather than ring up and complain about an area which has problems with litter, blocked drains and weeds and have to speak to three separate departments, now all resources will be combined so everything will be done by one department. Once the New Neighbourhood manager starts, Councillor Tony Williams and myself will meet him to go through all the areas that need tidying especially areas that have problems with weeds or are in need of a belated spring clean.
Sunday: My girlfriend and I went to Easterleigh Rescue Centre to try and find a dog, no joy yet but we are looking hard. We are determined to get a dog from a rescue centre as it’s always rewarding to know you have given a home to a dog that no one wanted. In the afternoon I sat down and wrote up my notes about a particular aspect of planning law as on Monday evening I was presenting an objection on behalf of a number of residents to a planning application. Planning law is a very frustrating area as objections from members of the public are encouraged only then largely to be ignored by the planning system which rejects them on the grounds they have nothing to do with planning law. This is an area in my personal opinion that must be amended for all it will do in it’s present form is continue to make people think their opinions don’t matter and will alienate them from the system.
Monday: In the morning I worked from home and in the afternoon finished of my preparation for the Planning meeting, which sadly didn’t go as I wanted to, both Councillor Williams and myself put up good arguments but sadly the wishes of the residents were again ignored and as I mentioned previously this reflects badly on the planning system itself and is in need of wider reform but that’s for a different debate.
Tuesday: As Councillor Tony Williams and myself are holding a public meeting on the coming Thursday to update the local residents on what’s happening with the Lauderdale Tram crossing I spent this morning writing and printing invites to the meeting. In the afternoon my girlfriend and I delivered invitations to over 500 residents in the ward. It’s important to both me and Councillor Tony Williams that people all over the ward feel involved in this issue, and by attending meetings residents can have direct contact with us both, and can ask questions, suggest idea’s and let us know how they are feeling on the issue. In the evening I popped by to see a local shopkeeper who helped us gather many signatures on our petition and thank her for all her help.
Wednesday: I spent this morning delivering another 500 invitations to the rest of the ward and in the afternoon helped put together a funding bid to bring some computers to St Teresa’s Church Hall, so that anyone who wants to learn how to use a computer and the internet will have the ability to do so. I will keep you posted on how that bid goes. I also chased up the council about the poor state of the road on Redeswood Avenue where over the years the pot hole repairs have joined together to give a patch effect and the road is frankly not acceptable. I’m hoping to have some positive news soon for the residents about this road and again will keep everyone posted on how I get on.
Thursday: Today I spent the morning visiting two residents who contacted me with some concerns they had been having with the new lighting that has been erected around Anchorsholme recently. I’ve built a good relationship with the lighting department and am lobbying really hard to have the adopted alleyways lit, especially the alleyway that links Idlewood Place with Sevenoaks Drive, this is a popular cut through with residents who use it to catch the Number 9 bus, so if I can get lighting down here I will be really pleased. At the moment it looks promising but nothing has been confirmed so I will keep lobbying for it until they say yes as it will make a big difference to the local residents. In the evening Councillor Williams and I held the update meeting regarding the potential closure of the Lauderdale Crossing. Around 50 residents attended which was a fantastic amount considering a lot of people are away on holiday.
Friday: This morning I held some meetings regarding setting up the ‘Friends of Anchorsholme Park’ group. This group will go a long way to ensure the park becomes the park we all want it to be. If anyone would like to join the Friends group please contact me on: 01253 826 679. In the afternoon I made my Radio 4 debut as they kindly played my question on Gardeners Question Time. I asked which trees are the most suited for dealing with salty air conditions and strong winds. The panel said the whitebeam would be a good tree to plan and I’ve since found out the English Hawthorne is another good choice. Our plan over the next four years is to plant lots of trees and shrubs around Anchorsholme to improve the area that we live, if you have any suggestions for places where you would like to see trees or shrubs in your street or a street near you, just email or call me.
Many thanks Paul GalleyCouncillor for Anchorsholme

There will also be events during this period to promote volunteering, advice and money matters, which will be publicised separately and advertised in the local press and via contacts/networks.
The dates of events and office opening are as follows:-5th September - opening of partnership office19th September - mini event on volunteering (10 till 4pm)3rd October - partners to be at the office to provide advice and assistance17th October - mini event on advice (10 till 4pm)

This should be a great success that provides Thornton with a focal point and also strengthen partnership working. If you would like any further information or would like to take part in any of the events please do not hesitate to get in touch with:
