When I set out on the journey of making it my personal mission to bring world-class leadership programs to the Catholic Church, I trusted that the Lord would lead me to the people who would help me fulfill this desire He had placed in my heart. I trusted that He would provide the faith and perseverance to discover what it meant to serve our bishops, priests and lay leaders in this way. I trusted that the Lord would provide whatever resources were necessary to carry out His plan.

Could you say my trust was also a test? I’m not certain, but the Lord has certainly poured down His blessing on me and continues to bless me through the Catholic Leadership Institute. He has blessed me with

you, friends who have supported this ministry through your stewardship and helped it grow to a trusted partnership with bishops, priests and lay leaders of the Catholic Church. He has blessed me with a wonderful Leadership Team, Mission Implementation Team, Board of Directors, National Advisory Board and Episcopal Advisory Board, who help shape and

carry out the strategic plan. Most recently, He has blessed me with my successor as Chair of the Board, Mike Emmi, a trusted friend, board member and long-time supporter of Catholic Leadership Institute. I look forward to continuing to serve as a member of the Board of Directors with Mike as Chair and feel a great deal of gratitude knowing that my mission will carry on under his strong leadership.

I am also grateful that Catholic Leadership Institute launched the Catholic Leadership Institute Annual Fund and the Fr. Chuck Pfeffer Society as a way of remembering and honoring Fr. Chuck who was an integral part of shepherding this ministry from its start. I have no doubt that Fr. Chuck continues to intercede for this ministry to our Church leaders and I’m so glad his story will continue to be shared with future supporters of Catholic Leadership Institute.

Thank you for your support of our bishops, priests and lay leaders through Catholic Leadership Institute. I am so grateful that you answered the call to provide the necessary resources for this ministry. May He abundantly bless you for all that you do for our beloved Church.

In Christ,

Timothy C. Flanagan Founder & Director

As I begin my term as Chair of the Board of Directors for Catholic Leadership Institute, I want to thank you for your support and assure you of my dedication and commitment to carry out the mission of Catholic Leadership Institute.

I recently celebrated my 50th wedding anniversary with my wife, Joan; I cannot help but be reminded of Blessed Theresa of Calcutta’s quote: “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.” Both Joan and I are passionate about supporting our bishops, priests and lay leaders of the Catholic Church. Since the beginning, we have felt a special calling to be a part of Catholic Leadership Insitute and its ministry to our good shepherds. While I served on the board, Joan became very involved with fundraising events to support CLI’s ministry. We each had unique gifts to offer to serve the apostolate, united under the desire to support the mission of Catholic Leadership Institute.

Similarly, when we initially started the search for Tim’s successor, the board struggled with the idea of replacing Tim as chair. It was after some very lengthy conversation and introspection that we realized replacing Tim was not necessary. Tim would remain a part of the board with his unique gifts and talents. Tim’s successor would be someone who would bring skills that would compliment Tim’s great legacy as well as have their own unique gifts that would support Catholic Leadership Institute’s ongoing ministry and strategic direction.

When Tim approached me to consider stepping into the role as Chair, I was humbled to be asked by this great Catholic leader to carry on a legacy. After taking the decision to prayer, I truly felt that God was extending this opportunity for me to care even more intentionally for our bishops, priests and lay leaders and to continue to see Tim’s mission for world-class leadership for the Catholic Church fulfilled through Catholic Leadership Institute’s ministry.

I hope each of you know that I am grateful for your partnership in supporting Catholic Leadership Institute as I begin my tenure as Chair of the Board of Directors. I look forward to seeing where God calls this wonderful apostolate in support of our Church leaders.

In Christ,

Michael J. Emmi Chair

Fiscal Year 2014 HighlightsParish Engagement & the New EvangelizationWith a focus on Pope Francis’ call to be missionary disciples, Catholic Leadership Institute convened bishops, priests, and lay leaders for a conversation on parish engagement and the new evangelization. The conversation as well as additional meetings with Catholic thought leaders informed the develop-ment of Catholic Leadership Institute’s latest new tool, the Disciple Maker Index, which is positioned to equip pastors and parish leaders with data that will help them understand where members of their par-ish are on their spiritual journey and how well parish ministries are serving their people. Matt Manion, President & CEO, and Fr. Bill Dickinson, were invited to present the tool’s framework to the USCCB Committee on Catechesis and Evangelization. Read more about the Disciple Maker Index and first year of the pilot program in this report.

Training PriestsGood Leaders, Good Shepherds continues to support priests in the United States, Canada and the Car-ribean. Catholic Leadership graduated the 2000th priest from the program in Fiscal Year 2014 and enrolled 186 new priests. This means thousands of parishes are benefitting from good shepherds equipped to call forth the gifts of those they lead so that they can create more vibrant faith commu-nities rooted in Christ. Additionally, Catholic Leaders Online (http://online.catholicleaders.org), an online learning portal, was redesigned with a new searchable library to give graduates of our programs access to just-in-time resources to assist them in the daily leadership challenges they face.

Serving our Bishops: Integrated Diocesan ServicesThe Archdioceses of Miami, St. Louis, Boston, New Orleans and Detroit were among the first to affirm multi-year, multi-service partnerships with Catholic Leadership Institute. Catholic Leadership Institute designed a comprehensive plan incorporating a complementary suite of training and consulting ser-vices that would help support the bishop within his diocese. Among the services, Catholic Leadership Institute was able to support the Archdiocese of Miami’s Second General Synod as they concluded 18 months of work by over 800 volunteers. Catholic Leadership Institute also launched the Ninth General Synod for the Archdiocese of New Orleans in April. Read more about how Catholic Leadership Institute supports the Synod process for a diocese.

Seminary Formation: the Next Generation of PastorsThe seminary formation program based on the first modules of Good Leaders, Good Shepherds focused on self-leadership launched at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, MI and St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. Due to its success in the first year, Catholic Leadership Institute will return to both seminaries as well as expand its seminarian formation to include men at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boyton Beach, FL, Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, and Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis, MO.

Fr. Chuck Pfeffer Society and CLI Annual Fund LaunchThe launch of the Fr. Chuck Pfeffer Society and Catholic Leadership Institute Annual Fund were launched with a challenge grant. The challenge secured over $1,000,000 for the Catholic Leadership Institute An-nual Fund. These unrestricted gifts help fund the Episcopal Formation & Ongoing Support Sessions, the launch of the Disciple Maker Index, the Seminary program and a number of other projects and programs for bishops, priests and lay leaders.

“With your continued partnership, we can respond to Jesus’ call to carry out our ministry to the ministers of the Catholic Church.”

Thank you for making a difference in the life and vitality of the Church. Thank YOU, the many people who have contributed to Catholic Leadership Institute’s mission and to the mission of the Roman Catholic Church: bishops, priests, deacons, lay leaders, alumni of our leadership programs, our donors, our staff and all of those who support us through prayer and through promoting our ministry in their diocese.

In Fiscal Year 2014, with a focus of “Sowing on Rich Soil,” Catholic Leadership Institute began to see the fruits of the trusted partnerships, established programs and new tools and services developed in support of our Church leaders. With Fiscal Year 2015 underway, I am pleased to share with you three priorities to continue to sow on rich soil:

1. Parish Impact-Catholic Leadership Institute plans to increase parish planning and consulting engagements to have maximum impact on pastors and their flocks. Through leadership programs, tools, and consulting services, Catholic Leadership Institute will support vibrant faith communities at the local level.

2. Building the Institute-Catholic Leadership Institute has begun laying the foundation for the research and tools necessary to provide thought leadership to the Church, but more is still to be done. Through continued conversations and an increase in published materials, we hope to gather and share key learnings from our experience of leadership in the Church.

3. Shifting to a New Funding Discipline-to sustain this apostolate and ensure that funding will never be an obstacle for those who seek our services, Catholic Leadership Institute must shift to a new funding discipline necessary to support our ministry. As we plan for the next five years, we will deliberately envision the future, where we secure all resources necessary before beginning a service for a client.

Catholic Leadership Institute is poised to equip bishops, priests and lay leaders with the leadership skills and tools they want and need in order to awaken the faith of God’s people and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. With your continued partnership, we can respond to Jesus’ call to carry out our ministry to the ministers of the Catholic Church.

I am so grateful and humbled to serve Jesus through the Catholic Leadership Institute. The opportunity to support and serve our bishops, priests and lay leaders is a blessing I do not take for granted. Thank you for all you do to support this apostolate. You are making a difference in the lives of our leaders.

In Christ,

Matthew F. Manion President & CEO

“God is right there waiting to assist us as we act as missionary disciples and transform parishes. Continued prayerful

discernment of how to interpret the data will help Catholic parishes serve their people that much more effectively.”

~Matt Manion, President & CEO, Catholic Leadership Institute

Where are you in your faith journey? Can you imagine being a pastor and trying to figure this out for the hundreds or thousands of people you serve in your parish or parishes? Can you imagine trying to do this while also having a million other tasks demanding attention such as the start of a new parish mission, a capital campaign to renovate the Church, funerals, weddings, and, of course, Masses to be said? But where you are in your faith journey is exactly what your pastor is worried about because he has been charged as shepherd of your soul.

Catholic Leadership Institute developed the Disciple Maker Index to help pastors obtain data from the hundreds of parishioners he serves so that he can understand what the parish is doing well to help people continue to grow in their relationship with Christ and what the parish could be doing better.

Some of you might have heard about the Disciple Maker Index through the Report to Major Stakeholders for the Fr. Chuck Society, but have you started to understand the impact that this tool’s data could have in supporting our bishops, priests and lay leaders as they work to create vibrant Catholic faith communities?

In business, data is taken for granted. Data is collected everywhere, every click, every purchase, every credit card. There are millions of ways to track what people are doing over time. In business, it’s usually a question of conversion. Did they convert to a purchase after an e-mail? Did they become a member after a direct mail offer? But how does a pastor track that conversion?

It’s difficult for a pastor to know when the people of his parish are browsing or trying to discover what their faith means to their lives or when the people of his parish need more assistance in a specific area of the faith. Knowing he cannot have personal daily contact with every member of his parish, a pastor needs another way to find out when an individual in his parish is ready to take the next step in their relationship with Jesus.

The Disciple Maker Index is equipping pastors to begin to unlock that exact information. The 3 year pilot of the Disciple Maker Index launched in 22 parishes across three dioceses: Tulsa, Galveston-Houston and Pittsburgh. Through an anonymous online assessment, people have the opportunity to reflect on where they are in their faith journey and how the parish is serving or has served them on that faith journey.

Catholic Leadership Institute in partnership with Measuring Success, a firm that helps nonprofits leverage their data, compiles the answers and

provides insights for pastors. Through consultative sessions held for each diocese, pastors and their staffs start understanding the strengths of their parish and how to leverage those strengths and where they might look to change or improve. After these sessions, the pastors and their staffs return to their parishes and report back what they discovered and a plan they will implement in response to what they “heard” through the data. In two years, these same parishes will again have their people go through the online assessment to begin to track growth and change in their people’s faith journey and in the parish’s effectiveness in ministry.

In 2015, the Disciple Maker Index enters year 2 of the pilot and will launch in 6 dioceses and 75 parishes. Every parish participating will be on the same two year cycle. Two years provides time for parishes to implement new programs or strengthen current programs in such a way that a pastor should see an effect on the responses of his people which

will tell him if the changes made are helping people grow in their Catholic faith and in their relationship with Christ. In the long term parishes will also be able to see data from other parishes from various parts of the country with the same socio-economic make-up or cultural influences, helping pastors to benchmark and turn to one another for support and ideas of how to make their parish most effective.

The salvation of souls is the mission of the Catholic Church. Catholic Leadership Institute had been looking for a way to measure the impact of our programs and services but nothing existed that captures the essence of how Catholic Leadership Institute truly intends to support our bishops, priests and lay leaders as shepherds of souls. So Catholic Leadership

Institute developed a new way for measurement that gets to the heart of how parishes are equipping people in the faith so that they develop an intimate relationship with Christ and feel confident to share their faith with others. Matt Manion, President and CEO, shares, “God is right there waiting to assist us as we act as missionary disciples and transform parishes. Continued prayerful discernment of how to interpret the data will help Catholic parishes serve their people that much more effectively.”

The Disciple Maker Index is a game changer. Catholic Leadership Institute has been invited in November to present the insights from this first round of parishes to the USCCB Committee on Catechesis and Evangelization, as well as the projected plan for the next two years of the pilot program. The hope is that this tool will help pastors and parish leaders be more informed and effective as they make decisions about their parish ministries and focus resources on the activities that are most effective at forming disciples who can share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Catholic Leadership Institute

There were 8,786 responses. 89% reported attending Mass at least weekly.

Overall 57% of respondents strongly agreed they would recommend their parish to a friend and only 11% disagreed.

This is a great result.

Disciple Maker Index (DMI)

The Disciple Maker Index was created by Catholic Leadership Institute to provide parish leaders with meaningful data on the spiritual growth of parishioners and overall parish effectiveness. Year 1 of the three year national pilot study was conducted in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and the Dioceses of Tulsa and Pittsburgh. The survey was open from February 17 to March 10, 2014 and 16 pastors responsible for 21 parishes participated. Catholic Leadership Institute partnered with Measuring Success for the survey design and analysis. Of the parishioners emailed, the average response rate was 41%, which exceeded expectations. The total sample size of 8,786 responses is statistically valid for this population.

Parish Net Promoter Score (NPS)

Across for-profit and non-profit sectors, the big question, “how likely are you to recommend ___ to a friend?” has proven to be the best predictor of an organization’s future growth or struggles. The question identifies those who will, unsolicited, speak positively about your parish (promoters) and those who will, unsolicited, speak negatively about your parish (detractors). Organizations with more promoters than detractors are more likely to grow in the future. The survey results were very encouraging - 57% of respondents strongly agreed that they would recommend their parish to a friend. Given the majority of respondents are regular Mass attendees, this is not a huge surprise, and is a strength to be leveraged The top six factors that were most highly correlated with those likely to recommend their parish to a friend were:

1. Likelihood to recommend my pastor to a friend 2. Parish helps me grow spiritually 3. Offering vibrant and engaging Sunday Masses 4. Preaching and homilies that connect my faith

with my everyday life 5. Forming me as a disciple of Jesus Christ 6. Making me feel welcome and accepted

Catholic Leadership Institute provides bishops, priests, deacons and lay persons in the Roman Catholic Church with world-class, pastoral leadership formation and consulting services that strengthen their confidence and competence in ministry, enabling them to articulate a vision for their local church, to call forth the gifts of those they lead, and to create more vibrant faith communities rooted in Jesus Christ.

Can Big Data and Faith Work Together? The Disciple Maker Index

Page 8: FY14 Annual Report

“Assisting the bishop for the good of the whole diocesan community” sounds ideal, but what is Canon Law telling us? Simply put by Archbishop Wenski prior to the Archdiocese of Miami Second General Synod, a Synod is “a Church word meaning strategic planning.”

While it can be put simply, embarking on a Diocesan Synod is no small feat. With hundreds of thousands of Catholics to listen to and numerous suggestions to consider, process, and synthesize, a diocese does not typically have staff that can add significant work to their current roles in order to carry out the synod effectively. Often dioceses look to another organization to help them facilitate a synod or strategic planning process: facilitating the listening sessions, arranging focus groups on specific areas of interest, and fostering continuous communication with the people of the diocese about the benchmarks and next steps for each phase of the Synod.

Listening sessions are an opportunity for the people of the diocese to express what they are happy with and what they’d like to see improved. This is an opportunity for the bishop to hear directly from his people how they are being spiritually nourished and what more they need from the diocese. The number of listening sessions varies based on the size of the diocese, but typically enough sessions are held so that people have several opportunities from which to choose. Sometimes sessions are also hosted in languages other than English so that people can easily express their opinions without concern for not being understood.

From the listening sessions, focus groups are formed around topics that stand out among the listening sessions. A diverse group of people are selected to review the feedback from the listening sessions and discuss opportunities and challenges for the diocese. Additionally, at a higher level the areas of focus are discussed as to which should become a

priority for the diocese, which can fit within another topic, and which might not be something for the diocese to pursue at this time. From these groups, senior members of staff and select members of the diocese make recommendations to the bishop as to the priorities

for a strategic plan for the next 3-5 years. Additionally, a plan to implement these priorities is discussed and developed so that the people of the diocese know when and how these priorities, which are a result of their feedback, will be addressed.

For dioceses that have engaged with Catholic Leadership Institute for leadership formation or consulting services, having CLI facilitate this strategic planning process was a natural fit. The Archdiocese of Miami was the first to embark on this relationship with the organization. The 18-month planning process included two full-time Catholic Leadership Institute staff members based in the archdiocesan offices in Miami, as well as ongoing support by CLI leadership consultants. With the conclusion of the Synod last October, Catholic Leadership Institute has gone on to support select priorities identified during the Synod process.

Most recently, the Archdiocese of New Orleans launched their Ninth General Synod in April 2014 in partnership with CLI. The Synod is one piece of the long-standing partnership with the Archdiocese which also includes leadership formation for priests and seminarians. Additionally, Catholic Leadership Institute is facilitating the planning in preparation for a Synod for the Archdiocese of Detroit and facilitating a strategic planning process for the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Catholic Leadership Institute recognizes the importance of the synod process for a diocese and works to effectively support the bishop so that he can act on the collective feedback of his people by laying out diocesan priorities and goals. A uniting vision and supporting plan will enable the bishops, priests and lay leaders of the diocese to work together to renew and rejuvenate the faith of their people so that they may grow closer to Christ.

Understanding Synods: A Diocesan Vision & Plan

“What you have to say is important to us. Because we believe through this dialog and consultation that we will come to clarity as to what God’s vision and priorities are for us as an archdiocese.”

- Archbishop Gregory Aymond in his video introduction to the Ninth General Synod for the Archdiocese of New Orleans

“A diocesan synod is a group of selected priests and other members of the Christian faithful of a

particular church who offer assistance to the diocesan bishop for the good of the whole diocesan

community according to the norm of the following canons [461-468].” Canon 460

The Proclamation of the Ninth General Synod of the Archdiocese of New Orleans is presented to Archbishop Aymond and signed by representatives from the Archdiocese at the Chrism Mass in April.

Rosemarie Banich, Catholic Leadership Institute Leadership Consultant and CLI’s Synod Director for the Archdiocese of Miami, leads a follow-up

session for one of the new archdiocesan priorities.

Fr. Jarek invites his parishioners to open their hearts to God’s Word.

Poverty, disability, prostitution and homelessness are the realities surrounding St. Patrick’s parish in Hamilton, Ontario where Fr. Jarek Pachocki serves as co-pastor with Fr. Tony O’Dell, both Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, both currently enrolled in Good Leaders, Good Shepherds for the Diocese of Hamilton.

When they first moved into the neighborhood, a fence surrounded the church grounds−intended as a means of protection from the harsh realities of crime and vandalism in the impoverished area. However, Fr. Jarek and Fr. Tony saw the fence as a barrier, giving a message that the Church wanted to keep people out instead of invite people in.

So, on the first day, they tore the fence down.

What a statement for the people of St. Patrick’s Parish, for the community, to watch that fence come down and once again have easy access to this Catholic Church and, most importantly, to Jesus. Leaders like Fr. Jarek and Fr. Tony want to embrace their ministry fully, but know from experience that this is not without its challenges.

“There is so much happening here. Life is run on emergencies. We have usually at least two funerals per week which changes your weekly schedule. People are being evicted from their homes; a family member has been put in jail.”

St. Patrick’s is not the only parish under the charge of Fr. Jarek and Fr. Tony. They also co-pastor St. Lawrence parish which he explained is very different from St. Patrick’s and has its own set of needs. The two pastors work together leveraging their individual gifts to manage various aspects of each parish.

Fr. Jarek described Good Leaders, Good Shepherds as a “God send.” The information session was held during their annual Priest Convocation. “It was God’s will [that this opportunity presented itself],” he said. After 15 years in parishes, Fr. Jarek, like so many other pastors who have chosen to enroll in Good Leaders, Good Shepherds, was feeling

overwhelmed with the demands of parish life and the reactionary routine that was starting to develop. His ministry was beginning to feel like maintenance and he wanted to remain mission focused. “[Fr. Tony and I] have been giving our best. Good Leaders, Good Shepherds will help us do [our ministry] even better.”

His hope in signing up for Good Leaders, Good Shepherds was to learn skills to balance his life better so that he can be more effective in ministry. Fr. Jarek said, unfortunately, he cannot change the plight of his people—their poverty, their recent eviction—but he can change his perspective, how he responds, and how he approaches each opportunity to minister to his people. After the first session of the program, he truly felt “this is what I needed for this time in my ministry.” He affirmed Good Leaders, Good Shepherds for giving priests a vocabulary to name how they should respond in different situations, how they work with teams, and how they communicate with each other, with staff members and with their people.

He spoke collectively of his fellow priests in the cohort saying what a deep desire they have to be good priests for the people of God. “We want to do a good job, and also do it wisely. We cannot burn out.” Fr. Jarek’s words reach to the very heart of Catholic Leadership Institute’s service to our bishops, priests and lay leaders. Catholic Leadership Institute feels blessed to serve and support great priests like Fr. Jarek and Fr. O’Dell so that they can continue to build the Kingdom of God here on earth.

Fr. Chuck Pfeffer Society The Catholic Leadership Institute Annual Fund and the Fr. Chuck Pfeffer Society were established to enable unrestricted financial support of Catholic Leadership Institute’s unique ministry in providing leadership formation to our bishops, priests, and lay leaders, AND to recognize our benefactors for their leadership and generosity in support of our apostolate.

Among his many favorite Bible passages, Fr. Chuck Pfeffer, co-Founder of the Catholic Leadership Insti-tute, described his faith journey and his priesthood using “The Road to Emmaus” passage in Luke’s Gospel (24:13-35). In the passage, there is an unnamed disciple that is walking along with Cleopas when they encounter Jesus. Fr. Chuck often invited others to imagine themselves as the unnamed disciple walking along with Christ. Fr. Chuck saw his role as priest as a servant at the meal where the disciples recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread. He wanted to provide a space for people to come to know Christ, to be with others and to take care of them as they discover and develop a relation-ship with Jesus, to serve them as they come to know Jesus in the Eucharist.

The Catholic Leadership Institute creates a space for our Church leaders to plan for their parish or diocese, to learn more about themselves in order to best serve their parish and community, and to effectively man-age administrative tasks in order to be free to foster relationships between Jesus and the people whom they serve. As members of the Fr. Chuck Pfeffer Society of the Catholic Leadership Institute Annual Fund, these supporters are enabling Fr. Chuck’s spirit to be lived out through a number of programs and services in partner with the Church that will continue to provide our good shepherds with the tools and confidence needed in leading people to a relationship with Christ.

St. Andrew Society The Catholic Leadership Institute chose to recognize their loyal supporters by naming this society for St. Andrew, the Apostle. St. Andrew was a follower of John the Baptist, but upon meeting our Lord, knew immediately that he was the Messiah and followed him. Because of this St. Andrew is known as the first disciple of Jesus.

St. Andrew, described as the steady, quiet, courageous apostle, might not have realized how his small actions added to multiplying the work of Jesus. Bringing his brother, Simon Peter, to Jesus, St. Andrew paved the way for the Church’s first Pope, the rock upon which Jesus chose to build his Church. In the Gospel of St. John, St. Andrew tells the Lord of the boy with two loaves and two fishes, which Jesus uses to produce the miracle of loaves and fishes to feed the crowd. Simple actions, yielding great results.

Just as St. Andrew steadily appears by Jesus’ side supporting Him throughout the Gospels, so our loyal supporters stand by us as we continue to grow and expand our programs, services and outreach in support of our bishops, priests, dea-cons and lay leaders. The St. Andrew Society was established to honor all those who have loyally contributed to the Catholic Leadership Institute through continuous financial support for five or more consecutive years. Consistent annual gifts at every level enable Catholic Leadership Institute’s service to the Catholic Church. This faithful support of Catholic Leadership Insti-tute’s mission and vision continues to multiply the fruits of our ministry and our Church lead-ers’ ministry.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux Society Established to honor all those who have taken the special step of including the Catholic Leadership Institute in their long-term plans through life income, bequest and other estate and planned gifts. This legacy gift ensures ongoing leadership forma-tion and support for our bishops, priests and lay leaders that strengthen their confidence and competence in ministry.

The Society is named for St. Thérèse of Lisieux, known as the “Little Flower.” St. Thérèse left behind a spiritual legacy for the Church. Her writings did not become well known until after her passing, but have since, impacted and influenced generations of Catholics worldwide by deepening their relationship with Christ.

In September 1890, at her canonical examination before she professed her religious vows, she was asked why she had come to Carmel. She answered “I came to save souls, and especially to pray for priests.” St. Thérèse’s prayerful support of our priests and desire to enable the salvation of souls is one that is echoed in Catholic Leadership Institute’s mission and vision. A legacy gift to the Catholic Leadership Institute enables continued ministry to our bishops, priests and lay leaders so that they are empowered to minister to their people and create more vibrant faith communities rooted in Jesus Christ.

Legacy Gifts Catholic Leadership Institute recognizes the generosity and special foresight of those who have made a gift to provide for Catholic Lead-ership Institute’s future. These benefactors have designated Catholic Leadership Institute as a beneficiary in their long-term gift planning.

“I understood that if the Church had a body composed of different members, the most necessary and most noble of all could not be lacking to it, and so I understood that the Church had a Heart and that this Heart was burning with love. I understood it was Love alone that made the Church’s members act, that if Love ever became extinct, apostles would not preach the Gospel and martyrs would not shed their blood. I understood that Love comprised all vocations, that Love was everything, that it embraced all times and

places...in a word, that it was eternal!”–Story of a Soul, St. Thérèse of Lisieux
