UWI Orientation 2014

First Day: Thursday August 21, 2014 9:00 AM Second Day: Friday August 22, 2014 9:00 AM

UWI Orientation is held for all first year students. Regardless of faculty or whether you are full time or part time. If you are entering the UWI for the first time, you should attend General Orientation.

The UWI- Your new home

The University began at Mona, Jamaica, West Indies in 1948 as a College of the University of London. It achieved full university status in 1962. The Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad was converted into the St. Augustine Campus in 1961 and in 1963, a third campus was established at Cave Hill in Barbados. There is also a Centre for Hotel and Tourism Management in the Bahamas. University Centres in the non-campus countries ensure that a wide cross section of the population has access to a variety of educational resources and services and there is also an innovative distance education facility.

UWI Words Definition

Pelican This bird is the brown Pelican, found ONLY in the Caribbean region. A UWI Pelican is a student who proudly represents the UWI and specifically the Mona Campus.

Lump: Uncomplimentary term for someone who refuses to get involved in UWI activities

Ring-Road: A large one-way roundabout based in the center of the campus. Doubles as a running event in the Guild sporting activities

Guild A shortened version for the word Guild of Students or Guild Council. This is the student government, that is representative of the Guild of Students (15000+) on campus.

Lyme To socialize or to group together and have an informal recreational discussion.

‘Inte’ A two hour interactive session that takes place at the Students Union every Thursday 7pm to 9pm

Union A colloquial term for UWI Students Union. A general gathering spot for Pelicans

UWI Carnival An highly anticipated regionally themed event taking place over a weekend in March.

Pelican-isms -How we talk at UWI

Ourville A personalized form of the term OURVLE meaning Our Virtual Learning Environment. This is an online location where course material and resources are disseminated

Poui tree An iconic tree that blossoms beautiful yellow flowers signalling the start of serious studying

Beat A colloquial term for the word study

Commuter A pelican that does not reside on hall

Corn Dog A unique affordable UWI beat season meal, made of cornbread and sausage complete with toppings of your choice.

Bowl The shortened from of the UWI Mona Bowl for Sporting Excellence. This is where Pelicans go to train an compete in various sporting activities
