TO EXPRESS PREDICTION
Use will or be going to It will be cloudy tomorrow. It is going to be cloudy.
TO EXPRESS A PRIOR PLAN
Use only be going to Why did you buy this paint? Because , I am going to paint my room.
TO EXPRESS WILLINGNESS
Use only will The phone is ringing! I’ll get it.
EXPRESSING THE FUTURE IN TIME CLAUSES
When Bob comes, we will see him.
Before she leaves, she is going to finish her work.
There are going to come soon. I’ll wait until they come.
TIME CLAUSE
Rule: when + subject+ verb= a time clause Will or be going to is not used in a time
clause
Time clauses begin with: when, after, before, as soon as, until, while
Sometimes the present progressive is used in the clause:
While I am traveling in Europe next year, I’m going to save money by staying in youth hostels.
USING THE PRESENT PROGRESSIVE AND THE SIMPLE PRESENT TO EXPRESS FUTURE TIME
My wife has an appointment with a doctor. She is seeing Dr. North next Tuesday.
The present progressive may be used to express future time when the idea of the sentence concerns a planned event or definite intention.
The future meaning is indicated either by future time words or by the context.
The museum opens at ten tomorrow morning.
Classes begin next week.
Used in sentences concerning events that are on a definite schedule or timetable.
Only a few verbs are used in this way: Open, close, begin, end, start, finish, arrive, leave, come, return
FUTURE PROGRESSIVE
I will begin to study at seven. You will come at eight. I will be studying when you come.
IT EXPRESSES AN ACTIVITY THAT WILL BE IN PROGRESS AT A TIME IN THE FUTURE.
Affirmative Subject+will+be+verb ing I will be loving you for the rest of my life.
NEGATIVE I will not be loving you…
Sometimes there is no difference between the future progressive and the simple future, especially when the future event will occur at an indefinite time in the future.
Don’t be impatient. She will be coming soon. Don’t be impatient. She will come soon.
