About the Humanities 101 ProgramThe Humanities 101 program brings free, university level courses to people who have experienced barriers such as poverty, abuse, addiction, homelessness, and interruptions to their education. The Humanities 101 program works with community organizations and social service agencies to nurture passion and to provide a healthy and supportive environment where a student can experience the excitement and benefits of a post-secondary education. Graduates of the program have gone on to pursue higher education while others have become actively engaged within their communities – further demonstrating how this program has become a pillar of our commitment to student success and community engagement. This is why the program was awarded a Life of Learning Award from Calgary Learns.

Join us and support the Future Fund The value and true impact of Humanities 101 lies in its capacity to reopen the doors of learning for those like TracyRay who have encountered extreme barriers in their lives. Your support will allow us to offer free tuition, learning materials such as books and journals, childcare for those who need it, field trips and even food. Humanities 101 sparks learners’ interest in further education, and has proven to be the tool that has allowed marginalized people to re-enter the academy, to re-enter the workforce, and to re-enter society.

Donate today to give participants the opportunity to step into the classroom to learn, collaborate and make their academic aspirations a reality. Your support will make a big difference in our ability to maintain and continue to expand the reach of the Humanities 101 program, and make a lasting contribution to the future success of all participants.

Education without barriersTracyRay Lewis was at the lowest place in her life when she discovered Humanities 101. She was living on the streets of Calgary and had entered an addictions rehabilitation program when her counsellor encouraged her to register for St. Mary’s University’s award-winning program. Shortly after, she found herself in a place she never imagined she’d belong: a university classroom!

Even though voices from her past continued to haunt her — “As a young adult, I was told that I was not the kind of person that’s allowed to go to university” — she realized with excitement “that I could do the work.”

In time, the classroom became a safe place for TracyRay. “At this point I learned to rewrite my narrative and stopped listening to voices from past negative experiences.”

TracyRay progressed through her recovery, graduated from the Humanities 101 program and finally had enough confidence to enroll in a university degree at St. Mary’s. In 2013 she graduated from St. Mary’s University with a Bachelor of Arts in English. St. Mary’s also enabled her to reconnect with her Cree and Métis culture and she was presented with her Métis sash by St. Mary’s University Elder Edmee Comstock at a moving ceremony last year.

Today, TracyRay is a St. Mary’s University Humanities 101 co-facilitator assisting the program in its recruitment assessments. She is also a Peer Resource worker at Alex Community Food Centre and does independent Community research. She has become a Spokesperson for low income and marginalized persons.
