Commonwealth

A government established in Britain and Ireland in 1649, after the execution of King Charles I. It was in the form of a republic, under the leadership of Parliament. Oliver Cromwell soon assumed the supreme power in the Commonwealth and was given the title Lord Protector.

The Glorious Revolution established the victory of Parliament over the King. Various contested issues of power were resolved in favor of Parliament. Parliament had to be convened regularly. All new taxes had to be approved by Parliament

There is no clear explanation for the use of green in the House of Commons. This tradition originated in the 16th century with the House of Commons decorated in green and the House of Lords in red.

Churchill himself before 1914 was a supporter of Home Rule for Ireland, Scotland and Wales. If his proposals for Irish Home Rule had been implemented before the First World War, the twenty-six counties might still be a part of the United Kingdom today
