Current Situation of European CME

Continuing medical education (CME) systems are already

in place in many european countries

Some countries approach the implementation of a CME

system

National accreditation authorities are established by the

medical profession or as governmental bodies

Europe is slowly striving towards obligatory CME systems

(free movement of MDs and patients within the EU,

pressure from nat. authorities,

health insurance companies etc.)

Page 9: Future Improvements in European CME/CPD: a Personal View Lino Gonçalves.

European CME: Why do we need it?

• European CME is needed for the accreditation of any CME-Event/Product in Medicine at the European level

Need for HarmonisationNeed for Harmonisation

• European CME must be independent from Providers, Societies (National, ESC, Universities,.....), Industry (Pharma. Ind., med.-tech. Ind.)

Need for an Independent AccreditorNeed for an Independent Accreditor

European CME: What Should be Accredited ?

Page 16: Future Improvements in European CME/CPD: a Personal View Lino Gonçalves.

Deal with international accreditation only.

Use of international languages (other than

English) should be allowed.

Satellite symposia from industry must not be

accredited.

Monitors should be sent to some meetings.

Report forms should be collected and analysed.

European CME: How should it work ?

Page 17: Future Improvements in European CME/CPD: a Personal View Lino Gonçalves.

Increase the number of applications.

Accreditation of „new“ forms of CME.

More involvement of the NAAs.

Further develop EACCME as a global

accreditation organisation.

Continue to respond to the needs of the

profession.

Current Situation of European Certification

Certification systems are already in place in many

european countries.

Some countries approach the implementation of a

certification system

Some specialties/subpecialties are already running

european exams (without coordination and without a common

framework).

Europe is slowly striving towards obligatory certification and

maybe even re-certification

(free movement of MDs and patients within the EU,

pressure from nat. authorities,

health insurance companies etc.)

Page 22: Future Improvements in European CME/CPD: a Personal View Lino Gonçalves.

Develop a Review or Governance Board similar to what

was proposed to EACCME.

Regulate the certification at the European level.

Establish a general template for the European Certification

for all specialties/subspecialties.

Supervise the certification performed by Sections & Boards

(quality control).

Support those Sections & Boards that need assistance.

Communicate on a regular basis with the NAAs.

Report on a regular basis to the UEMS Executive.
