The traffic problems in Africa are worse than in

most other places on the planet

• In 2012 the World Bank calculated

that Cairo loses an estimated $8

billion annually to traffic congestion.

• In 2015, the population of Lagos

surpassed Cairo's to become the

biggest city in Africa.

• Kinshasa-Brazzaville is predicted to

become Africa’s largest, and the

world’s 11th largest, city by 2025.

And by 2050, African cities will have 3 citizens for

every 1 they have today!

Africa’s rate of urbanization soared from 15% in 1960 to 40% in 2010, and is

projected to reach 60% in 2050 (UN

Habitat 2010), while the population will

double between now and 2050

In 2015 the African urban population was standing at 400

million people.

In the next 35 years, that number will climb by a

staggering 800 million people!

Let us put African urbanization growth into

perspective…

The urbanised population

of China is projected to reach 800 million people

sometime in 2017!

In the next 35 years, that number is expected to

climb by only 200 million

people

Currently, African cities do not cope with population growth and will

have to be re-fitted just to handle their current populations.

On top of this, Africa only has 35 years to build the

equivalent of every single city in the whole of China!

Globally, Automated Personal Rapid Transit (PRT)

is seen as the future of public transportation

PRT, also referred to as podcars, is a public transport mode featuring small

automated vehicles operating on a network of specially built guideways

Page 7: Futran Podcars - SANEDI Mobility/images/Presentations... · project was funded by the Ministry of Science, ... air brakes to supplement the regenerating brakes and two attachment

Various forms of driverless, automated PRT systems

are being developed or deployed around the world

Suspended PRT podcars however hold the

greatest promise for low cost, mass transit

• Use existing right of way

• Easier control system

• Nothing can block the track

• Lower track cost

• No traffic disruptions

• Retain use of land below

• Run into buildings

• Easily Crosses rivers, roads etc.

• Massive solar power real estate

• Snow, rain, mud immune

• Enhanced passenger safety

• Enhanced pedestrian safety

• Higher throughput

The Wuppertal Suspended bus system has been

operational since 1901!

Unlike PRT, this system uses drivers, are not automated, run on schedule, stop

at every station and cannot operate 24 hours per day

Mitsubishi deployed a very successful system in two

Japanese cities over the past 35 years

Similar to the Wuppertal system, this is a bus system and not an automated PRT

system, but still its benefits are significant

Similarly, the Siemens designed H-Bahn bus system in

Dortmund and Dusseldorf is running very successfully

This is also a bus system and not an automated PRT system

The Mexican government invested in the creation

of their own suspended PRT system

OEM Online City México: Given the mobility problems that occur in

Mexico City, Urban Transport High Custom (TUEP), whose prototype

project was funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (SECITI), can be a complementary system to public

transport such as Metro and Metrobus, due to its low cost of

operation and maintenance.

SECITI argued that it should begin running in Polanco-Santa Fe, an

area with a high population growth and mobility problems.

The competition to launch the public

transportation system of the future is now on!

SKYTRAN; LAGOS, NIGERIA APRIL 21, 2016

skyTran® Inc., headquartered at NASA Research

Park and NataZone Ltd. announced their intention

to build a 40+ KM system in Lagos, Nigeria... It

provides skyTran with an important foothold in the

awakening Africa transportation sector, and joins

other skyTran initiatives in India, Israel, France, and

the USA.

JPODS

In April 2016 Bill James (JPods) negotiated $70 m

equity and $600m project financing for JPOD PRT

systems in China and the USA…

Latest announcements of clients that are ready

to procure

• India, New Delhi, 6 October 2016: The government will

soon implement the Personal Rapid Transit or Metrino

project in the National Capital Region, Transport

Minister Nitin Gadkari said. The pilot project, which will

cost (US$ 200 million), have a 12.3-km track, 13 stations

and 1 100 pods.

• Abu Dhabi, 14 January 2017: Abu Dhabi’s renewable

energy company Masdar is inviting selected industry

specialists to develop the next phase of the driverless

vehicle transit network serving its flagship sustainable

urban development Masdar City.

South America – Mass transit cable carts

This new wave of urban chairlift construction kicked

off in Medellín, Colombia, which introduced the new

system to serve underprivileged hilltop

neighbourhoods. Soon, the idea caught on across

Latin America, and cable cars began hauling

passengers in major cities such as Caracas,

Manizales, Rio de Janeiro, and most recently La Paz,

Bolivia.

The first Futran System mining site is going live in January

2018

For this client, we have to haul 350 000 tons of coal per

month over 2.7 kms, across a road and a railway line,

at a much reduced rate to that of a trucking solution…

The core of the mobile unit (Nutran) is the motorised bogie

with its slave bogies from which the skips are attached

The Nutran consists of the motorised bogie that clamps to the track

between the top drive wheel and the bottom clamping wheels, four slave bogies arranged in 2 groups, directional rollers forcing it to run

on the track, air brakes to supplement the regenerating brakes and

two attachment arms to attach the skips to.

Public transit funded by the private sector and

running at a profit!?

• The technology was developed to allow low cost public transportation that can run at a profit!

• Our model is to deploy the public transit systems, in collaboration and partnership with local authorities, using private sector funding, and then operating them at a profit without subsidization from the state or local authorities

The objective is to enable low cost, safe, reliable, environmentally friendly public transportation for the

poorest of the poor!

Bookings and payment can be made using one

of three systems

1. Mobile phone app

The preferred payment and booking

method where you register your phone,

credit card and personal details for easy

payment and booking

2. Station based kiosk

Station based kiosks will be available for

instances where people do not have time to

download the app, or do not understand it,

or prefer credit card payments over online

payments

3. Pre-loaded access

card

Pre-loaded cards can be purchased at the

kiosks, but will also be available from travel

agents and hotels, especially for foreign

visitors and cruise liner passengers

With the Futran Podcar System, distance becomes

almost irrelevant

WITH THE FUTRAN SYSTEM, urban necessities are within minutes of each other, making

it the same as if you walked there if they were right next to each other!

Green technology: It is easy to deploy large solar

systems on top of the Futran System track

The tracks are

suspended in the air

and the pods do not run

on top of them, so the

space is available for

solar panels, making it

possible to deploy the

system as an

Independent Power

Producer generating up

to 1MW of electricity per

kilometre of track

Environmentally friendly

• With a VERY small footprint on the ground, the system makes little impact on the environment

• Rivers, streams, wetlands, valleys, hills can be traversed easily and with little impact

• Animals, agriculture, wildlife and natural vegetation will not be disturbed by the units moving overhead

• The track is sleek and visually appealing

• Piling can be used to limit the footprint on the ground even more

With its small footprint and height above the ground, the Futran System will have very little impact on the

environment

Environmentally friendly: Environmental awards

The Futran System won the 2016 South African World Wildlife Foundation Climate Solver award for the technology that holds the promise of making the biggest impact on carbon reduction

• Hotels will be offered special rates for private pod travel of 100km per guest per day (i.e. R40 per guest per day)

• These rates can be included in the hotel room rate to make travel free of charge for the guest when using their room key card

• Guests will be entertained and given city information in their own language
