Properties

PVC-U (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride) is the most widely used plastic in pipe installations. It is suitable for both interior and exterior applications, as well as buried pipelines. It has excellent chemical resistance and a smooth bore. This eliminates build-up of scale and gives good flow characteristics. It is odourless and tasteless; making it suitable for conveying drinking water and many food products. It has good abrasion resistance and weathering qualities as well as good thermal and electrical insulation. PVC-U is light and clean to handle and can be easily jointed.

Chemical Resistance

PVC-U is resistant to most solutions of acids, alkalis, salts and solvents that can be mixed with water. However, it is not resistant to aromatic and chlo-rinated hydrocarbons. Detailed information about this plastic and LW·VFKHPLFDOUHVLVWDQFHFDQEHobtained by contacting Fusion.

Technical Help

)XVLRQ·VVDOHVVSHFLDOLVWVZLOOEHpleased to help with solutions to technical problems and also give advisory assistance in the planning and installation of plastics pipeline systems.

Temperature and Pressure

The permissible working tempera-ture range for PVC-U pipe systems is from 0°C to 60°C.

Pressure ratings of pipe and fittings are most often quoted at a temperature of 20°C. They can be used at higher temperatures but, if the temperature is increased then the pressure must be reduced.

Solvent Cements

A satisfactory solvent cement must be used for jointing PVC-U pipe and fittings. We recommend TANGIT which is a gap-filling cement of thick consistency. Non gap-filling cements must never be XVHGZLWK)XVLRQ·V*)*HRUJFischer fittings and valves.

Solvent cement creates a chemical bond between the pipe and the fitting. It is a simple and effective method for jointing. It is also permanent so please follow the correct procedure during the ap-plication of the cement.

Joints made with TANGIT remain unaffected by almost all fluid for which PVC-U is suitable. However, prolonged exposure of the inside joint edge to any of the following acid concentrations may cause some deterioration of the cement bonding:

• Sulphuric acid over 70% • Hydrochloric acid over 25% • Nitric acid over 20% • Hydrofluoric acid in all

concentrations.

PVC-U Grey Schedule 80 Pipe

1. Figures for pressure rating at 23°c are rounded off from actual calculated values. Pressure ratings for other temperatures are calculated from 23°c values.

2. Pressure rating values are for PVC-U ( 12454-B ) pipe and for most values are calculated from the experimentally determined long term strength of PVC1 extrusion compounds. Because moulding compounds may differ in long term strength and elevated temperature properties from pipe compounds, piping systems consisting of extruded pipe and moulding fittings may have

lower pressure ratings than those shown here (particularly at the higher temperatures). Caution should be exercised when designing PVC-U systems operating above 40°C.

3. Pressure ratings are provided for solvent cemented systems. When adding valves, flanges or other components, the system must be derated to the rating of the lowest component.

4. Schedule 80 PVC-U Pipe & Fittings comply with NSF 61, and Potable water regulations.

General Information

Polyethylene has a chemical formula of H(CH2-CH2)nH; an environmentally friendly hydrocarbon product. PE is a nonpolar material making it insoluble in common solvents and hardly swells. Therefore solvent cements cannot be used with PE. The appropriate jointing method for this material is welding. For piping installations, Fusion offers three welding techniques: butt fusion, socket welding and electrofusion.

Electrofusion is preferred for piping systems transporting gas, water, compressed air or other less aggressive media. Butt and socket welding are preferably used on a diameter-specific basis. Polyethylene comes in grades classified by their internal pressure resistance in PE80 (MRS 8 MPa) and PE100 (MRS 10 Mpa).

PE is most commonly used for buried gas and water lines. Also, building technology and industrial piping installations make use of this material.

PE is a hydrocarbon of high molecular weight and shows a high resistance against chemical attack. It is resistant to acids, alkaline solutions, solvents, alcohol and water. However, fat and oil swell PE slightly and it is not resistant against oxidising acids, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Georg Fischer

PE Pressure Pipe

Systems

If polyethylene is exposed to direct sunlight over a long period of time, it will be damaged by the short wave UV portion of sunlight together with oxygen in the air, causing photo-oxidation. Black polyethylene grades are effectively stabilised against UV light by adding carbon black.

PE also has excellent resistance against abrasion This makes it useful in numerous applications for transporting solids and slurries.

For more detailed chemical resistance information please refer to tools such as ChemRes Plus (available online from goo.gl/nPVs3) or contact Fusion via email at [email protected].

Thermal properties

Polyethylene pipes can be used at temperatures ranging from -50 °C to +60 °C. At higher temperatures, the tensile strength and stiffness of the material is reduced. Please consult a pressure-temperature diagram (Which you can find here: goo.gl/fYIOL). For temperatures below 0°C, it must be ensured that the medium does not freeze, consequently damaging the piping system.

PE allows for higher thermal H[SDQVLRQWKDQPHWDO)XVLRQ·V3(has a coefficient of linear thermal expansion of 0.15 to 0.20 mm/m K; 1.5 times greater than that of PVC. The thermal conductivity is 0.38 W/m K. A PE piping system is notably more economical than a system made of a metal like copper.

Advantages

• Low weight. • Outstanding flexibility. • Good abrasion resistance. • Corrosion resistance. • Highly impact resistant (even at

low temperatures). • Good chemical resistance. • Safe and easy jointing by

welding. • Excellent cost-performance

ratio. • Great chemical, weathering, and

abrasion resistance.

General Information

CPVC is a post-chlorinated polyvinylchloride; used in many industrial applications since 1958. Its chemical structure is similar to PVC-U, however CPVC offers better mechanical strength char-acteristics. This is especially so at high temperatures together with a better chemical resistance. The flame retardation performance of CPVC is also better than that of PVC-U.

These properties have led to the use of CPVC in many wide and varying applications; not only as piping system components, but also in semi-finished product appli-cations in chemical and aerospace industries. As a pressure piping system CPVC lends itself to highly corrosive environments where the likes of stainless steel and even GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) have relatively short lifespans. Semi-finished products, pumps, valves and all the standard acces-sories required for the transmis-sion of fluids can be found in CPVC.

Advantages

• Excellent chemical resistance. • Long life span even in highly

corrosive conditions. • Low material costs. • Quick and easy installation. • Very low maintenance costs. • Smooth internal surface. • No natural corrosion. • No electrolytic corrosion. • Very low thermal conductivity.

Chemical Resistance

CPVC offers wide ranging chemical resistance against many aggressive mediums at high tem-peratures and high concentrations. CPVC is resistant to sodium chlo-rites, chlorates and hypochlorites, many varied mixed acid solutions and chlorine gas.

The above resistance character-istics are also true, with certain exceptions, for jointing CPVC. Jointing is achieved using a gap filling solvent cement containing CPVC.

For more detailed chemical resist-ance information please refer to tools such as ChemRes Plus (available online from goo.gl/nPVs3) or contact Fusion via email at [email protected].

Thermal Conducivity

It is an inherent advantage of all plastics that they act as an insula-tor. CPVC is no exception.

CPVC has a thermal conductiv-ity of 0.2W/m°C. Steel is ap-proximately 250W/m°C. This gives CPVC many inherent advantages with regard to energy efficiency and insulation requirements.

CPVC Schedule 80 Pressure Pipe

Pressure rating of pipe at service temperature (bar)

1. Figures for pressure rating at 23°C are rounded off from actual calculated values. Pressure ratings for other temperatures are calculated from 23°C values.

2. Pressure rating values are for CPVC ( 23447-B ) pipe and for most values are calculated from the experimentally determined long term strength of CPVC extrusion compounds. Because moulding compounds may differ in long term strength and elevated temperature properties from pipe com-pounds, piping systems consisting of extruded pipe and moulding fittings may have lower pressure ratings than those shown here, particularly at the higher temperatures. Caution should be exercised when designing CPVC systems operating above 82°C.

3. Pressure ratings given are for solvent cemented systems. When adding valves, flanges or other components, the system must be derated to the rating of the lowest component.

4. Schedule 80 CPVC pipe & fittings comply with NSF 61, and Potable water regulations.

Properties

Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is a versatile standard polymer. Its applications most commonly include use in piping systems, automotive and high-quality household devices. The three components in ABS are: acrylonitrile, styrene and polyb-utadiene. Acrylonitrile provides strength to the material and gives ABS an improved chemical resistance. The styrene com-ponent provides both strength and a quality surface finish. The chemically bound polybutadiene-rubber particles give the material its toughness and impact strength, even at very low temperatures.

)XVLRQ·V$%6DOORZVIRUDJRRGbalance between toughness and strength, making it especially suitable for low temperature ap-plications. This makes the main areas of application for ABS: refrig-eration, air-conditioning and water treatment.

Resistance Properties

ABS is resistant to water, salt solutions and most dilute acids and bases. However, resistance to alcohols, aliphatic hydrocarbons, oils and greases is limited. ABS is not resistant to concentrated mineral acids, organic acids and solvents.

Polybutadiene rubber particles in ABS allow an outstanding resist-ance against abrasion. This makes ABS perfect for use in transport-ing solids and slurries in mining applications.

ABS offers considerable advan-tages over metal and other plastics for many such applications.

ABS Pressure

Pipe Systems

For more detailed chemical resist-ance information please refer to tools such as ChemRes Plus (available online from goo.gl/nPVs3) or contact Fusion via email at [email protected].

Thermal properties

ABS can withstand temperatures between -40°C and +60°C. At higher temperatures, the tensile strength and stiffness of the material drop and at lower temper-atures, they rise. Please consult an ABS pressure-temperature diagram (goo.gl/WMWqu) for your maximum working tempera-ture when under pressure.

ABS shows a higher thermal expansion than metals. However, this is not a problem if the thermal expansion is taken into account during the planning stage of the piping system. The expansion co-efficient amounts to 0.1 mm/m K in the application temperature range. At 0.17 W/m K, the heat conductiv-ity of ABS is very low. Because of the insulation properties of the material and the resulting savings in energy or insulation, an ABS piping system is notably more economical in comparison to a system made of copper (370 W/m K) or other metals. Should there be a need for additional insulation, e.g. In cooling applications please ask Fusion at [email protected] about COOL-FIT, a system specially dedicated to this market.

Advantages

• High impact strength (even at low temperatures).

• Corrosion resistance. • Simple installation using solvent

cement joints. • Low heat conductivity. • Halogen free. • Nontoxic. • Biologically inert; no support of

microbial growth. • Low weight. • Low pressure losses due to

smooth surfaces. • Good abrasion resistance. • Problem-free recycling.
