This system of part numbering also serves as an economy measure. Instead of the Army, Navy, AirForce, and civil agencies each purchasing and maintaining large stocks of materials, all agencies canmake use of centralized stocks. North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries also use thefederal catalogue system.
The NATO Stock Number is made up of a 13 digit numerical code number, the exampleBelow uses NSN: 5905-00-7345199 to show its construction.
59 is the GROUP, in this case 'Electrical and Electronic Equipment Components'5905 is the CLASS, in this case 'Resistors'00 is the NCB Code, in this case 'The United States'
(eg 12 = Germany, 14 = France , 99 = United Kingdom, etc)7345199 is the Non Significant number which, with the NCB code, uniquely identifies the item.
EXAMPLE NATO STOCK NUMBER (NSN)
The marine environment for electrical parts requires special types of fuses and holders. Suchfuses are available for this environment which are made of corrosion-resistant construction,a-magnetic, shock and shake proof. Panel mount and inline fuse holders are also available whichare water resistant or water proof.
Special fuses are available for the protection of underground electronic and electrical installations.Such fuses are designed to allow equipment to meet Intrinsically Safe certification for applicationsin gas plants, petrochemical and processing industries where there is danger of gas explosions fromfaulty circuits.

Although the range of electronic circuit protection products continues to grow, so too does the demands andapplications of these products. Whilst many traditional products like the cartridge fuse are still widely used, newtechnologies like surface mount fuses and re-settable fuses are now the growth markets. Not that long ago, a fusewas one of the largest components on a PCB. In more recent times, with the introduction of the ‘0402’ chip sizefuse, fuses are now one of the smallest components on a printed circuit board. The rapid acceptance and increasingdemand of new technologies like the re-settable fuses (PTC’s) has also created a wider range of options available tothe market. This extended range of fuses and re-settable fuses now provides electronic engineers more flexibilityfor future product designs. Should you have difficulty deciding which product best meets your requirements, pleasecontact sales for further assistance.

In chemical plants or oil refineries handling flammable liquids and gases, the risks of explosion are apparent. Thereare many thousands of sensors in a typical plant connected to the main control room. If a fault occurs on themonitoring equipment within the control room, sufficient energy could be transmitted back to a sensor, causingsparks or overheating, which could set off an explosion. Therefore stringent requirements are specified by safetyauthorities to limit the energy that can be passed down these sensor connections. One option is placing a barriernetwork in every sensor line to prevent the transmission of sufficient electrical energy to cause a spark at thesensor. In its simplest form, a Barrier Network consists of a fuse and resistor in series with the line and Zener diodeconnected in parallel with the sensor. Momentary transients are absorbed by the Zener diode, while for majorsustained faults the fuse blows.

The automotive market continues to become more sophisticated. Vehicles have far more features than ever before. What were once considered to be luxury options in the past, are now today’s standard. It is easy to predict thatfuture demands will be even greater. In addtion to these new requirements is the development of alternative powersources such as electric, electric hybrid, solar and even hydrogen powered vehicles. The circuit protection industryhas been working closely with automotive manufacturers to develop potential products that will meet these newcircuit protection requirements. Higher amperage / voltage fuse products will be required, however all the usualconstraints such as size, weight and cost will typically prove to be factors in determining what will become the newstandard. This section offers many products suited to the automotive field which includes cars, motor bikes, trucks, lift trucks, scooters and various marine products. Please contact sales for further information regarding the latestdevelopments.

We carry a complete range of automotive glass fuses. Please use the following index to find the fuse you require.
Created by Littelfuse for OEM electric vehicle programs, the EVAX fuse is
designed to protect wires and components for applications such as battery
heaters, DC/DC converters, oil pumps, air conditioning and power
steering. The EVAX fuse is rated at 600VDC and currently available in
prototypes from 5A to 30A. It will soon be available in 2 package sizes rated
from 5A to 40A and 60A. Maximum interrupt current rating 3000A.
The EVAX design differs from power fuses in 2 important ways;1. The EVAX is the first high voltage product to use a male blade terminal.2. It features a touch safe, all plastic outer body.
Designed for high current circuit protection up to 500A. Ideal for battery and alternator connectors and other
heavy gauge cables requiring ultra-high current protection.

The semiconductor fuse range is continually improving. Increased performance with a reduction inoverall size are the more notable improvements, whilst some ranges now feature a wider array of options andapprovals. Cartridge and knife blade type fuses have demonstrated increased popularity over some of the originalbolt down tag fuses. This trend stems from the ease and speed of replacement which has become a critical factor inthe design process. Added features such as striker pins are also important determining factors when choosing theappropriate product. Striker pins can be used for either visual indication (to show that the fuse has opened), or totrigger a micro-switch which can then relay the message. Our product range has also been expanded to includefuses with higher voltage and ampere ratings. Please contact sales should you have further questions.

The industrial fuse range is extremely large. This range is comprised of both cartridge and tag type fuses, whichfeature approvals in almost every available international standard. When designing new applications, manyfactors need to be considered such as price, physical dimensions, fuse holder options and ease of assembly.Cartridge fuses are fast becoming the standard where lower ampere ratings are required and with such anextremely large range available, cartridge fuses can be sourced that are approved to almost any internationalstandard. Where higher ampere ratings are required, knife blade fuses are the standard, however these are limitedto European approvals only. This section features products able to fulfill all your fusing requirements frommultimeters to switchboards. Please contact sales for further information.

This new section showcases our expanded range of high voltage products which now includes medium voltagefuses, potential transformer fuses, traction fuses and other high voltage fuses. Cartridge fuses have again proven tobe a popular design choice for high voltage applications. The two main driving factors behind this trend areefficiency of replacement and cost. Although this section only provides general information for each product, theproducts featured represent the major options that are available on the market. Generally, products built toEuropean standards are the dominant products on offer, however specialist ranges from North American are alsoavailable upon request. You will now find that fuses built to DIN standards now include new technologies such asthermal strikers. Please contact sales for further information.

In presence of large time constants and comparatively small prospective currents, the interruption of a pure DC
current (voltage that does not pass through zero) can only be achieved by fuses especially designed for such
applications. These fuses, which can also be used with AC, are especially suitable for low frequencies. Ranges with
“g” type operation are mainly used in distribution, protection of traction auxiliary circuits, filters, overvoltage
absorbers and measuring circuits.

POWR-BLOKS power distribution and splicer blocks offer a safe, convenient way of splicing cables, providing a fixed junction
tap-off point, or splitting primary power into secondary circuits. Blocks have one or two primary inputs, with up to twelve
secondary outputs per pole. The number of poles available ranges from one to four. New
Typical applications include heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, elevator systems, material handling equipment,
control panels, motor controls, switchgear, and anywhere power needs to be distributed to more than one load.
Box lug connectors are designed for use with a single, solid or class B or C stranded conductor. Use of more than one
conductor per connector opening or use of extra-flexible, fine stranded conductors, such as welding cable, voids the UL listing,
and may cause overheating. Manufacturers of cable terminations can furnish crimp-on sleeves for fine stranded conductors
which permit these conductors to be used with box lugs.
The ampere rating per pole for power distribution blocks is based on the line ampacity of 75 deg C insulated conductors per
NEC Table 310-16. If 60 deg C insulated conductors are used, load must not exceed the ampacity of 60 deg C conductors. Use
of conductors rated in excess of 75 deg C is permitted (for example 90 deg C), however, load must not exceed the ampacity of
75 deg C conductors.

Ampere Rating
Ambient Temperature
Breaking Capacity
Cartridge Fuse
Clearing Time
Current Limitation
Derating
Dual Element Fuse
Fast Acting Fuse
The current carrying capacity of a fuse. When a fuse issubjected to a current above its ampere rating, it willopen the circuit after a predetermined period of time.
The temperature of the air immediately surroundingthe fuse and is not to be confused with “roomtemperature”. The fuse ambient temperature isappreciably higher in many cases, because it is enclosed(as in a panel mount fuseholder) or mounted near otherheat producing components, such as resistors, transformers, etc.
(See interrupting rating)
A fuse consisting of a current responsive element insidea fuse tube with terminals at both ends.
The total time between the beginning of theovercurrent and the final opening of the circuit at ratedvoltage by an overcurrent protective device. Clearingtime is the total of the melting time and the arcing time.
A fuse operation relating to short circuits only. When afuse operates in its current limiting range, it will clear ashort circuit in less than 1/2 cycle. Also, it will limit theinstantaneous peak let-thru current to a valuesubstantially less than that obtainable in the samecircuit if that fuse was replaced with a solid conductorof equal impedance.
In 25°C ambient temperatures, it is recommended thatfuses operate at no more than 75% of the nominalcurrent rating established using the controlled set oftest conditions. Contact us for more information.
Fuse with a special design that utilizes two individualelements in series inside the fuse tube. One element, the spring actuated trigger assembly, operates onoverloads up to 5-6 times the fuse current rating. Theother element, the short circuit section operates onshort circuits up to their interrupting rating.
A fuse which opens on overload and short circuits veryquickly. This type of fuse is not designed to withstandtemporary overload currents associated with someelectrical loads.
Fuse CharacteristicsThe characteristics of a fuse design refers to howrapidly the fuse responds to various current overloads.Fuse characteristics can be classified into three generalcategories: very fast acting, fast acting, or slo-blo. Slo-blo fuses have additional thermal inertia designed totolerate normal initial or start-up overload pulses.

Peak Let-Thru Current, Ip
Also known as the breaking capacity or short circuitrating is the maximum approved current which the fusecan safely interrupt at rated voltage. During a fault orshort circuit condition, a fuse may receive aninstantaneous overload current many times greaterthan its normal operating current. Safe operationrequires that the fuse remain intact (No explosion orbody rupture) and clear the circuit.LBC = Low Breaking CapacityHRC =High Breaking CapacityEBC = Enhanced Breaking Capacity.
An overcurrent protective device with a fusible link thatoperates and opens the circuit in an overcurrentcondition.
Fuses with no intentional time delay in the overloadrange and designed to open as quickly as possible in theshort circuit range. These fuses are often used toprotect solid state devices.
The unit of measure for electric resistance. One Ohm isthe amount of resistance that will allow one Ampere toflow under a pressure of one Volt.
The relationship between voltage, current, andresistance, expressed by the equation E = IR, where E isthe voltage in Volts, I is the current in Amperes, and R isthe resistance in Ohms.
A condition which exists in an electrical circuit when thenormal load current is exceeded. Overcurrents take ontwo separate characteristics -overloads and shortcircuits.
Can be classified as an overcurrent which exceeds thenormal full load current of a circuit. Also characteristicof this type of overcurrent is that it does not leave thenormal current carrying path of the circuit - that is, itflows from the source, through the conductors, throughthe load, back through the conductors, to the sourceagain.
The instantaneous value of peak current let thru by acurrent limiting fuse, when it operates in its currentlimiting range.

FUSEOLOGY
Resistive Load
R.M.S. Current
Semiconductor Fuses
An electrical load which is characteristic of not havingany significant inrush current. When a resistive load isenergized, the current rises instantly to its steady statevalue, without first rising to a higher value.
The R.M.S. (root mean square) value of any periodiccurrent is equal to the value of a direct current which, flowing through a resistance, produces the sameheating effect in the resistance as the periodic currentdoes.
Fuses used to protect solid state devices. See "HighSpeed Fuses".
Short Circuit
Time-Delay Fuse
Voltage Rating
Can be classified as an overcurrent which exceeds thenormal full load current of a circuit by a factor manytimes (tens, hundreds or thousands) greater. Alsocharacteristic of this type of overcurrent is that it leavesthe normal current carrying path of the circuit, taking a"short cut" around the load and back to the source.
A fuse with a built-in delay that allows temporary andharmless inrush currents to pass without opening, but isdesigned to open on sustained overloads and shortcircuits.
The maximum open circuit voltage in which a fuse canbe used, yet safely interrupt an overcurrent. Exceedingthe voltage rating of a fuse impairs its ability to clear anoverload or short circuit safely.

COMPARISON of aR vs. gR SEMICONDUCTOR FUSES
OPTIMAL PROTECTION OF POWER EQUIPMENTThanks to recent technological developments, Ferraz Shawmuttoday markets gR-class PROTISTOR fuses capable of clearing alltypes of overloads, from low multiples of current ratings up tovery high short-circuit currents. Enhanced performance enablesthese fuses to provide solutions to many previously unsolvedproblems in power electronics: protection of cables without theuse of additional components, protection of equipment from firehazards, selective coordination of different fuses within a singlepower distribution installation.
Example: 100A aR vs. 100A gR
Example of selective coordination.
AFTERBEFORE
B
FERRAZ SHAWMUT EXPERTISEgR-class fuses should be used in the design of low voltageequipment and in the protection of power electronicsequipment. Designers can often substitute a gR-class fuse foran aR-class fuse (10x38, 14x51, 22x58, PSC 000 and 17x49DIN80 or BS 88-4) but the reverse is not true: an aR fuse cannever replace a gR fuse. Start protecting your new equipmentwith gR-class fuses today. The application of gR class fuses, with current ratings less than 100 Amps, offers enhancedprotection, safety and reliability, along with reduced risk ofreplacement errors and assembly costs.
SELECTIVE COORDINATIONgR-class semiconductor fuses can be utilized in associationwith gl and gG-class low voltage power distribution fuses ofthe same current rating, installed upstream. In a "selectivelycoordinated" distribution installation, melting is limited to thefuse associated with the faulted circuit, while upstream fusesremain intact. This prevents unnecessary down-time due topower blackouts in non-faulted branches.
aR-CLASS vs. gR-CLASSaR-class fuses feature a high minimum interrupting current ascompared with their current rating. The primary time-current characteristic of aR-class fuses is the CC'curve, abovewhich another protection device must be associated. The gR-class fuse represents considerably improved performance insemiconductor protection.

The company was founded by Jarker Gorander (Swedishdescent) in 1963, concentrating on the design andmanufacture of electronic test equipment. Over thefollowing years the business also expanded into audioconnecting leads and a wide range of servicing aids. In1980 a decision was made to concentrate on the marketingof circuit protection devices namely fuses. Since then thecompany has made a strong and continuous progress inwidening this range of products and today carries thelargest stock range in Australia, if not the world.
