Having operated an ecologically focused design construction practice specializing in interiors and furniture, I both recognize a disparity between the built and natural environments and have faith in the potential for resolution by design. Because my design and construction practice offers services that are comprehensive in scope and tailored to a specific client, frequent project specific innovations are expected. In addition to the addressing the routine challenges that inherently face a design construction project in the field, working corroboratively on projects with open parameters has provided the bridge for projects that aim to integrate social and environmental issues.
The Windfall, Ladder and Recovery Projects illustrate specific tectonic approaches to furniture design that also inform my work with interiors. These explorations are driven by the availability of an under-utilized cache of materials potentially equal in quantity to the wildly escalating volumes of waste produced by inadequate disposal infrastructures. Being a primary precept in my design facilitations, the expression of responsible material use is in relationship to reproducible tectonic systems that reinforce links back to their origin.
As receptivity to collaboration is primary to the design development process of much of work shown in this portfolio. I share authorship with those who made valuable contributions to each project. By intention, all drawings and photographs were selected to reflect my full accountability as primary designer, facilitator and fabricator from conception to documentation.

WLODARKIEWICZ RENOVATION / TOPANGA, CALIFORNIA / 2005
A wide operable widow with sidelights, french and tri-fold doors were introduced into this
kitchen to establish a stronger relationship with the outdoors. All built-ins including door and
window casings and were cut from the same lot of Jatoba, a lesser known species of wood at
the time of construction. Refrigeration is integrated into the split level stairwell.

WLODARKIEWICZ RENOVATION / TOPANGA, CALIFORNIA / 2005
A built-in bed platform is integrated into the entry stair of the basement
bedroom shown in the photograph above and the plan drawing on the right. In
addition, the open bathroom is adjoined to a walk-in closet / laundry room by a
pass-through cabinet system that utilizes bidirectional cabinets and drawers.

BON ADDITION / TOPANGA, CALIFORNIA / 2003
Originally inspired by a visit to Samuel Mockbee’s Rural Studio in Alabama and examples
of homespun vernacular architecture in the local Topangan community, this addition serves
as a pair of sleeping berths for two children. Looking out to large Oak tree crowns from the
re-purposed factory windows evokes a feeling of being in a tree house. Due to evidence of
slippage in the home, the addition also functions as an anchor against a shear slope.

ROSSI KITCHEN / BERKELEY, CA / 2011
The kitchen installed in this Julia Morgan designed
home was an exercise in economy and professional
sensitivity. Being historically relevant, interventions were
exercised with care and on a limited budget. Four new
operable windows are introduced into the northern
elevation to tap light in a shaded canyon setting.

HAND HELD OBJECTS / SANTA MONICA MOMA EXHIBITION / 2003
Featuring the sculptures of artist and Annenberg Foundation Director Lauren Bon.
This exhibition mediated between the artist desiring an applied tactile experience,
and the liability concerns of the curator. The resolution involved positioning both
the museum pieces and users low to the ground on soft material.

MOREHART LIBRARY / TOORMORE, IRELAND / 2007
The cabinet type of the Library shown, accommodates a small space
slated for introspection and refuge from Irish gales and is a component
of a larger renovation involving three structures on a coast-line peninsula.
The primary concern here was to evoke the rich history of the site. The
primitive tectonics of the tilt-down kindling drawers reference the bucolic
life-style of the surroundings.

LADDER PROJECT
Trim laminated structural members are used here to
develop tectonic systems for the construction of light-weight
and flexible furniture assemblies.
The concept drawing detail shown on page 23, was
presented to a carbon fiber manufacturer as part of a
feasibility study on the behavior of carbon fiber to wood
veneer laminates in autoclaves.

RECOVERY FURNITURE
This projects develops reproducible tectonic systems for the use of salvaged materials and
construction overstock in various furniture applications. For instance, a wide variety of uses for
salvaged conveyor belt have explored by creating a wrapped plywood/conveyor belt laminate that
produces a clean round edge and makes for quick assembly.

WINDFALL PROJECT
This project explores methods for featuring the characteristics of naturally fallen trees. Inclusions, rough
edges, knots and the like are typically considered by-product by the wood milling industry. Incorporating
these into a common domestic setting has the potential to both reduce waste by establishing value in
overlooked material characteristics and provide a window to the natural environment.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY STUDY / PRESCOTT, ARIZONA / 2011
Located in the Prescott Arizona suburbs, this multifamily housing study was compiled for Habitat
for Humanity on behalf of the Ecosa Institute as part of a certificate program in regenerative
design. After an extensive social and environmental site study, a six unit, two-bedroom complex
was presented by three students including myself. Steps were taken to keep temperature
control off the grid. Gardens fed by grey and rainwater, are positioned near breezeways to direct
evaporative cooling into the homes during the hot Arizona summer months.
