Get Your Hands Dirty Community gardens provide residents with fresh and nutritious food while also creating economic self-sufficiency, health and nutritional benefits, and community spirit. Two students in the Environmental Studies Department at Albright College learned about managing the Albright Community Garden last summer thanks to a $4,000 grant that covered their stipend. Created in 2012, the garden teaches students how to produce food using sustainable techniques that aren’t harmful to the environment. During the internship, students handled the garden’s design and maintenance, and worked with the community to harvest and sell the produce.

The grant was awarded from the Hawley and Myrtle Quier Fund, which was established to improve the quality of life for the residents of Berks County, with particular emphasis on the arts, education, women’s issues, children’s issues and animal welfare.

Thanks to the grant, Albright College students gained real-world experience working with the environment, and learned leadership and management skills.

Protect Our Community Berks County has several K9 units that assist with law enforcement. These brave dogs work side-by-side with officers on drug, bomb, weapon detection and cadaver searches. The Darrell and Gloria Rank K9 Corps Fund supports Berks County K9 units by providing grants to acquire, train and maintain the dogs. Created in 2012 through Mrs. Rank’s will, the fund honors her late husband’s heroism. In 2013, the Berks County Sheriff’s Department received a $10,350 grant to support the design and construction of a state-of-the-art K9 training facility near the Berks County Prison. The new facility is available to all law enforcement K9 teams in Berks County. Thanks to the generosity of the Ranks, our local K9 units now have a top-notch place to receive the training they need to better protect our community.

Anyone can start a named charitable fund at Berks County Community Foundation with a minimum donation of $50,000. Each year, grants or scholarships from the fund will be distributed as you instruct by the Community Foundation in the fund’s name. Many people choose to create a charitable fund by bequest by adding language to their will, or naming the Community Foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement account. Others enjoy seeing the benefits of their philanthropy while they’re still alive.

To learn more, contact the Community Foundation at 610.685.2223 or via email at [email protected]. We’re happy to meet with you to discuss your charitable objectives.

To determine the method, or mix of methods, that make the most sense for structuring a gift through Berks County Community Foundation, this information should be reviewed by a competent financial, tax or estate planner.
