We think family history charts help you share your family history, honor those that came before you and inspire future generations. However, depending on where you are in your research, you may or may not be ready to share what you have found and reach out to inspire your family members.
Therefore we print two kinds of charts. • Working charts are inex-pensive simple printouts of the research you have collected so far so that you can write on it and add more information to continue your research. • Decorative charts are for the family historian who is ready to share and show off their amazing heritage.

Working ChartsIf you are not ready for a finalized custom chart, you may just need something that will show you the data you’ve collected and what more there is to do.
With our Working Chart option, we can print a simple ancestor pedigree, or a descendancy chart. We can print in either a left to right orientation, top to bottom orientation, or a circle. We print the chart as it comes out of the data—with no editing, no title, no border, no decorative features. These charts are printed on 20 lb. standard bond paper, with non-archival ink and paper. This type of chart is priced by the foot, so pricing depends on how big your family plots out. You can see various options and sample pricing at https://familychartmasters.com/php/workingcharts.php but if you don't see what you are looking for there, just let us know. We have lots of options for working charts.
You can submit your information for a working chart with our free consultation service—the same way you submit it for a custom chart at http://www.familychartmasters.com/consult (or under the “Start Here” button on the website). Details can be found in the “Step 3” section of this booklet.
Most people don’t realize the span of a family and how quickly it grows. The largest generation determines the size of most charts. Your 20th generation of ancestors has over ½ million (524,288) people in it. Each generation doubles, so your 21st generation has over a million people in it. A family in the 1800s who had 10 children can have well over 10,000 descendants now. We are happy to help you determine size and price options for a working chart through our free consultation service.
In order to keep your working chart inexpensive (since you are still working on the research), we do not provide online previews for these types of charts. Online previews are only available for custom charts. 8
Decorative ChartsWith our Decorative Chart option we can design any size or style of chart you want. We can create a pedigree, bowtie, hourglass, etc. We can also include both ancestors and descendants on a chart. We will add a title, border, background, pictures, or other

decorative elements. When we receive your genealogy informa-tion, we'll create a mock-up based on your suggestions and thensend you a link in an email so that you can view the chart and see if there are any adjustments that need to be made. We'll work back and forth with your suggestions and new mock-ups to make sure everything is perfect before we print—all included in the original price. We're confident we can come up with something you will love--otherwise we keep working with you until we do.

We generally create decorative charts for typical frame sizes so that they are easy to find frames for. The pricing depends on the size of the chart and the paper choice. Step 1 Gather Your Family’s InformationA typical chart contains names, birth, marriage and death dates and places. But we can add anything you want to your chart.
Who to include:Ancestors. descendants, siblings and their families, in-laws and their ancestors and descendants, divorces, adoptive families, blended-families, everyone in the file, collapsing lines, even pets.
What to include?Typical birth, marriage and death dates and places give a chrono-logical and geographical frame of reference. You can add spaces to fill in missing information, family quotes and titles, health issues or genetics, donated organs between family members, stories (how the couples met!), pictures, immigration (Mayflower, pioneer, first-families), ethnicity, languages, talents, religions, accomplish-ments and offices, quotes, maps, flags, military service, docu-ments, current address, age, physical attributes, character attri-butes, religious events (baptism, bar-mitzvah, offices held), crimi-nal records, royal lineage, education, occupations, nicknames, heritage and culture, personality, citizenship, shareholder and inheritance information, telephone numbers and social networking addresses, even qr codes or addresses for family websites.

You can collect the informa-tion in an offline (only on your computer) genealogy software program such as:
•RootsMagic (the free version at www.rootsmagic.com works great for a chart),•Legacy Family Tree (also has a free version at legacyfamilytree.com),•Family Tree Maker,
or any other genealogy software program.
Or you could collect it in an online genealogy database such as:
•Ancestry, •FamilySearch •MyHeritageor other databases.

If you have collected your family’s information but have not entered it in a computer program or website, we can do that for you. Just send it to us online, or even through the mail and we’ll can enter it into a genealogy program. Before we start, we’ll give you an estimate on how long it will take and what the cost will be. Data Entry is $25 an hour. Once we have all of the data in a genealogy program, we can look at the way your family plots out.
Please be aware that the online databases will only let you see (and thus download) living people who you yourself have entered into the database.
Assembling your information (Planting Your Family Tree)
You’ll need to choose a place to collect the information you find about your family. Once the information is collected into a digital genealogy format, you can send it to us to create your chart.

Adding pictures/images/documents to your chart.
Sometimes the items you want to add to your chart don’t fit into a genealogy database. If you are sending us a GEDcom file (downloaded from an online database), the photos are not included in the GEDcom file. RootsMagic, Legacy and other offline data-bases also store the images separately from the file. Only Family Tree Maker stores photos with the genealogy data. So, if your information is collected in any location other than the Family Tree Maker software, you will need to send us the photos you want on your chart separately from the genealogy data file. You are welcome to send us each image individually, however the easiest way to get pictures to us is to zip them together using your windows file manager on your computer.
Here are instructions, step by step, for creating a zip file containing the pictures for your chart:
1)Open the folder where the pictures are located and highlight all of the picture files you want to include. (Use the ctrl button to select more than one.)2)Right click your mouse and select "Send to"Select "compressed (zip)" file. The computer may ask you what name you want for the zip file, or it may create a name for you.3)All of your pictures are now in one "zip" file. The file should be in the same location and will end with the extention .zip.
Your pictures do not have to be sent to us in a zip file, it is just the most convenient way to send them.

When creating a chart, you will want to evaluate the purpose of the chart, who it is created for, and how it will be used. A “working” family history chart (as we discussed in the introduction) can be printed to collect information at a family reunion and has plenty of space to add information and prompts for which information needs

Bowtie or butter-fly, hourglass, water-fall, all-in-one, extended family, free-form, branches, or waterfall charts can be produced by combining different formats to display all of the family relation-ships.

A “decorative” chart intended for long term display to inspire non-genealogists should contain lots of captivating information, docu-ments and pictures and will need to be printed on archival paper so it will last for generations.
Basic Chart Formats
Typically, a non-genealogist thinks of their family history in certain directions. Most people think of descendancy as going from the top (the ancestors) to the bottom (the descendants) And typically, people think of ancestry as going from the bottom (the current gen-eration) to the top (the ancestors). Often, ancestors are thought of as moving from the left to the right as well. But family relationships can be plotted out in any direction. Some may think of ancestors as the roots and the current generation as the branches of the tree. Or visa versa. It all depends on how you envision your family.

A waterfall descendant chart starts with the ancestor on top and goes down a couple of generations like a top to bottom descendant chart. Then it switches showing each family and their descendants in a vertical format with each generation indented from their parents.
Ancestor and Descendant lines can be wrapped around to fit a chart to a particular size. Color coding can help with making the chart understandable.

When determining the size of the chart and the number of generations/people that can fit on the chart, there is a triangle between the size of the chart, the number of generations you are trying to fit in, and the size of the paper. It comes down to basic geometry. If you want to stay with a
smaller size paper and fit more generations in, you may have to go with a smaller font. Likewise, if you want to go with a larger font and fit more generations in you may need to go with a larger piece of paper. Or if you need to keep it to a smaller piece of paper and don’t mind a smaller font, we can fit more people into your chart. We can help you with all of these options once we receive your information.
Sometimes the layout of a chart can be adjusted to fit more people into a smaller size of paper. One of the ways we can do that is by adjusting between a top to bottom and a left to right chart.
The size of the chart is determined by the largest generation on the chart. With a top to bottom chart, that size is determined by the width of each person’s information.

In a top to bottom chart (bottom left), the width of each person’s information has to be a certain width in order to accomodate long names and places. So a top to bottom chart is typically larger.
However in a left to right format, each person’s information can be kept to a smaller size since the width of the information can be adjusted to show all of the details and the long names and places. So a left to right format typically fits more people into a smaller space because each person in the largest generation takes up less space. Usually a left to right chart takes up about 1/3 of the space of a top to bottom chart.

Circle Chart
Circle Charts
A typical circle chart (or a portion of a circle such as a fan) shows ancestors from a starting person. We can start it with one person, or we can add a spouse or all of the siblings in a family as the start-ing point. We can do an ancestor circle chart with names and dates, and we can also add the places. However, when you add places, things start to get tight so we give you two choices. First, we can abbreviate the places to fit in the boxes, with more informa-tion in the larger boxes towards the center of the circle and less information as the boxes get smaller on the outside of the circle. Or second, we can give you the full place name but shrink the font according to the amount of information on each person. This second choice creates inconsistent font sizes throughout the chart depending on how long the place name for each person is.
We an also do a Descendancy circle chart, but those are generally not what one would expect. This chart starts with an ancestor in the center of the chart and then each concentric ring shows another gen-eration of their descen-dants. This chart is tricky because when there is a child who doesn't have any children, the rest of the "slice" of their chart remains blank and is shrunk in respect to the other descendants. 24

Circle charts are a good way to show alot of information in a small place, but that small space does provide some constraints to what can be displayed. We can generally show up to 12 or 13 genera-tions in a circle chart, although we usually recommend staying to 10 generations or less to maintain readability.
Typically we can fit up to 9 generations in a 24x36 size with a fan chart. Nine generations will fit in a 36x36 circle and 12 generations will fit in a 42x42 circle. However, as with the triangle mentioned before, more generations will fit if you are willing to go with a smaller font size.

All-in-one Charts
When we have a request for a chart showing all of the individuals in the file, and the file has alot of in-laws, ancestors of in-laws, step families, and extended cousins etc., we have three options we can print. As always, we are happy to make adjustments on the size of the font or which information shows on the chart.
The first option is to use Family Tree Maker software and print an extended family chart. This is usually a descendancy type chart with anyone who doesn't fit into the regular descendancy format (in-laws, step families and such) shown off to the right of the chart. These charts are typically very short and very wide.
As a second option, we can give you some choices that will show most (not all) of the people in your file with a descendancy or ances-tor chart or a combination of a couple of charts. These types of charts typically leave plenty of room to add more information so step-families and extended cousins can be added by hand.
Both of these options can be printed as working charts without the online preview so that costs can be kept low. Any ideas you can give us about the structure of the research helps us to determine the best layout that will include the most people from your file.
Family Tree Maker All-in-one Chart

The third option would be to take all of the people you want on the chart, manipulate it around, and create a custom decorative chart for you. On this chart, we make sure everyone is connected and it is a little easier to understand than the Family Tree Maker chart. We usually aren’t sure of the exact size until we start work on the chart, but we can give you an estimate when we receive your information. We can place a title on the chart and decorative border, and add pictures or a background, if you want it. We will also create an on-line preview so you can approve the chart before it is printed. The pricing for this type of chart is dependent upon the paper you choose and we will keep you informed of that as we go. If you choose this option, as with all of our decorative charts, we are happy to work back and forth with you until it is perfect--all included in the price.
Color coding is especially helpful on all-in-one charts to be able to show family groups or generations and make the chart easier for the viewer to follow.

Step 4 Approve Your ChartIf you are looking for a simple ancestor pedigree, or a descendant chart to use as a working draft copy, you can simply choose one of the size options we send you and place your order. If you are look-ing for a decorative chart to hang on the wall we want to make sure everything is perfect. We will email you a link to a preview and you are welcome to send us any changes you need. Decorative chart pricing includes any edits, additions or changes needed to create the perfect chart for your family. We love making you happy.
For your preview, we will send you a full size version of your chart so that you can see how big everything is and check the informa-tion. You will need to scroll around to see everything. You can probably use [ctrl +] and [ctrl -] to scroll in and out. If you have any trouble with the link, you could try cutting and pasting it into your browser address bar.
When you receive your preview, please check the information carefully. We don't know your family as well as you do and we want to make sure it is perfect before we print. We are happy to work back and forth with you to get the chart exactly the way you want it. Just send us an email and tell us if any information needs to be corrected, if an image needs to be moved or lightened, or if any-thing else needs to be done.
If you find any changes needed after final approval and printing, we would be happy to edit and reprint for the 50% off copy price and shipping. Depending on the number of changes you need, there may be an extra design charge included at that point. We’re happy to keep working on it until it is perfect before we print, but we’re also happy to fix things if you find errors after it is printed. 42
Step 5 Place Your OrderOnce you’re happy with your chart, you can submit shipping and payment information. We’ll print the chart and send it right out to you. Pricing depends on the size and the type of paper. (These prices are subject to change)

As we said before, with all of the charts we design, additional copies of the exact chart are 1/2 price. Orders of 10 or more charts also receive 10% off the entire order and orders of 20 or more receive 20% off the entire order.
Our regular shipping is USPS Priority Mail and it typically takes 2-3 days in the United States. We have options for Express Mail (1-2 days) and we can overnight a chart for $145. We’re also happy to ship directly to your family gathering. Please contact us for details and prices for international shipping.
For decorative charts, our six paper choices include:
•24lb. Presentation paper that is archival, bright white, UV coated and printed with pigment inks.
•36lb. Professional paper that is archival, bright white, UV coated and printed with pigment inks.
•60lb. Parchment paper with a marbled color that is printed with pigment inks.
•Outdoor Vinyl plastic that is printed with pigment inks.
•Artist’s grade Matte Canvas used for fine art printing which has a slight texture, is bright white and UV coated and is printed with pigment inks. Canvas is usually stretched on stretcher bars like a piece of art which can be hung simply stretched or framed. Canvas is usually not framed under glass.
