This collection is a tribute and a merging of two of my greatestpassions: Sport and Fashion. It will draw its inspiration from both the courts, rinks, and fields of play and the runways of Europe andbeyond. Drawing on colour inspiration from the kits and uniforms of the various teams and taking inspirsation for shape from thier jerseysas well as from the runway allows for the collection to take shape. The fabrics are a combination, beginning with wools and combining the natural fibres with synthetics such as neoprene and faux fur. The collec-tion is then topped off by adding couture hand embroideredpanels to some of the pieces to add a missing element.

The research for this collection began in August 2015 as I watched one of the opening Manchester United matches of the season. I thought too my-self this is one of my greatest passions and then I realized that if I combine the two andmerge sport with high fashion that the results could be endless. Initially as I am from Canada I focused on Ice Hockey and the gear worn to protect the players, and how those shapes would translate to gar-ments. Once, I arrived back a Istituto Marangoni, my tutors, although liking my initial concept pointed out that it might be to nar-row and that I should expand myresearch. Over the next two semesters I added and subtracted many different ideas and con-cepts into and out of this project. The other item that was agreed upon fairly early was that since my shapes and designs were very basic and lack-

ing in manipulations, that there was an element that needed to be added to the collection. It was decided that hand done couture embroidery was the way to go. Once this was decided on I dove even deeper into my research on fabrics and em-broidery. This was simultaneous to the research and at this point more development of my actual garments. By the time the collection was ready to submit it had transfromed into a collection that was inspired by over-sized Ice hockey sweaters, basketball jerseys, Football kits, high fashion, and couture embroidery

The fabrics for this collec-tion come from threedifferent areas of inspira-tion, each different from the next and when fused together form a fun and unique fabric selection. The fabrics are a com-bination of natural and synthetics, that are not normally seen together.Firstly, the faux fur’s that feature heavily in thiscollection are so very simillar to the furs that are found on so many of the sports teams mascots. The wools that are used pay homage to the fabrics that were used in jersey’s and kits of the past era’s

of sport. Finally the neoprene is used as a nod towards the future and where fashion and textile developments may be taking us.

The colour palette for this collection, draws its inspiration from the kits and uniforms of various professional sports teams from around the world; as well as from the balls and other items used to play the actual games. The fact that both Black and White feature heavily in thiscollection is very much due to the fact that almost every sports team in the world has either one or both of these colours used for the their uniforms. It is also a nod to the fact that these are the coloursusually worn by referees and officals. The two other

colours that feature in this collection come from two very distinct paths the or-ange comes from the third kit of Manchester United and the blue comes from the trim on the Minnesota Timberwolves jersey.

This is a sample of the embroidery that was selected and ultimatley used in my graduate collection. The ribbon work on the embroidery consists of two differ-ent styles, one, the black ribbed ribbon is folded on 45 degree angles to create a triangle pattern; secondly, the silk-satin ribbon, which appears in both blue and orange is folded back on itself to create a looping snake effect. The beadwork features two distinct types of beads, one a diamante crystal style bead and the other a

smaller smooth round bead. All of the elements, the ribbon and beads were sewn on by hand and sit on a base of neoprene fabric

The sketches and designs shown here are a selection of some of the inital concepts that I came up with for the collection as well as a group of inital drawings of outfits that actually became pieces in the final collec-tion. As explained before they all take there inspiration and shape from the sporting world in some way, be it shape, style lines, or the big number panels, all was borrowed from the sporting world.

The Illustration work is a culmination of all of the aspects above coming together and putting the vision that I had in my head on to paper or a computer. This shows how the colours, the fabrics, the embroideries, all work together with the shapes; and how they portray both the high fashion concepts and the sport influences that I wanted to achieve in this collection. The style of these illustrations was achieved by converting my hand drawings into bitmap and then using the lines and dots to create a sort of watercoloring book, look to the illustrations.

Country Festival

This collection was a tribute to my roots and the culture of my town and area of Canada. Being from western Canada I chose to make this collection a fusion of traditional western wear and music festivals. The colours are a combination of neutrals like beige and brown and bright explosive colours like yellows and pink, taking inspiration from the fields and animals, as well as from the bright colours from festivals. The fabrics were a combination of natural fibres and leather.

Research And Development

24

The research and development for this project started when I decided that I wanted to do a collection in tribute to my roots and where I come from. Being from western Canada and living in the country the natural answer was to do a collection based off of traditional western wear. The idea to add the music festival angle to the collection came once I began consulting on the collection with my tutors and they suggested adding another element to project to make it a little more diverse and exciting. From this I began looking at what

the cowboys wear during the rodeos, as well as the actual animals. At the same time I was also looking at all sorts of music festivals, from Coachella to the country festivals like Big Valley Jamboree. By the time I had finished the research the start point for the collection was something that I was very excited about.

Western Festivals

Colour Chart

The colour palette for this collection is derived from the natural co-lours that can be found in western Canada, the browns, beiges all take their inspiration from the hay fields and horses that dominate the landscape. The oth-er half of the colour palette that provides contrast to the neutrals is the bright pinks,

oranges, and yellows. They represent the music festival side of the research and pro-vide a nice contrast.

The fabrics for this col-lection, like the colours, work on the basis of pro-vide contrast between two distinct styles. The natural fibre based fabrics that represent the western side of the project and the leathers and lace that represent the festival side of the project.

Aritzia Menswear

Brand Extension

Spring/Summer 2017

This is the Final project that we had to at school. For this project we were instructed to pick a Brand and create an extension for them of something that they currently were not offering and that we thought filled a void in the market. The brand that I chose was the Canadian company Aritzia and I de-cided to create a menswear line for them. The reason that i decided on this was that I saw a gap in the Canadian market for solid mid market options for the male 15-30 age group.

Research And Development

For the research into this project I started by looking at what Aritzia was current-ly doing for their womenswear, and identitfying their stlye and design ethos. Then I began looking at who the competitors would be (sandro, joseph, cos, whistles) and what they where doing with their menswear and what there style and identity was.Next, I created a range plan for what i needed for the collection, After I did this I looked at all of the pieces from Arizia and the competitors and I picked key pieces that were either present in all the collections or there were very close variations of the pieces and I used those silhouette as a springboard to launch my design process.
