The newly developed system includes stemmed precast panels, transverse grouted joints, longitudinal post- tensioning and welded threaded and h ead less studs. Th e purpose of the system is to provide a high quality bridge deck that can be built rapidly for new co nstruction or for rehabilitation. Rapid reconstruction time reduces the traffic disruption and annoyance that bridge users may encounter. Th e new system is s ho wn to h ave better crack control and to be 10 percent more slender and 20 percent lighter in weight than so li d conventional reinforced concrete decks. T he goal of this research project was to develop a precast, pre stre sse d concrete bridge deck for rapid construct ion. Rapid replacement of bridge decks is becoming increasingly important in high traffic a rea s due to public intolerance to extended bridge closures. A review of the literature'-' 8 and the results of a question- naire to bridge owners, designers, and contractors have revealed that prefabricated panel systems are advanta- geous in improving the quality and speed of bridge deck replacement. The large majority of highway bridges in the United States are of short to medium spa n wit h length s up to I 00 ft (30.5 m) . Mo st of th e deficiencies of existing bridges are attributable to sub sta ndard deck conditions. Deteriorated decks not only cause major traffic delay s and public annoyance , but al so result in a reduction of the bridge capacity. PCI JOURNAL
