High reliability
Scalability
ETERNUS4000 supports Max. 420 drives delivering up to 417 TB capacity. The number of host interfaces expands to a maximum of 16, with cache memory Max. 32 GB. State-of-the-art modular architecture combines Controller Modules (CM), Channel Adapters (CA), and Device Adapters (DA) to provide the high speed data transfer and mass scalability needed for large-scale storage consolidation.
High speed components
Model 600 uses a 2.83GHz quad-core processor and Model400 uses a 2.33GHz dual-core processor per controller. Drive interfaces support 4Gbps fibre channel, and host interfaces support Max. 8Gbps fibre channel interface. 4Gbps fibre channel drive and Max. 8Gbps fibre channel host interfaces provide highest possible throughput.
Multi-controllers
The number of internal storage controllers is 2. Redundant controllers with high speed processors means your storage system can handle very heavy transaction loads as well as ensure high reliability and data integrity, even if one controller fails.
Fibre Channel switch support
ETERNUS4000 uses 4Gbps fibre bus switches between controllers and individual disk drives. Their speed of operation provides the highest I/O transaction performance and removes data transition delays. This minimizes the effect of disk failures, and significantly improves the reliability of your system; over loop connection architecture.
Supports latest drive technology
ETERNUS4000 supports 300 GS (10,000 rpm) and 450 GB, 300 GB, 146 GB (15,000 rpm) FC disk drives with concurrent use of 1TB, 750 GB, 500 GB, (7,200 rpm) Nearline SATA disk drives for backup and data archiving.
In addition 146 GB, 73 GB Solid State Drives (SSD) which enable approximate-ly 16 times faster access1 and 40% less power consumption2 compared to traditional hard disk drives are supported.
Duplicate Fibre Channel interfaces mean high reliability and ability to mix different drives in the same enclosure.

High-reliability is fundamental to design
Key components including controllers, power supply units, fans, and batteries are all duplicated. In case of power failure, data in cache is automatically de-staged to a disk drive which is driven by an in-built battery. This provides you with long term data protection. If a controller fails, the remaining controller ensures operations continue without service interruption.
RAID6 support
RAID6 support is provided to enable you to have two parity disks in each RAID group. This means your data is secure even if two simultaneous disk drive failures occur. In addition RAID1, 1+0 and 5 are supported to provide a wide choice of options for your business.
Large-scale consolidation
Set up and managethe encrypted data
Multi-generation archiving with D2D backupin a single system
SATA disk drives (1 TB)
Data protection function enhance business continuity, compliance and security
Disaster recovery
Remote Advanced Copy function, an Advanced Copy enhancement, allows your data to be replicated between multiple ETERNUS storage systems with-out increasing the load on your servers. Both synchronous and asynchronous copying are available for data duplication. Data replication is possible between ETERNUS4000 systems and ETERNUS8000 systems, as well as between
multiple ETERNUS4000 systems. Both SAN-WAN-SAN connection using Fibre Channel interfaces and LAN-WAN-LAN connection using iSCSI are supported. IPsec (Security Architecture for Internet Protocol) is available with iSCSI to encrypt the data being transferred. This enables you to build your disaster recovery system environment using lower cost IP circuits.
Data encryption
ETERNUS4000 enables the storing of data in encrypted form using the 128 bit AES* method. This minimizes the risk to your business of illegal access, data theft and falsification of confidential information.
* AES: Advanced Encryption Standard, code for U.S. federal information processing standard
High speed back-up
Back-up during business operation
The combination of ETERNUS4000 Advanced Copy functions and ETERNUS SF AdvancedCopy Manager means you can replicate original data volumes without business interruption. Back-up processing is possible even while the system is operational as back-up to tape uses the replicated volume. Even if a fault occurs on the original volume, you can quickly recover the data from the replicated volume. In addition, it provides lower cost D2D (Disk to Disk) using Nearline SATA disk drives for replicated volumes.
A range of effective back-up functions
ETERNUS4000 provides you with the following copy functions.
OPC (One Point Copy)OPC copy functions let you create a duplicate copy of any data from the original at a time of your choosing, and provides a full duplicate of the original data. This suits multi-generation archiving a full backup of each generation is available.
QuickOPCInitially duplicates all the original data and then copies just those data items subsequently updated. This suits large scale data base systems which require a reduced back-up window. Only the updated data is copied after initial copy.
SnapOPCCopies the original data before it is updated. This suits file servers with relatively small data updates, as it uses less disk capacity than a full data copy.

Integrated management of storage environment
ETERNUS4000 supports Fibre Channel (Max. 8Gbps) and iSCSI as host interfaces. This means you can build very large and scalable SAN (Storage Area Network) configurations linked to SPARC Enterprise and PRIMEQUEST servers as well as other leading IA and UNIX server products. In addition, your data can be shared between multiple servers, resulting in bigger TCO reductions as less disk capacity is wasted. You can also achieve centralized system control and effective utilization of all system resources.
Storage management software ETERNUS SF Storage Cruiser provides centralized system control of SAN/DAS/NAS storage resources and enhances operation management efficiency. It shows you the status of the entire storage system and physical connections as an intuitive graphical interface. You are able to see the storage resource available by defining the relationships of each machine. You can also easily understand the relationships between resources. Straightforward,
parameter driven configuration allows automatic off-site or remote configuration. Problems on target machines are shown as console events, with the problem components and their impact clearly defined for rapid and accurate troubleshooting. Performance information on target storage devices and fibre channel switches can also be displayed and managed. When set thresholds are exceeded on a particular device you are notified so you can ensure stable operation continues.
Drastic reduction in both TCO and management costs from advanced operation support
Flexible operation management
Volume reconfiguration without business interruption
The RAID Migration facility enables dynamic migration of one logical volume to another RAID group, with no effect on business application operation. You can also reconfigure RAID levels (i.e. RAID5 to RAID1+0) as required. This effective and flexible system reconfiguration method, lets you prioritize user policy based on data volumes, numbers of transactions, or levels of reliability.
RAID group expansion without business interruption
You can also add disk drives and new LUNS without business interruption. Previously it was necessary to add a RAID group to add capacity. Now you can expand capacity matched to real capacity increases just by adding a disk at a time to an existing RAID group a disk at a time.
Volume capacity expansion without business interruption
Dynamic LUN expansion without business interruption is possible. Hot-expansion of other options such as drive enclosures, disk drives, controllers and channel adapters is also supported. Now you have the flexibility to perform all capacity expansion and performance enhancements without business interruption.
Disk drive capacity virtualization (Thin Provisioning)
Accurate virtualization of disk drive capacity supports This Provisioning. You create virtual logical volumes with capacity exceeding actual physical disk. Drives become a physical pool that is allocated automatically when servers write data. Use of disk space is more efficient as the physical pool is shared by several logical volumes. The setting of thresholds warns of physical disk pool shortages making disk addition easy. Thin Provisioning improves ROI by reducing the manpower needed for capacity design and operation management.
TCO reduction
Virtualization Switch ETERNUS VS900 in collaboration with ETERNUS SF Storage Cruiser, physical disk arrays can be used as one virtual storage. Storage virtualization allows you to allocate necessary volumes dynamically according to operational situation. This provides simple configuration system for users. Increase of storage usage rate and effective use of storage resources are realized.
ETERNUS4000 supports Eco-mode which applies MAID technology (disks rotate only when necessary). You can now spin down disk drives when they are not being used. This will reduce your power consumption. Eco-mode can be applied to specific RAID groups, and use can be scheduled based on backup operation times. Disk rotation stops when specified drives are not accessed
for a given period of time (adjustable). Stopped drives take less than 1 minute to reactivate for access. In the following example, reductions of 15% power consumption (total), 4,720kWh power consumption/year and 1,830kg CO2 emissions*, were possible.
* Comparison between constant use and 20 hours rotation stop per one day.
ETERNUS complies with European Union RoHS directives which restrict the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment: Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent chromium, PBB(Polybrominated biphenyls), PBDE (Polybrominated diphenyl ether).
ETERNUS4000 is a ‘Green Product’ which meets the strict conditions of resource saving, 3R design*, energy consumption, non-use of hazardous substances, materials and technology that contributes to environmental effect reduction and other environmental considerations.
