Fujitsu Laboratories was established in 1968 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fujitsu Limited. Since then, we have

engaged in developing technologies that contribute to the progress of society, economy and industry from a medium- to long-term perspective, without being affected by the short-term performance of the parent company, based on our founding philosophy to “develop the world’s top-level technologies to drive the growth of the Fujitsu Group in an autonomous and free atmosphere for researchers with a broad view for the ideal form of research and development.”

Today, in the midst of accelerated digitalization, the role of ICT in society and enterprises are expanding into various fields. Therefore, not only limited to business efficiency improvement, we also have to promote digital transformation, which is to create new added value and generate innovations through digital technology. Seeing the needs in dramatically changing society and in line with the business strategies of Fujitsu, which is aiming to be a “service-oriented company,” we would like to reconfigure our research portfolio dynamically and speedily, for solving our customers’ business issues and social challenges as well.

So far, we have pursued to realize a “technology value chain” that covers diverse technology fields ranging from materials and devices to computers, networks, software and services. From now on, in addition to these fields, we will also establish a “business value chain” by rapidly commercializing trailblazing technologies which we have developed ahead of other companies, in cooperation with Fujitsu’s business units. Accordingly, we are aiming to realize the “technology value chain” for expanding technological frontiers and “business value chain” for facilitating social implementation of technologies.

In 1976, Fujitsu posted a slogan “Reliability and Creativity” and ever since, has pursued the reliability by providing highly reliable products and services to customers, as well as creativity as a company.

Entering the digital era, we changed the phrase of “reliability” into “trust” to match the needs of digital era. In the digital era, companies, individuals, business activities, systems and data are interconnected unlimitedly, and there are a huge number of distributed elements that require trustworthiness such as quality, authenticity and eligibility, which makes it extremely difficult to control everything. For example, achieving sound business transactions between companies, or corporate compliance (observance of the laws and regulations) requires the “reliability” in ICT services and products concerning their functions or robustness, and at the same time, it requires “confidence” in the correctness of information and its proper handling. In the field of AI, which is recently attracting a lot of attention, there are many technological issues that must be overcome, such as a technology that explains the reasons and evidence of AI judgment, a technology for managing the history of data to prove the authenticity of learning data and a technology for preventing and detecting alterations to AI algorithms from outside. These issues must be resolved in order to guarantee the reliable use of AI for people. Fujitsu Laboratories is determined to contribute to realizing “Digital Trust,” which is a key element in the digital era through technologies.

Meanwhile, “creativity” is also undergoing a significant paradigm shift. This is because, in a society where all things are connected, many of the new values are born out of co-creation by various stakeholders. Through open innovation, excellent knowledge

Developing a Digital Society by Achieving “Digital Trust and Co-creation”

and ideas are collected around the world to investigate the current and future issues of the world, and a variety of business models and services are created for solving them by combining cutting-edge technologies and cross-industry know-how. We are convinced that our major mission is to develop digital technologies to accelerate co-creation and build a platform for co-creation and support the growth and prosperity of people, companies and society. We ourselves also intend to go beyond the conventional relationship with customers as a supplier of ICT products and services, for strengthening and expanding business through co-creation with customers based on our strong technologies for growing together with them.

Foreseeing the future trend and needs in the digital era, Fujitsu Laboratories has reviewed our former slogan

“Reliability and Creativity” and created a new one “Digital Trust and Co-creation.” To meet this major challenge, we are determined to further promote R&D for driving the growth of the Fujitsu Group.

Continuously developing the world’s top-class cutting-edge technologies for leading digital transformation by predicting the technology trend

We open up a new horizon for computing technology by presenting a groundbreaking paradigm and architecture for solving problems which are impossible to solve or given up solving with existing methods. In order to utilize explosively increasing amounts of data which are generated by various systems from cloud to edge systems in the 5G era, extremely high computing power is required. We can provide the best solutions to meet customer needs, by making the best use of Fujitsu’s technological strengths such as parallel processing, which was enhanced through supercomputer development, domain-specific accelerators, high-performance computing algorithm and network technologies. We are also engaged in developing completely new methods such as quantum computing.

Pursuing New-Generation Computing for Overcoming Performance Limitations

In the digital transformation era where all kinds of data is connected, in addition to preparing the measures against cyberattacks, we have to ensure privacy protection and trustworthiness of the data used for AI learning. Therefore, security is now a business challenge or serious operational issue for every company and organization. We will ensure trust in people, things and systems by focusing on a “security by design” development method for embedding appropriate security functions from designing phase of a system and developing technologies concerning cyber security, data security, identity authentication of people and organizations, and Blockchain.

Promoting Security by Design Focusing on Data Risk Prevention

Through AI democratization, AI has been rapidly penetrating into society both in business and our daily lives. We are aiming to realize AI that is really trustworthy in every aspect. We intend to establish the world-leading AI technologies to support autonomous machine learning for actualizing autonomous growth of AI, decision support using digital knowledge (a new type of knowledge), explainable AI for facilitating cooperation between people and AI, new quality management of AI that is highly data-dependent, and trusted AI that can solve compliance-related and ethical problems. Through these initiatives, we promote social implementation of AI in various fields.

Realizing AI that Can Be Trusted by Society

In order to use the increasingly distributed and complex digital systems stably in the future, we have to establish technologies for automatic development and autonomous operation of such systems. For operating systems responding to user situations and their changes, we need to develop functions to measure and analyze the user needs and system conditions precisely. Adding new quality evaluation indicators suitable for digital systems such as quality in use, besides conventional ones, we implement quality control functions tailored to each purpose of system users, and efficiently provide digital systems with optimal quality. We aim to realize a society where ICT systems support people and work with them, by developing digital systems that evolve optimally according to customer needs.
