All three were one component samples. RAM15-4 was ibuprofen, the common analgesic. However, this particular sample was a bit trickier in that it was an amalgam of the entire pill, coating and all. The coating on this pill was brown and flecks of it could be observed in the powder. These coatings can be made from lots of different things, including polymers. We tried to add mostly powder to our vial before putting it in the Raman. Half of participants identified this correctly. Our spectra was not very good, and the quality of matches was less than desirable.

Results for July 2015 RAMAN Proficiency Testing Event
Dear Participant:
In the July 2015 Raman challenge two unknown powders and one liquid were sent. All
three were one component samples. RAM15-4 was ibuprofen, the common analgesic.
However, this particular sample was a bit trickier in that it was an amalgam of the entire
pill, coating and all. The coating on this pill was brown and flecks of it could be observed
in the powder. These coatings can be made from lots of different things, including
polymers. We tried to add mostly powder to our vial before putting it in the Raman.
Half of participants identified this correctly. Our spectra was not very good, and the
quality of matches was less than desirable.

RAM15-5 was D-mannose, a sugar that is used extensively in the body. As
straightforward as this sample was, the spectra was not that great and the matches
weren’t very high quality. Sixty-seven percent of participants correctly identified this
sample.
RAM 15-6 was mineral oil, a clear, viscous liquid. Mineral oil has many, many uses and
different products. The sample didn’t have any apparent odor, and out of the three
samples it gave by far the best spectrum. Our Raman consistently returned Nujol as the
first match, and mineral oil as the third. All matches had high quality. The brand of
mineral oil for this sample was Sigma. Nujol is another brand of mineral oil made by
Plough, Inc.
