Director’s Thoughts By Renee Schell

Greetings and happy Fall! We have moved from the

warm, fun Summer filled with camping, baseball games,

and picnics to the crisp and colorful autumn season

which is full of football games, holidays and fellowship.

No matter what the season, we are always really busy in

the Clubhouse community. There is so much happen-

ing, I don’t have enough room to share it all. Here are a

few highlights:

We are really excited about the return of our 4 col-

leagues who represented Frontier House at the USA

National Clubhouse Conference in Washington D.C.

They attended several plenaries, workshops, and net-

worked with Clubhouse colleagues from around our

nation. This particular conference had the focus of ad-

vocacy, education, and development of our USA Club-

houses. Chris, Dori, Juanita, and Laurie came back

from the conference energized and with a plethora of

information. They will be sharing the highpoints of the

conference at the Standards review meetings this

month. We are already looking forward to next year’s

International Clubhouse conference!

This month will be the 4th month of our weekly Stand-

ards Review meetings. Standard #30 states, ‘The Club-

house conducts an objective evaluation of its effective-

ness, including Clubhouse International Accreditation.’

Besides the fact that it is good practice to study our

weekly Clubhouse standard, our Standard Review

meetings also give us a chance to discuss how closely we

comply with the standard of the week. This provides us

with an opportunity of evaluating the effectiveness of

the Clubhouse based on how well we are meeting the

standard. This is something we have

needed for quite some time, and I am

so excited that it was suggested and

implemented. The attendance has

been consistent at these meetings with an average of 15

colleagues. The meetings are held every Monday at

2pm. Please join us!

Speaking of standards, every two years the worldwide

Clubhouse community reviews these Standards, and

amends them as deemed necessary. The process is coor-

dinated by the Clubhouse International Standards Re-

view Committee, made up of members and staff of

Accredited Clubhouses from around the world.

Clubhouse International announced the addition of a

standard based on healthy lifestyles of our members.

Standard 28: The Clubhouse provides assistance,

activities and opportunities designed to help mem-

bers develop and maintain healthy lifestyles.

Our Clubhouse has valued the effort of promoting

healthier lifestyles of our members for quite some time.

This is evidenced by the adoption of a smoke-free prem-

ises, healthier options in our snack bar and lunch pro-

gram, and the awesome Wellness Center that is housed

in our basement. With the addition of this new stand-

ard, we can even look at more ways we can support our

members with living healthier.

A few months ago, we announced our plans to attend at

Clubhouse Colleague training at Independence Center

in St. Louis this fall. Unfortunately, we were a little too

late in applying for the November training. However,

we are now in the process of registering for a training

that will be held in March. I’ll keep you all posted on

our progress and plans.

I encourage everyone to take a moment and peruse the

updated Clubhouse International webpage. Take a spe-

cial look at the NEWS AND STORIES link. Frontier

House is featured in the Clubhouse Tours section! Very

exciting!

Frontier House values the new standard about helping members develop and

maintain healthy lifestyles. Join us every Monday at 4pm for ZUMBA with

Jayme, and every Wednesday at 4pm for ‘GOT SWEAT?’ in the Wellness Center

(pictured on left). Also, the Wellness Center is open during Clubhouse hours.

In addition to the above scheduled activities for the month, there are also very important standing daily

meetings. A great way to get involved in the Work Ordered Day of the Clubhouse is to attend these meetings.

Every morning at 9:00 am all Clubhouse Colleagues meet in the dining room for a morning meeting.

This meeting is a great opportunity for all Colleagues to greet one another before going to unit meetings at 9:15.

Dori ,Tawnie, Ashlynn, and Nick Hansen participated in event called Glimmer of Hope in

September. It was a wonderful event for suicide prevention, awareness and fundraising! We had fun

during the event and were able to provide information on Frontier House to the public! It was an

unforgettable night to remember those we have loved and lost through suicide. There was a 3k walk

and a night time balloon release.

A man get bit by a dog he went to a doctor. The doctor told the man he has rabies . The man starts writing

things down on paper. The doctor thinks the man is writing down his will. So the doctor ask the man why

are you writing down your will? The man said I'm not writing down my will. I am writing down the people

that I’m going to bite!

A man and his wife in the back country. One day a stray dog walked up. The man takes the dog to the

woods, and drops it off. When he came back home, the dog was waiting for him. He takes the dog to the

woods again and again and each time when he came back home the dog was waiting for him. So he takes the

dog again and criss crosses roads, he goes in circles, trying to get the dog lost. Then he drops the dog off in

the woods. An hour later he calls his wife at home and asks if the dog is there. The wife says that the dog is

there. He says put the dog on the phone and so the wife does. The man tells the dog “I am lost, I need

directions.”

Clerical Unit Update

The Clerical Unit held our annual retreat on Friday, September 30th. We had a great

turnout and were able to discuss the current state of the Unit. We were also able to

discuss new ideas and possible improvements for the way the Unit operates. The main

ideas we focused on were how Members currently perceive the Unit, what issues the Unit

currently has and how we can correct them, how to get Members in and engaged and the

process of reaching out to Members. We were also able to discuss the possibility of ex-

panding our Frontier House social media presence to include a Twitter account. During

the retreat, we discussed the importance of side by side work in the Unit. It was discussed

how side by side work is not only a staple of Clubhouse, but how it helps to engage Mem-

bers, it gives Members the opportunity to learn from one another and it makes the work

ordered day more fun! We also discussed revamping the task boards in the Clerical Unit to

make them easier to follow and understand. The Unit discussed how it could be useful to

create checklists for our daily tasks in the hopes that it might make certain jobs seem less

overwhelming. Please come in to see us in the Clerical Unit for more details on what we

discussed in the retreat and to share any ideas you might have!

The Kitchen Unit has been super busy the last two months. We have had some ups and downs. As

always we work together to achieve recovery. Our Kitchen Unit staff have been out of the Club-

house covering a few different TEP’s that have turned over. These are settling down and becoming

stable. Meanwhile our dishwasher needed to be repaired, so we got the opportunity to learn how to

use our 3 compartment sinks. This is a valuable skill as many restaurants use this system for cleaning

their dishes. We are working on revamping our snack bar procedures to make working in the snack

bar more meaningful. We are holding meetings to discuss results of our trials with new ways of

operating the snack bar. Everyone is invited to attend our next discussion meeting at 3 p.m. October

13. Our intern Heather has been by engaging colleagues in all aspects of our unit work. The Car-

tridges for Kids program has had more involvement, but we still need to be more timely about get-

ting the cartridges sorted. Under this program, Frontier House recycles empty ink cartridges from

other North Range offices and receives the funds earned. The Kitchen Unit has gained quite a few

members as our Clubhouse attendance has increased. All colleagues are welcome to work in our unit

whenever they want to see what we do.

Welcome Heather, Fall Intern

Heather Fillipponi is our new intern. She is a student at University of Northern

Colorado, Majoring in Human services. She is focusing on all types of rehabilitation

community physical therapy. Heather likes the range of opportunity Human Ser-

vices offers. She was born in Colorado Springs. She loves to read all kinds of fic-

tion, she is not picky. She also enjoys all kinds of music. A panel of Frontier House

members spoke to Heather’s psych rehab class it was the first time she has heard of

the clubhouse. “I think it is so smart to have members and staff work on the same

level” she said. Heather plans to be interning here until the first week in Decem-

ber.

Welcome to Frontier House, Heather!!!
