Hand-in date: 16th October 2015Expected duration of project: 2 weeks / 8 hoursUnit of study: Tourism – good or bad?Title: What attracts people to Mallorca? What problems do tourists cause?

Outcome of learning: Students will have learned about the growth of tourism over time in a variety of resorts; and how this can bring many benefits as well as conflicts with people who may have different views about tourism as an economic activity. To demonstrate their understanding of this topic, students are required to do the following:

Identify their own geographical questions Independently researched and evaluated information about tourism in Mallorca Use their own initiative in deciding how to present this information(ideally six or

more techniques) Use a variety of ICT skills (internet searches, DTP, graphs using spreadsheets) Extensive and correct use of geographical words to describe and explain

patterns found on graphs Recognise that human activities have unintended consequences and these

changes can lead to conflict (e.g. between tourists and locals) Consider how sustainable tourism can be applied to Mallorca. Reach substantiated conclusions (use facts and figures) Be able to evaluate their work and how it could be improved. The enquiry is organised in a logical sequence.

To help you achieve Level 7, it is important to show that you can think of your own geographical questions in your introduction, which can be used to help answer the aim of the project – that is, about the impact of tourism in Mallorca.

Try to think of up to 5 geographical questions which could be used to answer the main aim.

Hints: To make them geographical, you will need to include location or key terms

or both. You could use the ‘5Ws’ rule to help you decide. E.g.

Who ….What ….Where …Why …When …Example:What sustainable strategies could be used to manage tourism in Mallorca?

Individual work: What would Geographers expect to find? For each of your geographical questions, you will also get extra credit for describing and explaining your expectations for each of your questions – Don’t worry about getting it right (because this is what you will find out during the project); but Do make sure that you use key terms. To help you describe and explain these expectations, you can use Geographical Theory, which will help you achieve at least Level 7. Try to include the following Geographical theories in your writing about your expectations for your geographical questions:

Participation Rates The Butler Model The Positive Multiplier Effect The Negative Multiplier Effect Leakage

Look at your notes in your exercise book or ask your teacher if you are unsure.

Task 2 - Creating a map to show the island’s location. This should be completed on enquiry sheet 1 provided by your teacher.

a) Label Mallorca on the map of Europe.b) Use the colour laminated map of Mallorca to help you add the following

information to your map of Mallorca:

Print the names of Magaluf, Palma and El Arenal in the correct places. Carefully draw in the major roads. Carefully draw in the minor road from Magaluf along the west of the island

to the Bay of Alcudia. Mark on a cave, viewpoint and prehistoric sites. Show all the information in a key. Give both maps a suitable title.

Individual work: Make a fact file using the headings shown below. Add any other things that interest you.

Homework Complete a cover page for your project. This should include the following:

Your name Your form and your geography teachers name The title: ‘ Mallorca Enquiry’

It should be bright and colourful (you could add some pictures of your own).

Section 2 – Attractions: what attracts people to Mallorca

Task 1 – Brainstorm why people are attracted to MallorcaOn lined paper produce a spider diagram listing all the reasons why people like to go on holiday to Mallorca .

Task 2 – Producing labelled sketches of Mallorca’s attractions. You will need to use: the colour-laminated photos showing the North and the South of Mallorca enquiry sheet 2 provided by your teacher.

Task 4 – Producing a climate graph of Mallorca.1. Look at the climate data for London and Mallorca on enquiry sheet 3 provided by

your teacher.2. Use the data to draw a 2 climate graphs for each place.3. The graphs should be drawn on the same piece of graph paper so that they can be

compared. A graph frame (enquiry sheet 4) is available if you need help with setting out your graph.Remember:

Rainfall should be shown as bars and be shaded in blue. Temperature should be drawn as a line graph in red. All axes should be labelled. The graphs must contain a title. Cut them out and stick them on lined paper.

Task 5 – Writing about your climate graphs.Use the writing frame below to help you describe and explain what the graphs show.

Task 2 – Completing your evaluationEvaluation means being able to look at:

- What you did well?- What didn’t work out & why?; and most importantly, - What are you going to do differently next time?

In all subjects, to be able to evaluate is really important, if you are going to improve as a leaner and always achieve high marks.

To help you do this, you can complete a SWOT analysis – that is, for you to look at:

(S)trengths (what went well?)

It includes key words to help you write a paragraph about the progress you have made.

Individual work Look at the mind map on page 69 of Geography matters (3). It shows information

about the tourism industry in St. Lucia – an LEDC. Use it as a model to draw a similar mind map for Mallorca – MEDC. Try to expand your mind map to include ways in which tourism in Mallorca could
