Back in 1976, the first round of seven courses featured familiar topics we still find at Fromm today. History and Politics were there, as were Literature and Creative Writing. There was a course on libraries, and two courses from a renowned professor of science that tied human nature and the natural sciences together. Prof. Robert Clark taught “American Studies: The Interplay of Ideas, the People and Resources of a New Continent in the Making of the American Character and Nation.” Prof. George Gibson presented “Then & Now: A Comparison of the Last Century of the Roman Republic & The 20th Century.” Prof. George Sensabaugh looked at “The Values Systems in Paradise Lost” and Prof. Barth Marshall led her writers on a “Journey Into Self: A Workshop in Autobiographical Writing.” The Director of the Gleeson Library at the time, Dr. Robert Gitler, demonstrated “Libraries for Living & Learning” and Prof. Robert Thorton examined “Human Values: Human Nature, Its History and Management” and “The Natural Sciences, Humanities and Human Values.” Looking back, there may have been more words in those course titles than actual students enrolled for that first session. For those who count, there were 75 students. Moving forward, four decades later, our “fantastic fortieth fall” will feature courses that anchor on the presidential election, today and throughout our history, and others that take us to so many diverse topics that it just might be difficult for you to pick your choices. From the twenty-one you’ll encounter, you might need to flip a coin when it comes to Pucinni or Sondheim, myths and movies, the Bard/Brain or the Beats . The only non-dilemma will be the Medical Lectures that still remain open to all enrolled students once again as an extra offering. Starting right now, if you are an enrolled student here at the Fromm Institute you can make your choices for the Fall 2016 Session. All fees remain at the same level as last year — the educational bargain of the century. If you are sure of your choices, pick up an Earli- Enrollment Form, complete it and take it to the Fromm Office with your payment (cash, check, credit card). If you are unsure and want to wait until the Fall 2016 Course Catalog is released (on-line at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7 and to the U.S. Mail for delivery starting June 8) that’s just fine too. No one who submits an enrollment application by 3 p.m. on Friday, June 10 , gets a leg up on any one else. All enrollments submitted by that date/time will be processed randomly starting Monday, June 13. That’s usually about 1,000 of the 1,300 who’ll be on hand in September. So now it’s time to turn the page and plan for an academic future that will be here sooner than you know it. Questions? Ask any of the Fromm Staff. One of them is bound to have your answer. Check out our “fantastic fortieth fall” and make your plans to be here in Fromm Hall when the carillon chimes ten, during the second week in September. SIGN UP NOW OR LATER, IT’S YOUR CHOICEThe Fall 2016 Course Catalog will be on-line and on its way through the u.S. Mail on Tues., June 7, after 5

p.m. Fall Pre-Enrollment, that time when everybody has an equal chance of getting all their first choice classes, runs from Wed., June 8 through 3 p.m. Fri., June 10. If three months ahead of time seems early for classes that won’t begin until the week of September 12, remember that more than 1,000 people enroll during this Pre-Enrollment period!

For the really eager among enrolled students, (new students must wait to June 8 when they can review thefull Course Catalog) if you want to avoid sending an email or leaving your enrollment choices on our phone lineduring Pre-Enrollment, and you know the classes in which you’d like to enroll based on the newsletter publishedcourse titles and professors teaching them, you can pick up an Earli-Enroll Form in the Fromm Institute Officenow. Select your classes and leave a check or pay in-person by credit card for your membership fee or scholarshipcontribution. We’ll cash your check/process your credit card and keep your application, handling it right alongwith all the others received before 3 p.m. on Fri., June 10.

Written confirmation of your enrollment will be mailed after June 15. For those who get anxious about classes,or are travelling, enrolling early is a great way to get the task of your Fall Session registration out of the way. Asnoted above, your applications will be randomly processed with all the others received during the Pre-EnrollmentPeriod. There’s no preferential advantage to Earli-Enrollment, but you’ll have the piece of mind that you’ve takencare of business before this session ends, and that’s always worth quite a lot.SIGNING UP FOR SEMINARS . . .

Your confirmation letter will note that we have recorded your interest in the seminar (s) you have requested, but it will also say that we have not confirmed it. Seminar courses are enrolled by lottery in mid-August andconfirmed or denied shortly thereafter in writing. If you are signing up for a seminar, make an alternate choice. If you are not selected, you’ve got a space in your alternate course.

. . . AND EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIESThe Fromm Institute offers you the chance to participate in Extra Curricular Activities offered from 3 to 4 p.m.

during the session. If you are interested in any or all of them, wait to sign up for them during the first week ofclasses. Next Session the Institute plans to feature three: Faith Winthrop’s “The Joy of Singing;” Joan Minninger’s“Memory Lab—Names;” and Aarón Almendares-Berman “Spoken Spanish for Beginners.” Extra CurricularActivities are detailed in the Fall Course Catalog.

AND WHAT ABOUT PARKING? For those interested, there will be an application for an On-Campus Parking Permit included in your

confirmation of enrollment packet. The deadline for the return of these applications will be Wednesday, august17 and the check you must submit with your application will not be cashed until then. On-Campus parking isexpensive and is always limited at USF. That’s why we encourage you to share the ride and costs through carpools. Finally, remember that as we have done in the past our limited inventory of parking permits will consider DisabledDrivers first, then Carpools second in the distribution. If there are any left after that, the distance from campusdetermines who are the lucky few to get a Single Driver, non-disabled permit.

FOR YOUR CALENDARFall Classes will begin the week of Monday, September 12 and end the week of Thursday, nov. 3. “Make-Up”Week when classes cancelled by holiday or a faculty commitment/illness meet one more time will be Nov. 7through 10. Holidays during the Fall Session all in the fifth week of classes — Monday, Oct. 10 (Columbus Day)and Wednesday, Oct. 12 (Yom Kippur).

When considering your enrollment needs, remember that the Fromm institute office is closed throughout the month of July.

THE FROMMCAST“WHAT YOU’VE WANTED, WHEN YOU WANT IT”

Thanks to the educational technology of the Fromm Institute facility and the FrommInstitute’s desire to continue to offer greater access to our lifelong learning experience, there turns out to be a way to keep your Fromm Institute program with you all summerlong. It’s called the Frommcast.

The Frommcast, of course, is our recently launched digital platform where registered, on-line students canaccess educational content recorded at Fromm Hall by our faculty and shared via the web. For just $50 ($100for non-Fromm students) you can now enroll as a Summer on-line Member and get first time or continuingaccess to the ever-expanding Frommcast library of courses and lectures. It’s what you want, anytime youwant it. All you need are an up-to-date browser and a robust broadband as Fromm’s technical support foreach user is limited to general advice.

A complete list of the courses and lectures that are available (Frommcast Summer Membership lasts fromJune 1 to September 16) is now posted on Fromm’s website fromm.usfca.edu under Frommcast Library, orcan be found in a handsomely designed packet available in the Fromm Office or at the Welcome Booth. Youcan establish your membership for the Frommcast any time before June 17 for $50 ($100 if you don’t attendFromm Hall classes) by calling the Fromm Institute at 415-422-6805, or you can stop by with a completedFrommcast On-Line Registration Form. It’s easy, and just that simple.

Get ready to be a part of our first-ever Frommcast Summer Session. Sign up for a season of learning beforethe enrollment period for it ends on June 17. Join soon and be among the hundreds who’ll be taking the FrommInstitute with them wherever they have access to the Internet.

NOT ONE, BUT TWO HOLIDAYS COMING UPDon’t forget the upcoming two Fromm Institute holidays — one familiar, one not so. The “not so” isThursday, May 19. There will be no classes at Fromm that day to allow USF to get its GraduationWeekend underway. Then on Monday, May 30, there will be no classes in observation of MemorialDay. Please keep both in mind along with the fact that classes that are cancelled by these holidays orother faculty absence will be featured in our “Make-up” Week, June 6-9. All classes that will meet onemore time during this “extra” week of school, will be published in this newsletter the week of Tuesday, May 31.

CANCELLED CLASSESA special note to all who are enrolled in these two courses.

➢ Prof. Covert “Biographies of Exceptional Americans” will not meet his class on Wed., May 18, 1 p.m.➢ Prof. Jonas “21st Century Americans Across Borders” will not meet her class on Tues., May 31, 1 p.m.➢ Due to illness, Prof. David Fischer’s class “Role of Intelligence in U.S. Foreign Policy” will be cancelled

for the rest of the session.

Most classes cancelled by a faculty absence or holiday, meet during the Spring Session “Make-Up” weekon their same day of the week and time. A full list appears in the last newsletter out Tuesday, May 31.

ELECTION BY NOMINATIONHow wonderful and expedient that there were four nominations received for the four places on the FrommInstitute Student Association Steering Committee . . . and that all four were eligible to serve. In the FrommInstitute Student Association parlance, that’s called election by nomination! That means that for two more years, this advisory council to the elected officers will be: linda allan and david McClure (serving their last term in thiscapacity) and Cynthia Whitsell and linda Marks (serving their first elected term). The term of office for thenewly reconstituted Fromm Institute Student Association Steering Committee begins with the start of the Fall‘16 school year. Congratulations to all!

FROM THE PRESIDENT“The Year in review” by Lois Roach

As this Spring Session comes to a close, I look back at my first year as President of the FrommInstitute Student Association (FISA). Thanks to the voluntary $5 dues paid each session by Frommstudents, FISA has been able to engage two S.F. Conservancy of Music concerts per session foryour noontime enjoyment. Your FISA dues also provided a Holiday gift for each of the amazing

Fromm staff. With the addition of the Welcome Committee as adjunct members of the FISA Board, FISA becameinvolved with the afternoon “after class” activities (movies, etc.) at Fromm. It’s been a busy and entertainingyear for you and your Student Association leadership. Many thanks to my fellow FISA officers: (Shari Gropper- V.P., Eleanor Burke - Sec., Greg Brown - Treas,) your Steering Committee (Linda Allan, Herb Goodman, AllanJackman, David McClure) and to the adjunct Board members (Susan Kennelly, Bob Morgan, Frances Pinnock,Maxine Einhorn) for their time, effort and service on behalf of all Fromm students. Though our time in Frommclassrooms may be coming to an end until September, we now have a new way to keep the spirit of Frommwith us during the summer break . . . Frommcast! Whatever your plans are for the summer . . . be well, be safeand enjoy!

endeavors and thank her for her efforts on our behalf. The concerts will continue next year so that weexperience the joy of hearing these young musicians as they complete their studies and embark ontheir musical careers. She informs me that the weekend of September 16-18 will be the Conservatory’s“Classical Kickoff Weekend” and all their concerts will be free. Check out their website in August forall the listings and instructions. I will have the postcards when we come back to school, but their“Kickoff” will already be underway by then.

As I complete my 15th year as your volunteer Performing Arts Representative, I want to thank all of you foryour kind words for my efforts on your behalf and your appreciation for what I do — especially for the concertsand talks I arrange. Have a great summer filled with great performances wherever you will be traveling or athome. See you in September.

FROM THE WELCOME COMMITTEE “Matinee, Movies, Meet-up & More” by Maxine Einhorn & Frances PinnockAfter-class discussions continue this session focusing on Professor Zimmerman’s“To the Lighthouse/Sons & Lovers: Modernism in the 20th C. British Novel”literature class. We’ve already screened the Sons and lovers (1960) movie whichwas really well attended and look forward to discussing it after our Monday class.

(Inside Joke: we all got it that Paul really loved his mother!) The next film To the lighthouse will be screenedon Monday, May 23rd at 3 p.m. Examining movie adaptations of the novels is always fascinating and open tocontroversy, so all are welcomed whether or not you are in Professor Zimmerman’s course.

The Matinée film series is screening films related to Ruthe Stein's class – “Pacino & De Niro: Tale of TwoCareers” and we have already shown Falling in love (1984) and Frankie and Johnny (1991) so far, and lookingfor richard (1996) on Wednesday, May 18th. Always at 3 p.m. looking For richard will screened in the Bermanroom. Look for the flyers around Fromm Hall!

Do we potentially have the best and greatest Fromm Meet-Up yet? Try this idea on for size. Coming to youfrom the “Meet-Up” Board (in the atrium); our largest “Meet-Up” opportunity so far. Many of us took theamazing “History of Islam” class and have expressed interest in learning more. Many have visited mosques inplaces like Istanbul but have not been to actual Friday prayers (called Jumu'ah) in a local mosque. This is aboutto change as we have been invited to attend this regular Friday jumu'ah in a local mosque in San Francisco.Join us on Friday, June 17 at noon to attend a regular Friday Jumu’ah at the islamic Society and Mosque, alocal mosque, located at 20 Jones Street. We selected this mosque because the “service” is in English and menand women are not separated (the 8 foot wall separating men and women was taken down in 2006!) SinceJune falls in the month of ramadan, we have also been invited, by imam Khaled of the mosque, to join in thebreaking of the fast at 8:30 p.m. on June 17th. In this evening event we will have an opportunity to talk withthe Imam and eat with other members of the “congregation.” If you are interested, please leave your nameand email on the sign-up sheets at the Student Association desk in the Welcome Booth. One sign-up sheet willbe for the noon prayers, and the other for the evening meal. You can sign up for one or both. We will emailfurther details at a later date.

Finally, Come to Twilight! Celebrate the end of the semester by joining us for a drink at the TwilightCafé - 2600 McAllister St @ Stanyan. We’ll be your social hosts on either of two dates June 1 or June 2,3 to 4 p.m. All are welcome to stop by at the end of the school day for one, or the other, or both.
