Having just celebrated Pentecost the following view of the Holy Spirit in our lives from Trish Thomas is timely as our Pilgrims prepare for WYD13 and all of us prepare for the challenges of ‘Ordinary Time’ in our Church’s liturgical year; The Holy Spirit grounds us and calls us out of somewhere into everywhere, and keeps us moving toward and through the challenges of life, certain that on the other side of them is light, waiting and wishing us on. The Spirit of God is a wild thing, breathing where it will, moving as it pleases, and settling on all humanity and all creation. Receive the Holy Spirit' (John 20:22) receive what is already within you, in others and all creation, acknowledging the Spirit is at work in places we would never have expected. I hope and pray that our students are challenged at Aquinas and that their faith journey is one that holds them in good stead for those difficult times that challenge all of us in our lives. Congratulations to Jordan Holmes [Year 10] who has recently received terrific news regarding his football aspirations. Jordan is an outstanding goal keeper who has represented his school, club and association in a number of representative teams. He has accepted an offer from AFC Bournemouth in southern England for a fulltime player/ study scholarship commencing in June. Following FIFA approval, Jordan will be training and playing with the club who plays in the Championship division, the second tier in the English football league system. The club plays at the Goldsands Stadium in Kings Park, Boscombe, Bournemouth, Dorset and have been in existence since 1899. Whilst we will miss Jordan at Aquinas, and as custodian in our football teams, we wish him all the very best representing the ‘Cherries’ later in 2013 and beyond. I would like to make mention of the impending retirement of our long-serving groundsman, Mr Allen Baker. Allen has helped in all sorts of ways to help create a better learning environment from the very early days of the College. I would like to thank Allen for all of his hard work and enthusiasm for all things ‘Aquinian.’ We wish him all the best for a relaxing retirement. Finally, we have heard news of the recent hospitalisation of Fr Dennis Foley, the first parish priest of Holy Family and long time supporter of the establishment of what is now our College. I would ask for families to keep him in their prayers as we here at the College are doing. Fr Dennis had a particular devotion to Mary and in the Month of May, we have sought her intervention on behalf of Fr Dennis. James Corcoran Principal

Religious Education at Aquinas On Sunday June 2nd from 2.30pm over 5,000 Catholics will gather in the Sydney CBD for the annual Eucharistic Procession, Walk with Christ. It starts at St Patrick’s Church Hill and will travel through the streets of Sydney with prayer and Benediction at the St Mary’s Cathedral forecourt. Families are invited to join in this celebration. Please visit http://www.sydneycatholic.org/events/Eucharist13/ or contact me if you would like any further information. Over the coming weeks students will be invited to write a prayer of petition to contribute to a ‘Book of Life’ which will be carried during the procession and presented before the Blessed Sacrament at St Mary’s Cathedral. If families would like to contribute to this book of prayers, please submit a prayer of petition to the College office, to the attention of Mrs Nolan, via hardcopy or email. Year 7 to 10 students should have received their half yearly examination notification for Religious Education. Students will sit a 40 minute examination, based on the units that they have studied this year, during their examination period. Students should be preparing by revising their class work and textbook, as well as by participating in any revision activities that are occurring in their class. ‘‘We commit ourselves to the path of holiness, cultivating the many gifts of the Spirit and seeking to grow as disciples of Jesus.’

Year of Grace

Pastoral Letter

Reflection on the Gospel

In Sunday’s Gospel (John 20:19-23) Jesus stood among the disciples after his resurrection, speaking to them - ‘peace be with you’. Jesus commissioned them saying, ‘as the Father sent me, so am I sending you’, before breathing the Holy Spirit on them. Pentecost celebrates the power of the Holy Spirit coming upon the disciples and energising them to continue the work of Jesus. While the events of the first Pentecost are recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, this Gospel is one of the post resurrection appearances by Jesus where he breathed the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. For the weeks following Jesus’ death, the disciples lived in fear and confusion, not fully understanding what had happened and what to do. When they realised that the Spirit Jesus had breathed upon them was urging them into action at Pentecost, they finally had the courage to begin the mission that Jesus had entrusted to them.

Examination reminder Week 5 sees the beginning of the examination block for Years 7 & 9 and Week 6 for Years 8 & 10. Examinations form a compulsory part of our school assessment and students and parents are reminded that any appointments should be made outside of the exam periods. If a student is unwell during the exam block, the absence note should reflect that parents were aware their son/daughter missed an examination. In terms of preparation, students in Years 7 & 9 have examination timetables and notifications for all applicable subjects that outline the content and format of the examination. Students from Years 8 & 10 should receive this information this week, if they do not have it already. Year 7 students have recently worked through preparatory units from the Study Skills website during their pastoral periods and they have been encouraged to set up a personal profile. This is an activity that all students would benefit from as there are invaluable resources on the site, not only about how to study, but how to make effective study notes for various subjects. Students can access the study skills website through the school site. Our username: Aquinas Our password: 10success Year 10 students are reminded that, in the absence of a School Certificate, ALL Year 10 grades form the first formal part of their academic record and will appear on their ROSA (Record of Student Achievement). I am happy to support students who are struggling to organise their study timetable/preparation/notes. If this sounds like you and you have already visited the Study Skills website, you are welcome to pay me a visit either before school or during your lunch break.
