As we hear in the Gospel: “the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect!” In Advent we hear Jesus’ words: stay alert, stay awake, be prepared, be ready! These words suggest we are not alert, not awake, not prepared or ready. We hear anew the call of St Paul: “You know the time has come: you must wake now; our salvation is even nearer…” How shall we stay awake and prepare for the coming of Jesus this Advent? Let us carry the prayer of the early Church in our hearts, a prayer suited to Advent: Maranatha, Come Lord Jesus! (1 Corinthians 16:13-14, 22-24; Revelation 22.20; Didache of early church 10,6).
