An Update from the Vision Framing Team

Session Digest

a

As we journey to the Cross and to an empty tomb, a consistent theme are the words, “you are with me.” We journey in Lent, to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and ultimately to the empty tomb to see that God is with us in all seasons of our lives. To see that God is with us even when we, like the crowd, betray and rebuke him. We are invited to see that God is with us, even when we are in the depths of despair and lament and like Christ, we cry out, “my God, my God why have you forsaken me?” We see that God is with us when we are given new life and we proclaim, “He is Risen.”I want to continue to invite you to be a part of the journey. It could be through a small group, or through the worship services below.

In this edition of Bells, you will see the Spirit is moving in this church. Whether that is the Vision work that is being done or the new home communion initiative. It is an exciting time at Brownson and I can see that God is indeed alive and at work in our church. As we journey to the Cross, the psalms will encourage us to be honest with God and with ourselves. They give us the language to experience and name our human frailty and our need for a Savior. I pray that they will be a helpful guide in our journey to the Cross and to an empty tomb.

Tara Corbett’s request to become under the care of Session as she enters Duke Divinity School. An update from the Brownson Learning Center and a presentation from the Vision Framing Team outlining Brownson’s Mission Statement and our 6 Named Values. A great presentation was made by Congregational Care to begin a Home Communion Ministry Team for our members who are unable to attend worship and receive communion.

“I have read many intelligent and good books in my life. But I did not find anything in them that would have made my heart so quiet and glad, like the four words from that 23rd Psalm “you are with me.” —Immanuel Kant

May God bless you and keep you!

Last Summer, Kathy McPherson brought her grandson Thomas, who was visiting from Charlotte, to Vacation Bible School at Brownson. While here, he participated in a pen pal activity and was matched with his pen pal Shirley Robertson. The letter writing continued long after VBS was over. Last month, Thomas invited Shirley out for a “date” to see Brigadoon at Sandhills Community College. When he arrived in his tuxedo, he presented Shirley with a wrist corsage!penpals

Communion is shared during both services at Brownson on the first Sunday of each month. It is a meaningful experience for all who participate, bringing comfort and an opportunity to reinforce individual faith. Unfortunately, more than 80 of our members are unable to regularly attend worship services. They miss the opportunity to receive Communion with the congregation.

A leadership team of Jennifer Berk, Jeff Gilbert, Charles Harris, Steve Leggett and Mic MacCoy, supported by Karen Allen and Jane Maynard, is organizing a Home Communion Ministry Team.

Members of this Ministry will enjoy the opportunity to more fully live their calling as Christians and, as members of Brownson, be the body of Christ at work in the world. Brownson elders are being asked to volunteer for this Ministry. Doing so will provide an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of members who are unable to receive Communion during regular worship services. Team members will receive training between church services on either April 2 or April 23. This training will include spiritual discussion and “how to” components.

Communion will be offered to homebound members by teams of two or three elders on Sunday, May 7 during the 11:10 AM service. Team members will be encouraged to attend the 9:00 AM service that day. Prior to going out, they will have an orientation and liturgy review, and a commissioning prayer between services. Each team will have its own Communion Kit. Team members will receive the names and addresses of recipients in advance so they may confirm arrangements. Some of our homebound will receive Communion in their homes, while others will do so in a group setting in local facilities. Following the delivery of Communion, the Team will enjoy lunch in Fellowship Hall provided by the Meal Ministry and share experiences, make program adjustments, and enjoy fellowship.

The Team will deliver Communion following the same process again on Sunday, October 1 and twice a year in the future. All able elders are urged to volunteer for this important Ministry. The relatively small amount of time spent in this Ministry will provide considerable personal satisfaction while bringing great comfort and renewal to our members who would otherwise miss Communion.

Members of the Home Communion Ministry Team who have received or provided home Communion have all been moved by the comfort and hope it provides. Their faith, as a servant of Jesus, has been renewed.

If you are an elder who has not received a personal invitation to participate, please call Karen or Jane so you, too, can be a part of this meaningful Ministry.

P.S. On April 2, Session will consider approval of Stephen Ministers for participation on the Home Communion Ministry Team.

A New BeginningA small group gathering for those dealing with grief or loss will be held on Wednesdays, April 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 4-5 PM in the Parlor. This informal group, led by Karen Allen, will be a time of discussion, reflection and sharing. Whether your loss was recent, months, or a year ago; the group is open to all. For more information, please contact Karen Allen at the church office.

We will be taking Easter lilies to homebound members before Easter. If you would be willing to help deliver flowers, please contact Peggy Calhoun at 246-0436. If you or someone you know would appreciate an Easter lily, please contact Karen Allen at the church office. We are grateful to the Flower Ministry Team and other volunteers in our caring ministries who are helping with these deliveries!

Stephen Ministry is the one-on-one lay caring ministry that takes place in congregations that equip and empower lay caregivers—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting. The story provided by a care receiver illustrates the meaningful and spiritual relationship that develops within the Stephen Ministry congregation. Fourteen months ago, I was at a point where I needed someone to talk to about the struggles in my life. My pastor recommended I consider meeting with a Stephen Minister—another man, trained as a caregiver, who would walk with me during this difficult time. Trusting someone with personal information about my life was something I feared at first, but my pastor reassured me that everything was confidential, so I agreed to give it a try. I’m so glad I did! Soon after meeting my Stephen Minister, I quickly sensed I could trust him. Part of that trust came from knowing he was trained to help people through their problems. He made me feel comfortable by not prying for information, but instead just letting me share what was on my mind. I think another significant trust-building factor was being able to talk with someone who was not in my regular circle of friends. My friends certainly continued to have a very important place in my life, but I also needed someone who could see me objectively. That helped make it easier to share personal parts of my life. That genuine acceptance spoke to me the most; not to accept failure, but to confess, turn, and receive forgiveness. Having someone assure me of that biblical truth was really encouraging and was exactly what I needed. My Stephen Minister walked with me through a very dark part of my life, pointing me to the truth and love that is in Christ. I thank the Lord for my Stephen Minister who did not try to solve all my problems but lovingly, as a Christian brother, walked along with me through this valley in my life. If you are dealing with some type of crisis or difficulty in life, I encourage you to meet with a Stephen Minister. You won’t regret it! Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church invites you to share in this fulfilling ministry of providing and receiving Christ-centered care as we have been a “Stephen Ministry Church” since 1984.

www.brownsonchurch.org Page 5

Our Featured Circle this Month is Circle 7Led by Cathy Coats Harpster.

She writes that this circle has almost 20 members and is the only evening circle. This year they meet in Conference Room C at 7 PM on the third Monday of each month for Bible study. Circle 7 has two socials a year: a dinner in June at Betty Gaydica’s home and another get-together in August. These socials provide a great opportunity for members to get to know each other better. Circle 7 is active in Presbyterian Women’s events: luncheons, Least Coin, Celebration of Women Sunday, Valentine Tea, and the Treasures and Trinkets sale. They also support an empty stocking family at Christmas, provide items for the Northern Moore Family Resource Center, prepare dinner for Family Promise, and provide Fellowship Coffee on the second Sunday of each month. New members are always welcome.

This year’s sale will be held Saturday, April 29 in Fellowship Hall. Funds raised will provide scholarships for Brownson youth. You and your donations are most welcome! Now is the time to clean out that attic, storage rooms, kitchen cabinets, garage or wherever you stash stuff you don’t really need anymore. We invite you to contribute items such as furniture, jewelry, framed art, housewares, holiday decorations, china, glassware, and gardening tools. No clothing, please. Tax deduction receipts will be available. Please plan to bring your items to Fellowship Hall Thursday or Friday, April 27 and 28. If you have questions, please call Priscilla McLeod at 910-695-5551. We thank you for your continued support of Brownson’s Presbyterian Women.

We want to thank Blanchie and Coach Nate Carter for their inspiring talk following our March 20 luncheon. Even in retirement, this wonderful couple continues to make a difference in the lives of youth in our community; and in turn, the young people positively enrich the Carters’ lives as well. The next Presbyterian Women’s luncheon will be held May 15, 2017. Please join us and bring a friend! Enjoy a delicious lunch for just $7.00 per person (payable at the door). If you’re a new member to Brownson and this is your first luncheon, please be our guest! Reserve a plate by calling the church office at 692-6252 or by signing up in your circle. We hope to see you there.

We’ve been to the movies, played ultimate frisbee, and have introduced some new and crazy games that have challenged our Youth to trust and believe in one another. (Blindfold obstacle course anyone?)

We have some exciting activities coming up and would love to welcome ALL Youth in Middle School and High School to come join us Sunday nights in the Youth Suite. We meet at 5:30, pray and eat dinner together as a group. The group is then split into Junior High and Senior High for fun and fellowship before concluding at 7:30 PM.

Youth Group has been busy having lots of fun!

YOUTH FELLOWSHIP

This month, the Confirmation Class of 2017 will wrap up their studies and have the opportunity to join the church during a special service of worship on April 30. During that time, we will celebrate the faith journeys of our Confirmands and allow them the opportunity to express the commitment they have made to this church and to their faith. One aspect of the confirmation process that has been very meaningful and important to all involved is the role of adult mentor. Each participant invited an adult “Covenant Partner” to serve as a guide, mentor and confidant throughout the confirmation process. We know many of the friendships built during this time may last for years to come. We thank the Confirmation Partners for their time, commitment and guidance during this important milestone in our youth’s lives. We also want to thank our Confirmands for their steadfast studies and commitment to what it means to be a member of the church. They have had lots of fun while also wrestling with issues that influence their own faith development.

All you can eat Pancakes, Bacon and Sausage will be served by our Youth beginning at 9:30 AM in Fellowship Hall. Donations will be accepted and will be used for our Youth programs and missions. Your donations will enable our young people to experience what it means to live and serve in Christ’s name. We thank you in advance for supporting the Youth of our church!

BROWNSONyouthThis special service in the life of Brownson is a favorite one for our Confirmands and their Covenant Partners. It is a worship service in the sanctuary that is built around the tradition of foot washing. During the service, each Confirmand and Covenant Partner comes up one pair at a time and the Covenant Partner washes the feet of their confirmand. There is no speaking involved, just the act itself. It is a meaningful moment and one that marks a special milestone in their lives as a Christian and a servant in Christ.

Lenten Small Group Series Praying the Psalms

in the Season of Lent

Brownson has given a new meaning to the term “small groups!” We have had an amazing response to our small group series during this season of Lent. We have 11 groups with 190 total participants, with some groups as large as 23 attending each week! Because Brownson isn’t a church to turn anyone away, we have done our best to accommodate all who wished to participate. We are blessed by the meaningful ways of how these small groups are impacting the lives of our community.

Brownson Church loves our volunteers!
