A Blessed and Happy Easter to all

The readings for this Sunday are about God’s mercy, the necessity for trusting Faith and the need for the forgiveness of sins.

Scripture lessons: God revealed His mercy first and foremost by sending His only-begotten Son to become our Savior and Lord by his suffering, death and Resurrection. Divine Mercy is given to us also in each celebration of the Sacraments. The opening prayer addresses the Father as "God of everlasting Mercy." In the responsorial psalm we repeat several times, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy endures forever” (Ps 118). The first reading (Acts 2: 42-47), tells us how the early Church grew every day because of the acts of mercy and sharing, sacrificial, agápe love practiced by the early Christians. In the second reading (1 Peter 1: 3-9), St. Peter glorifies God the Father of Jesus Christ for showing us His mercy by granting to His Son, Jesus, Resurrection from the dead and glorious Ascension into Heaven. Today’s Gos-pel vividly reminds us of how Jesus instituted the Sacrament of Reconciliation, a sacrament of Divine Mercy. The Risen Lord gave his Apostles the power to forgive sins with the words, “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained" (Jn 20: 19-23). For centuries in the liturgy, the Church has proclaimed the mercy of God through the Word of God and the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ. Presenting "doubting" Thomas’ fa-mous profession of faith, “My Lord and my God,” the Gospel illustrates how Jesus showed his mercy to the doubting Apostle and emphasizes the importance of Faith.

Life messages: 1) Let us accept God's invitation to celebrate and practice mercy. One way the Church celebrates God’s mercy throughout the year is through the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion. Finding time for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is another good way to receive and give thanks for Divine Mercy. It is mainly through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy that we practice mercy in our daily lives and become eligible for God’s merciful judgment.

2) Let us ask God for the Faith that culminates in self-surrender to God and leads us to serve those we encounter with love. Living faith enables us to see the risen Lord in everyone and gives us the willingness to render to each one our loving service. The spiritual Fathers prescribe the following traditional means to grow in the living and dynamic faith of St. Thomas the Apostle: a) First, we must come to know Jesus personally and intimately by our daily and meditative reading of the Bible. b) Next, we must strengthen our faith through our personal and community prayer. c) Third, we must share in the Divine life of Jesus by frequenting the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist. Bl. Mother Teresa presents it this way: “If we pray, we will believe; if we believe, we will love; if we love, we will serve. Only then we put our love of God into action.

SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA (1347-1380) April 29 Imagine the pope receiving a young woman still in her twenties who addresses him as "my sweet Christ on earth," then orders: "Get back to Rome where you belong!" Amazingly, Gregory XI com-plied! Yet this was but one astonishing incident in the extraordinary life of Catherine of Siena, a truly unique medieval woman. Youngest of twenty-five children, Catherine refused marriage and became a Dominican Tertiary at sixteen, cloistering herself at home in contemplative prayer, austere pen-ances, and mystical experiences, culminating in "spiritual espousal" to Christ. Then, incarnating the Dominican ideal of "passing on to others the fruits of contemplation," Catherine left her solitude to care for the poor, nurse the sick, comfort the dying, and bury the dead. Increasingly renowned for converting souls and healing bodies, she was sought after to broker peace during civil wars and Church schisms. All this, and like Jesus, whom she called "my "Divine Spouse," she died at thirty-three! Four hundred letters and her spiritual classic The Dialogue inspired Paul VI to name her, to-gether with Teresa of Ávila, the first women "doctors of the Church." --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. Parish Events and News

We just wanted to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who helped with the fish fry's this year. From behind the scenes setting up, preparing, baking desserts to all the Friday night volun-teers. It truly takes an army and we are blessed to have the best volunteers. Until next Lent… . With Appreciation, Gene Blanc and Tina Hartung

Jesus said, “Let the lit-tle children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14 Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place during the 10:15 a.m. Sunday Mass. This pro-gram is designed for children ages three through eight (third grade). Children’s Lit-urgy of the Word brings the Gospel to the chil-dren at their level of understanding. Through appropriately adapted Scripture texts, music, prayer, and activities that reinforce the Gospel message, the children have an opportunity to celebrate their faith in a way that is joyful and relevant to their own young lives. The children are escorted out of mass by the program cate-chists after the Opening Prayer and return to mass during the Preparation of Gifts. For more information, contact Kathy Joslin at 636-677-1567 or [email protected].

Prayer for Protection During Tornado Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The season of tornadoes is upon us. These tornadoes invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this tornado season we turn to You. O loving Father, spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin Mary, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where stormless eternity awaits us.

Amen. [Adapted from “Prayer for Protection During Hurricane Season”, written by Most Rev. Mau-rice Schexnayder, second Bishop of Lafayette (1956-1972), following Hurricane Audrey in 1957.]
