God has created us for a purpose – to know and love him. Some of you may recall that this thought is also captured in the very first question of the Shorter Catechism of the Westminster Confession of Faith. It dates back to the 1600s in England and was intended to be a teaching tool, often memorized by children and youth as part of the confirmation process. It reads: Q. 1. What is the chief end of man? A. Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” So as we get increasingly busy, let’s all make sure to put God first in our lives. In Christ,

Our Deepest Sympathy is extended to…

Richard Early and family as they grieve the death of Richards’s Father, Harry.

As Fall starts to cool off the weather, the family calendar always seems to heat up. Between

football games, school activities and the beginning of all of those Thanksgiving and Christmas family

gatherings, it’s very hard to keep abreast of things. Our priorities often get crunched by the immediacy of

gift-buying, parties and other commitments of the holiday season. So how do we remember what’s most

important? The Bible is clear that we have a very clear priority as Christians – and at the top of that list is

    God.

One of the writers who writes on this very topic is one of the most famous and influential

Christian thinkers of all time, Augustine of Hippo. He is particularly important because he is widely read,

studied and quoted by a wide range of Christians. He is quoted extensively by John Calvin (a

Presbyterian), John Piper (a Baptist) to the current Pope, Benedict XVI (a Roman Catholic). In the first

paragraph of the first page of his most well-known works (The Confessions), Augustine writes:

“You stir man to take pleasure in praising you, because you have made us for yourself,

and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”

What a powerful statement. God has created us for a purpose – to know and love him. Some of

you may recall that this thought is also captured in the very first question of the Shorter Catechism of the

Westminster Confession of Faith. It dates back to the 1600s in England and was intended to be a teaching

tool, often memorized by children and youth as part of the confirmation process. It reads:

    Q. 1. What is the chief end of man?

    A. Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.”

So as we get increasingly busy, let’s all make sure to put God first in our lives.

    In Christ,
