FEAST OF THE ASCENSION

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, the celebration of Jesus’ entry into

heaven. In a certain sense, we could say that this celebrates the completion of Jesus’

mission of salvation. What comes next? This is really the passing on of the baton to us,

Jesus’ disciples. We are commissioned to make disciples of all nations, a challenge for

all of us to become witnesses of Jesus’ Kingdom of love for the world. We need this

kind of witness today more than ever, amidst the world’s kingdoms of hate and violence.

Only when they see that we love one another as Jesus has loved us, sacrificing for each

other and forgiving as He forgives us, will the world be moved to become His disciples.

We could never accomplish this mission on our own. Therefore, Jesus promises to send us the Holy Spirit.

Like the Apostles gathered with the Blessed Virgin Mary, we too must pray daily for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit:

Come Holy Spirit, come by means of the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

your well beloved spouse! Come, Creator Spirit, come from your bright heavenly throne,

come take possession of our souls, and make them all your own (cf. Veni Creator Spiritus).

NOVENA PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

To honor the first novena, nine days of prayer, from Ascension Thursday to Pentecost, you may

wish to use the following prayer composed by Pope St. John Paul in 1998:

Come Holy Spirit, come and renew the face of the earth!

Come with your seven gifts, Spirit of Life; come, Spirit of Communion and Love!

The Church and the world need You.

Come Holy Spirit and make ever more fruitful the charisms You have bestowed upon us.

DISTINGUISHED DISCIPLES

Several of our parishioners were honored recently at the Catholic Schools Annual Awards

Ceremony for Distinguished Disciples. The award was formerly known as the Character Counts

Award, but was renamed to better reflect our particularly Catholic approach to Christian living and

the virtues. Our student honorees for Annunciation School are Elizabeth and Michael Freisinger,

twins in the eighth grade, who have lived the gospel values with joy. In addition, another of our

parishioners was honored, Matthew Sluder, as a model of Christian leadership at St. Pius X High School.

Best wishes and congratulations to all of our honorees!

ORDINATIONS & FIRST MASSES

a.m. in the St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe, to which you are invited. Deacon Valentine’s

1st Mass will be that evening at 5:00 p.m. in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Peralta.

Our parishioner Deacon Rob Yaksich’s 1st Mass will be here at 12 Noon, followed by a

reception in the gym.

earthquake in Nepal, which will be distributed through Catholic Relief Services. Thank you

for your generosity to our friends in great distress.
