1 From the Pastor: On All Saints’ Day Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The autumn season brings with it the closing of the Church Year with “The Sunday of the Fulfillment” (also known as “Final Sunday”) on November 26. But before we get there, we have the joyous observance of All Saints’ Day, which is always November 1 but we will “transfer” it to the following Sunday, November 5. There is often some misunderstanding in regard to All Saints’ Day. For many years now, there has been a tendency in American Lutheranism to emphasize or recall ALL the faithful departed on this day of the Church Year. While it is certainly true that all who have died in the faith are “saints” in the truest sense of the term and have been translated to the Church Triumphant with all the company of heaven, All Saints’ Day has, historically (since the seventh century), been set aside to especially honor and commemorate those saints of yore whose lives were marked by an ultimate confession of Christ unto death, which is to say, those who were martyred. Many of the Christian martyrs have days appointed specifically to commemorate them on the Western Church Calendar, such as St. Stephen (December 26), St. Peter (June 29), and the Martyrdom of John the Baptist (August 29). While many martyrs are on the Church Calendar, many more have never had dates attached to their martyrdom so, All Saints’ Day was meant for commemorating all of them. Since this day honors those martyred, the more traditional and fitting liturgical color is red (for blood), not white, which is now the widespread practice. In the Roman Catholic Church, All Saints’ Day is officially called the Solemnity of All Saints or Hallowmas or All Hallows (from which the evening before derives its name Halloween or All Hallows Eve). Until relatively recent times, All Saints’ Day has been kept quite distinct from All Souls Day, which, oddly enough, is one day later on November 2. It is on All Souls Day that the Church has commemorated ALL the faithful departed. The confusion especially arises not only because most Lutherans do not observe All Souls Day, but also because the Roman Catholic Church has slowly dropped the distinction of All Saints’ Day as being only for martyrs and now includes all those who are in heaven. They now have made All Souls Day as a day to consider (and pray for) all the souls that are still in purgatory and have not yet been purified of all sins and therefore have not yet achieved the beatific state in heaven. We Lutherans, of course, have always rightly condemned purgatory as contrary to the Holy Scriptures and contrary to the merit of the all- availing sacrifice of Christ for the sins of the world.

From the Pastor: On All Saints’ Day

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The autumn season brings with it the closing of the Church Year with “The Sunday of the Fulfillment” (also known as “Final Sunday”) on November 26.

While many martyrs are on the Church Calendar, many more have never had dates attached to their martyrdom – so, All Saints’ Day was meant for commemorating all of them.

We Lutherans, of course, have always rightly condemned purgatory as contrary to the Holy Scriptures and contrary to the merit of the all-availing sacrifice of Christ for the sins of the world.

Nonetheless, let us, the children of the Reformation, observe in a truly evangelical way the distinction between All Saints and All Souls rejoicing in both the confession of the martyrs unto death, as well as, the faithful witness of all those who have finished their race and now rest from their labors in peace with their Lord.

As we especially commemorate, on All Saints’ Day, those who have been martyred for their faith, consider the following words written by an unknown author in the hymn “Rise Again, Ye Lion-Hearted” which was first published in 1712 and is likely based on Gottfried Arnold’s book entitled, “The First Love, i.e., A True Picture of the First Christians in their Living Faith and Holy Life” published in 1696. Unfortunately, “Rise Again, Ye Lion-Hearted” did not make its way into Lutheran Worship (1982) or Lutheran Service Book (2006).

Rise again, ye lion-hearted, Saints of early Christendom. Wither is your strength departed, Wither gone your martyrdom?

Lo, love’s light is on them, Glory’s flame upon them, And their will to die doth quell even the lord and prince of hell.

These the men by fear unshaken, Facing danger dauntlessly; These no witching lust hath taken, Lust that lures to vanity.

Mid the roar and rattle of tumultuous battle In desire they soar above All that earth would have them love.

Great of heart, they know no turning, honor, gold, they laugh to scorn, Quench desires within them burning, by no earthly passion torn.

Mid the lions’ roaring Songs of praise outpouring Joyously they take their stand, on the arena’s bloody sand.

Would to God that I might even, As the martyred saints of old, With the helping hand of Heaven, Steadfast stand in battle bold!

O my God, I pray Thee, In the combat stay me. Grant that I may ever be, Loyal, staunch, and true to Thee.

CHILDREN IN WORSHIP We know children can be a handful in a worship service. We believe

God wants your children to be part of the

worship time and so do we.

You can begin training them as soon

as they can sit by themselves. To help you,

here are some suggestions. First - Worship

with them, teaching them the pattern of

worship. Folding hands during prayers is a

good place to begin and standing when the

congregation does. As they get older teach

them to follow the service in the hymnal or

with a large print bulletin. Teach them the

hymns so they can sing with you. During the

sermon, let them color or play quietly.

And finally – they are children and will

not be perfect. We expect an occasional

“melt down” so hang in there. There is a cry room where you can sit and

listen to the service till your child calms down. You can take your bulletin

with you and follow along and you can even see the service through the

large window looking in to the sanctuary.

IN-SANCTUARY TIPS for active learners from Whisper, Whisper CPH

1. Leave a little wiggle space. Section off part of a pew with a

hymnal, and allow hand gestures within the “strike zone”

between shoulders and knees.

2. Encourage your child to sit, stand, fold hands, kneel, cross,

“play” organ, and “ring” bells at appropriate times.

3. Have the child point toward heaven or relevant visuals when he

or she hears certain words.

4. Once numbers are learned, let the child find hymns.

5. Consider a bag of sermon-only toys or activities so your child

does not tire quickly of them. As attention spans grow have

fewer, more mature options.

Consider your child’s fine motor skills: zipping, buttoning,

braiding, “sewing” a shoestring around a card rimmed by

punched holes.

Let him or her quietly stretch, doodle or look at pictures.

If your church has children’s bulletins, let your child work

through the pages and activities.

Let him or her color or look through Sunday School

material again.

SUNDAY SCHOOL November is our final month of study in the Old Testament of Kings and Prophets. In December we will prepare for the children’ Christmas Service and practice will begin. The service will be held on December 17 at 4:00. During Advent we will await and prepare for the long expected Savior, Jesus Christ; prophesied in the Old Testament, promised by God and delivered to Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem. We give thanks to God for providing for our greatest need – a Savior- to deliver us from our sins.

Lessons for November:

November 5: Three Men in the Fiery Furnace, Daniel 3

November 12: Daniel in the Lion’s Den, Daniel 6

November 19: God’s People go Home, Ezra 1-3, 7:11-28,

Nehemiah 2:1-8, 12:27-43

November 26: Esther, Esther

Pease note Sunday School new start time in November is following

9:00 a.m. service (approximately 10:15) and ending at 11:30.

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one

body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15

Happy Thanksgiving

CONFIRMATION AND WEDNESDAY CLASSES

November - - - a month of thankfulness! And we are thankful for many things, especially for the freedom to worship and study God’s Word. We are blessed with this right fairly assured we will not be breaking the law or killed for it as many followers of Jesus in the Bible were. It is not always easy to be in the world and not of the world, to stand firm for our faith, but we are humbly thankful that we have this opportunity. We have a loving, forgiving, and caring Savior, who came for all people. So we continue to study and be in the Word and Sacraments to grow in our faith. Through individual classes and Vespers each Wednesday, we gather together as the body of Christ to nurture the faith which began at our baptism.

“Give thanks to the Lord for He is good; His love endures forever.”

Psalm 118:1

Please note: There will be no classes on November 22, Thanksgiving Eve Service is at 7:00 p.m. November 29 will be the beginning of Christmas program practice. from 5:45-6:45

So many people do so much around

our church that may go unnoticed. Here are some things that have been noticed:

Thank you to everyone that helped set up the cross display: Kenny Maas, Mike Smith,

Peggy Carlson, John & Emily Dalluge.

Thank you Jim Meggison, John, Deb & Jim Dalluge and Kenny Maas for moving everything from the Parish Hall to prepare for carpet and moving it back in again.

A special thanks to the anonymous donors that paid for the carpet and installation.

Thank you to Ramona Glenn and Carrie Carey for helping with the children’s activities during the voters’ meeting on October 15

Thank you to everyone who provided material for the Reformation display table.

If you have noticed something or someone that should be recognized, please notify Kie in the office, [email protected]

We continue to uplift three missionary families:

Rev. David Preus and family in the Dominican Republic, David

plants new churches in this country. He forms and develops groups of believers into mature, self-sustaining and self-replicating congregations through Word and Sacrament ministry. He also helps with theological education as needed and works with local deaconesses in their mercy care

ministries throughout the country. lcms.org/Preus

Rev. Micah Wildauer and family in Togo Pastor Wildauer teaches at

The Lutheran Center for Theological Studies (CLET) which serves as a regional seminary for the French-speaking countries of West and Central Africa. Students and their families travel from their home countries to live

and study at CLET for three years in preparation for ordination and the

pastoral ministry. Funds for CLET provide for students living and educational expenses. The annual cost per student will vary based upon

national origin and family status. You can help support a student by sending a check to Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and including on the memo

line: CLET Seminary Students A16156-20701-385. lcms.org/Wildauer, Thank you for your prayers and ongoing concerns for our family here in Togo. All is well for us and we are settled into our new school year. Please continue to pray for the students and their health, as this is the end of the rainy season and malaria is all too common. Rejoice also in the recent birth of a student's daughter who was also baptized yesterday. If you are on Facebook, feel free to find my page to see recent pictures of our visit to a mission congregation in Tamongue, Togo. This is a village which is nearly 99% animist, but the Lord is working there. This past Saturday saw the baptism of 130 people into Christ (unfortunately we were unable to attend). These candidates, mostly children, came from this town and a neighboring village where a congregation already is established. It always amazes me to see the number of children who continually and voluntarily attend weekly services. To God alone be the glory! Christ's peace be yours in abundance, Rev. Micah Wildauer and Family

David and Valerie Federwitz, serving in Ghana since 2003.

Thank you for your prayers as we traveled from Ghana to the US. We arrived safely Everything went smoothly with our travels and we have all our luggage! Please pray for us to recover from jet lag quickly, remain healthy, and take the reverse culture shock in stride. But we’re loving hot water from the tap.

There are newsletters from all three Missionaries on the bulletin board.

November 5, "Blessed Are the Pure in Heart" Guest Speaker: Dr. Dale A. Meyer This weekend many churches observe All Saints Sunday, remembering those who have died in the Christian faith. That prompts us to ask, what does it take to get to heaven? Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:8, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." What that means is this week's Lutheran Hour message. (Matthew 5:8)

November 12, "More Than a Wish" Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus Not so long ago over 370 million tickets were sold for a Powerball drawing. Each person who made a purchase had hope that they might become rich. Most were disappointed. In 1 Thessalonians 4, St. Paul explains how the resurrection hope of Christians is better than the hopelessness of the world and far more solid than groundless wishful thinking. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14)

November 19, "The Reckoning" Guest Speaker: Dr. Dale A. Meyer You hear little talk about the 'Fear of God" anymore, but if you don't in some way fear your Creator who judges you down to your inmost being, why would you love your only Savior whom He sends you? A message about fearing and loving God. (Matthew 25:14-30)

November 26, "Show Me" Speaker Emeritus of The Lutheran Hour: Rev. Dr. Ken Klaus In Lerner and Loewe's musical, My Fair Lady, Eliza is being wooed with words by weak and wimpy suitor. She comments: "Don't talk of stars, burning above If you're in love, show me Tell me not dreams, filled with desire If you're on fire, show me." In Jesus' description of Judgment Day, the Savior goes on record: true love needs to show itself in action.

(Matthew 25:31-46)

40 Days for Life ends on November 5

The Celebration Rally Come to share

your experiences at the prayer vigil and hear the stories of others at the 40 Days for Life Celebration Rally. The rally is Tuesday, November 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Waterloo. It is a

potluck supper so bring a dish to share. We will celebrate the fact that Planned Parenthood is now closed on Tuesdays and has cut hours on Monday and Friday. Our hope is to keep a presence at Planned Parenthood when 40 Days for Life is over, during all 25 hours that they are open. We will have a schedule of the hours they are open at the celebration rally and hope that we can get 25 people to each commit to praying for an hour per week.

The following is the article that Sue Thayer wrote for the

Courier that they did not publish: Our great state of Iowa is well known as a friendly place, with lots of Midwestern hospitality. But did you also know that Iowa is the premier location of Planned Parenthood’s dangerous webcam abortion? This procedure is similar to what is known as a chemical or medication abortion with one big difference – there is no doctor on site and only non-medical staff are present at the visit.

In 2007, Planned Parenthood started doing these webcam abortions all across Iowa. A woman would come in for a simple urine pregnancy test and when it was positive, staff would immediately offer her a solution – webcam abortion. Because Iowa has no waiting period for a woman seeking abortion, it is possible for a woman to learn she is pregnant and begin the abortion process, all in one day. “Forty-five minutes, in and out, all you have to do is take a pill, problem solved!” the staff would say. Many women would jump at the offer and then soon regret their quick decision, realizing it resulted in the death of their baby.

The same office staff who checked the client in and ran the pregnancy test is also the person who performed the vaginal ultrasound. This is an invasive procedure which should be done by trained medical staff, but not at Planned Parenthood. Entry level staff as well as Center Managers received a day of training and then were “certified” to perform vaginal ultrasounds and then to train others to do them. As Center Manager of the Storm Lake Planned Parenthood, I was to train a day at the abortion facility in Sioux City and then return to train my staff.

Page 13: From the Pastor: On All Saints’ Day - faithupontherockfaithupontherock.com/uploads/November_2017_News.pdf · From the Pastor: On All Saints’ Day Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

13

The completed ultrasound image is then sent to Des Moines to a doctor who determines length of gestation. If the pregnancy is 70 days or less, the doctor can push a button on her screen which remotely opens a drawer in front of the woman. This drawer has been pre-filled with two very powerful drugs. The first is taken at the abortion facility while the doctor looks on via a Skype-like connection. This medication blocks the hormones and nutrients to the fetus, which ends the life.

The next pills are sent with the woman to take at home, thereby beginning the contractions. The mother is often surprised to see a tiny body of her fetus. During my time there, clients would sometimes return to the Planned Parenthood facility with their baby’s body in a Ziploc bag. Clients seeking abortion are told it will be a heavy period or a bit of tissue, but never are they told about the fetal development of a 70-day fetus. (70 Days is ten weeks, almost like the small models that we have at our displays.)

Many Iowans have tried to have this barbaric procedure stopped, but have been unsuccessful to date. Several states have banned the procedure. But several others have begun doing webcam abortion. The idea, born here in Iowa, was a remedy to a common problem in the abortion industry – a severe shortage of doctors willing to do surgical abortions. But with webcam abortions, one doctor can “see patients” all across the state without ever leaving her office.

Considering that the cost for a webcam abortion is the same as a surgical abortion, it is a big moneymaker for Planned Parenthood. No travel costs and a fraction of the staff expense and no surgical equipment required.

I worked at Planned Parenthood for nearly 18 years, was there when they started webcam abortion and have seen firsthand the devastation it brings. Each center is given a goal for number of abortions performed and those who reach their quota are often rewarded with pizza, time off or other incentives.

Planned Parenthood is more concerned about their bottom line than the health and safety of their clients. Thankful for a change of heart, I am now pro-life and share the truth about what happens inside the abortion industry.

(The last paragraph was an invitation 40 Days For Life Kick Off Rally that was on September 25 Where she was the guest speaker.)

Witness of the Crosses was set up at Faith as a witness to the many

lives lost each day in our country to abortion. Many thanks to Kenny Maas for overseeing it and Emily Dalluge for taking pictures from the rock. There were two responses on our Facebook page from people that are not members:

1. I am so proud of your church and your witness to saving the unborn!
