MDGs: strengths and gaps

• Measurable and time-bound goals and targets

• Helped to:

Sustainable development goals • In September 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted a new

development agenda for the period 20162030 that includes a set of sustainable development goals (SDGs)

• There are 17 SDGs with 169 associated targets that are supported by three pillars of sustainability:

1. Economic development

2. Environmental protection

3. Social equity

Sustainable development goals • End poverty in all its forms everywhere Goal 1

• End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture Goal 2

• Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages Goal 3

• Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all Goal 4

• Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls Goal 5

• Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all Goal 6

• Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all Goal 7

• Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all Goal 8

• By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100 000 live births

• By 2030, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age

• By 2030, end the epidemic of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, waterborne diseases and other communicable diseases

Unfinished business of the MDGs

• By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from noncommunicable disease through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being

• Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol

• By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents

Targets of the health goal

• By 2030, ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health care services

• Achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health care services and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all

• By 2030, substantially reduce the number of deaths and illness from hazardous chemical and air water soil pollution and contamination

Way forward• Strong political commitment

• Adequate financing mechanisms

• Multisectoral approach with engagement of all governmental sectors at the highest level

• Inclusive platform and partnership with key stakeholders including civil societies

• Use of new health technologies

• Accountability and close monitoring, using the global and regional targets and indicators that are harmonized with the SDG indicators
