Join me at the Commodore’s Ball which will be held on Saturday December 1, 2018.
Registration will open on November 4th, 2018 and will remain open until full or
registration closes on November 23, 2018. You can register on line at
www.shelterbayyachtclub.org. If you are having trouble logging on the website please contact Jim Barrett at [email protected] or call 360-466-3607.
I’d like to thank everyone who attended our October dinner and cast their votes at the annual Business Meeting. You unanimously approved some outstanding nominees to our
Board of Directors, and also approved the advancement of several current board members,
myself included, onward into 2019. Let me echo Terry in giving a heartfelt thank you to our
outgoing board members Sheila Cencak, Bill Davis, Bill Plummer, and Jim Barrett. It has
been a pleasure serving with you all and I appreciate all your support during the past year.
It seems like just a few weeks ago that Jim Barrett invited himself onto our boat, during a
club cruise to Roche Harbor, and convinced me to accept the nomination for 2016 Rear Commodore. The
process of “going through the chairs” to eventually become next year’s Commodore has been interesting,
eye-opening, and, surprisingly, fun and rewarding. If you think club leadership is something you might be
interested in yourself, let me know — I’d love to discuss it with you. Meanwhile, I appreciate everyone’s confidence in me, and our new board, as we chart the course forward into our yacht club’s 42rd year.
Now that our annual election is behind us, I’ll be working on filling our club’s many appointed positions for
next year. I’m hoping that those of you who are currently volunteering for one of these positions will say
“Yes!” when I call to confirm your participation for another year. Currently I know of three openings: Club Medic, Reciprocal Moorage Coordinator, and Training Coordinator. Please contact me if you are interested.
Finally, watch your mailbox for your 2019 dues statements, coming later this month. As always, your
statement will include a copy of your contact information for your review. That information determines,
among other things, how your entry in the 2019 Directory will appear, so please take a close look at your
address, phone numbers, emails, boat information, etc., and let us know if anything needs to be corrected or updated.
From the Clubhouse—Rear Commodore, Ken Olsen
As the cooler days of fall and winter come at us and we begin to put our boats away for the winter, Club Dinners become the focal point of our SBYC activities. Our Oktoberfest dinner
was a spectacular success as Hosts Jon and Debbie Galbraith and their team transformed
our clubhouse into a raucous Bavarian Beer Hall. Grill-masters Ken Olsen and Bill Davis
made sure that the Wurst was deeply flavored to stand up to the sauerkraut, potato salad
and hand made pertzels. The long communal tables encouraged boisterous conversation and a great sing-a-long to music provided by Wishkoskis’ and Hays' family and friends.
Now, you must mark your calendars for what’s up next:
November Clubhouse Dinner – November 17. The no-cost Chili Cook-off is back again this fall. Claus
and Turid Dassel return as hosts, and are in need of a few more chili cooks. If you’d like to volunteer to
prepare and share a pot of your favorite chili, call Claus at 425-466-7071. Even though we don’t charge for this event, please make sure you register on the website before registration closes on November 13, so that
we have an accurate headcount for room setup and seating.
Commodore’s Ball – December 1. Hosts Sheila Cencak, Kim Oldis and their dinner crew have a fun and festive Commodore’s Ball planned for us this holiday season. Registration will be open from November 4
through November 23. Registration is first come / first served and this popular celebration always fills up
quickly. Once you’ve registered, please note that we will require your payment no later than the
November 23 close date. Once registration closes on November 23, any unpaid seats will be offered to
people on the waiting list.
January Clubhouse Dinner – January 19. Hosts Brenda and Bill Davis will kick off 2019 with our annual
no-cost Soup Dinner. Any chefs who would like to volunteer to bring a steaming crock of homemade soup
Ahoy Mates! It may seem hard to believe, but it is time to start planning for the annual Christmas Boat Parade! That's right, I said it, the Christmas Boat Parade, which will be on
December 8th starting at 6:00 PM. Participants may moor their boats for free on the South
Marina Guest Dock as early as Friday, December 7th, to get them decorated and ready for the
parade. Following the parade, participants are invited to the Swinomish Yacht Club for a
BYOB hot meal and an awards ceremony. According to Larry Lien, the boats with the most lights have the best chance to win, so plan accordingly, and get into the Christmas Spirit!
Anyone wishing to participate should contact Larry Lien at [email protected] for registra-
tion and participation details. Looking forward, I'm happy to report that I had a good meeting with the incoming Fleet Captain, Dave Latimer, and with our 2019 Commodore, Jon Galbraith, to discuss the 2018 cruises and what we have learned that can make the 2019 cruises even better. Dave Latimer is very creative, and he and Jon are
working on a number of great ideas that I'm sure they will share with everyone once the plans are firmed up,
and I have no doubt that SBYC will have a wonderful time on club cruises in 2019. Yours at anchor, SBYC Fleet Captain Bill Davis

Training—November Training Session Cancelled
November’s training session is cancelled as we don’t have a topic or a presenter. We need suggestions for
our upcoming training sessions in 2019. Have an idea for something our club should learn about? Or do
you have a topic you’d like to present? Let us know!
We’re also looking for someone to serve as our Training Coordinator. This is a great way to get involved
with your yacht club. It involves arranging a schedule of 1-2 hour educational sessions covering marine/
boating information for the months of October, November, and January through April, soliciting topics and
presenters, and coordinating the presentations (usually the first Monday of the month at 6:30 PM) in the Clubhouse. Contact Jon Galbraith at [email protected] or (360) 630-5404 to learn more.
