Dear Parent/Carer,

As another successful and exciting year draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff and students for their hard work and commitment throughout the year. Thank you also, parents and carers, for the support that you give to your daughters and to the school. I hope that you enjoy reading about all the activities that have taken place this Term. We have certainly had a lot of fun and experienced success in many different areas.

Looking back over the year, one of the highlights of the year was undoubtedly being judged ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED in December and later by a team of Inspectors from the Diocese in March.

More recently, our school production of Godspell was a great success and showcased all the talent here at St Anne’s.

The GCSE and A Level examination season has now finished and we are looking forward to celebrating the results with students in August. Fingers crossed that they receive the results expected. They certainly worked incredibly hard for them with many students attending Saturday school regularly throughout the year.

Several members of staff will be leaving us this year to take up promoted posts in other schools or to work abroad. After serving the school for 37 years, Miss Griffin, Head of the MFL Department, will be retiring from St. Anne’s and we wish her a long and happy retirement.

We will also be saying goodbye to the following teachers: Mrs Ledesma, Mrs Nestorovska, Miss Delaney, Miss Neocleous, Miss Deadman, Miss Beekharry, Mr Uddin, Ms Guner, Ms Green and Mrs Olubando. Mr Grant will be taking a Sabbatical for one year.

I would like to thank them all for their hard work at St Anne’s and the contribution they have made to our school.

We look forward to welcoming back Ms Kitching to school this term following her maternity leave.

I would also like to congratulate Miss Aguirre on her forthcoming marriage and wish her lots of future happiness.

Finally, I wish you all a very happy summer holiday and look forward to welcoming staff and students back at the start of the Autumn Term.

The new Year 7 students start on Tuesday 5th September 2017 and we are really looking forward to welcoming them into our school community. All other Year Groups return on Wednesday 6th September 2017.

God bless you and your families.

On 21st June, our students attended and altar-served at the annual Good Samaritan Mass at Westminster Cathedral celebrated by Bishop Mark Jabale. This is a special Mass to mark the end of the Lenten appeal which raises awareness of families and children experiencing financial, mental and physical hardship. The story of the Good Samaritan is one of the parables of Jesus. He tells it in response to a question ‘who is my neighbour? It is an outsider - a man from Samaria, which was a country that the Jews despised - who decides to stop and show compassion towards the man, who had been attacked. He takes him to a safe place and provides for his recovery. Jesus’ listeners must have been very shocked by this story, which showed that this outsider better understood and fulfilled God’s command to love than those who were meant to be God’s chosen people.

It is a reminder to us all that ‘loving our neighbour’ is about helping those in need regardless of whether we know them or like them. We look forward to working again with Katie and the Catholic Children’s Society in the next academic year.

The Catholic Life of the School

Our summer term started with a whole-school assembly, where it was our pleasure to welcome back Katie Waring from the Catholic Children’s Society to present her with a cheque for £1947.23. The money was raised during Lent from our ‘Soup and Roll’ Fridays and is used by the Catholic Children’s Society to support families and children in the Diocese of Westminster who are experiencing financial hardships which impact on the family.

On Sunday 21st May 2017 we held our third tea party this year which was well-attended and enjoyed by our guests. As usual, our Year 10 students acted as hosts, serving our guests afternoon tea.

“We enjoyed being hosts for the tea party. It was good to interact with some people from an older generation and find out their views on life.”

Keisha Ansah 10A, Alexia Collier 10Aand Justina Adekannbi 10J

The entertainment was provided by KS3 and KS4 girls and included singing, playing the piano and guitar, and dancing which our guests greatly enjoyed.

We were delighted that we could provide an extra occasion that our guests could meet each other and the students, and this has been made possible by the number of staff from the Catholic Life Working Party who have made such an excellent commitment over the year. A special ‘thank you’ to them all! Thank you to all staff and students who have contributed to our Tea Parties this year and we look forward to welcoming back our guests next year.

“Your students are a real credit to your school. In fact they are all ambassadors both to your school and our country. They couldn’t do enough for us and their hospitality and courtesy was second to none. The entertainers too were excellent. Overall a good time was had by all. Thanks once again.”

Maria Caranjo, Sandra Latchmaker & Ursula Young

“I enjoyed getting to know the guests and was genuinely interested in hearing about their lives, upbringing and opinions. Overall it was a privilege spending time with them.”

The Catholic Life of the School KS3 Pilgrimage to Lourdes

Seventeen KS3 pupils, accompanied by Miss Geraci and Mrs Cheeseman, went on pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, during May half-term. It was an amazing week and we were able to meet lots of other pilgrims, both at our hotel and around the centre of Lourdes, all of whom constantly complimented our girls. As a group we took part in everything possible, and students participated in the International Mass, Blessed Sacrament Mass and the Torchlight Procession, walking with the school banner like all other school and parish groups. Two of our students also served during mass on one of our excursions days. It’s easy to say that our week in Lourdes was a life-changing experience. It was incredible to be amongst such an amazing group of girls who all looked after each other – it was lovely to see how close the group had become by the end of the week. Many of us made a promise to return to Lourdes again and hopefully this first school trip to Lourdes will be repeated.

During this Summer Term, our Fairtrade Team have held some different events to raise money and also to raise awareness of disadvantaged people in the world who produce the food we love, and are yet to receive a decent wage that’s worth the back-breaking hard work they do which we in the Western world benefit from so much. We designed T-shirts for our team (making sure that they were made of Fairtrade cotton) to further promote Fairtrade. Our most recent success was to promote Fairtrade bananas and cookies by making our fresh, mouth-watering,

thick and creamy, banana and chocolate chip cookie milkshakes - a taste so irresistible that certain members of the St Anne’s community couldn’t help but come back for seconds! Our thanks to the previous Fairtrade team who provided the blenders and environmentally friendly cups which we have been using.

Amarachi Opurum, Aishwini Suthakaran, Alisha Patel, Bahare Khairiabadian,

Monica Zaki, Tamara Carton Carberry, Tyra Andrews.

With events like these, our team hopes that pupils and staff will have a greater appreciation that Fairtrade products are just as good, if not, tastier than some of the other branded items from supermarkets and that this will encourage us all to choose ‘Fairtrade’ when doing our shopping. Many of the committed individuals at St Anne’s have made such a difference to the lives of a vast number of workers in developing countries, with just a simple purchase of a hot chocolate or a biscuit from our weekly Fairtrade stall. Each one of you has contributed to the continuing struggle to ensure that these workers are given their rights to a fair wage and proper working conditions without you even really realising it.

Makes you feel good, right? Want to feel even better? You may not be aware of this but Sainsbury’s are considering dropping Fairtrade from their tea range which will have a direct affect on the tea growers. Not getting protection from Fairtrade means those producers will not get a fair wage. Why not take just 5 minutes out of your free time to sign up to this petition, and as the strong community that we are, let’s all make the effort to stand up for our neighbours in need and put a stop to injustice by visiting https://www.change.org/p/sainsbury-s-don-t-ditch-fairtrade

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all – students, staff and parents for all your support. You’ve been tremendous, and our team couldn’t have been so successful without all you wonderful people. Have the greatest summer yet!

Last Term, KS3 students took part in the National Annual Easter Scene painting competition run by the Knights of St. Columba. The brief was to create a painting/drawing (A4 or A3) on the theme of Easter e.g. the last supper, the washing of the disciples’ feet, the crucifixion and the resurrection. We researched and studied some famous works, for example Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper and Andrea Mantegna’s The Lamentation over the Dead Christ. The girls were very enthusiastic and worked extremely hard with over a hundred girls submitting their paintings to the competition. I am delighted to report that three students from St. Anne’s had winning entries.

A member of the St. Monica’s Parish Knights of St. Columba group, Roddy Beare, came to the Year 7 and Year 8 Assemblies to award the girls their certificates and prizes. Due to all the fantastic entries submitted by Year 7 and 8 students, the school was also awarded a cheque for £200 which is being shared equally by the Art department and Catholic Life of the School Community Tea Party fund. Special thanks to Roddy and the Knights of St. Columba for their continued support of the school.

A Message from the Chair of GovernorsIt is a great honour and privilege to have been re-elected as your Chair of Governors for another term. I say this with great delight bearing in mind that St Anne’s achieved the highest pivotal point in OFSTED language, that being ‘OUTSTANDING’ prior to Christmas 2016. This was quickly followed by a Section 48 Diocesan Inspection where we again we were rated ‘OUTSTANDING’ on all counts. These results are dependent on many factors but the principle one is the hard work and commitment of all staff given to our girls. The Governing Body wish to publicly acknowledge, on your behalf, this hard work and dedication.

On a sadder note I have to report the loss of Fr Tom Montgomery from our Board. This is due to him moving to a new Parish in September. We wish him well in his new Pastoral area and thank him for his contribution.

Finally I would like to welcome Mr Matthew Dawson to our Board. Matthew, who is a practising barrister, joined us earlier this year, and hopefully he will enjoy his association with St Anne’s.

I wish you all a good summer break, returning in September for next year’s challenges of which I am sure there will be many.

Mr John Donnelly, Chair of Governors

As Governors, we are invited to attend the sports days every year. I have never managed to make it in the past so was determined to go albeit for a couple of hours this year, and what a delight it was.

It was like a military operation, very organised and very impressive. We were lucky enough to have a lovely sunny day at the great facilities of Lee Valley athletics stadium.

Watching all the Houses line up and the camaraderie was a joy. The Achievement Leaders and teachers organising all, from throwing sun cream to the girls that had forgot theirs to dealing with any injuries promptly and professionally.

I was particularly impressed with how the girls supported one another, each House roaring with pride for the members of their respective Houses and egging them on. What an atmosphere! One of the first races was the hurdles and one girl had a nasty fall, but when she was given the all clear by the teachers and walked back to her House, they all stood and gave her a standing ovation. It was quite a sight to see how the girls interact, support and look out for one another. This was true sportsmanship at its best. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay for the afternoon and watch the teacher’s versus pupils race which I hear was very exciting.

The whole event made me very proud to be a part of the St. Anne’s community, can’t wait to watch the whole thing again next year. Karen Suarez, School Governor

From September we will be leaving ParentMail, the service we have been using to move to a product called GroupCall Messenger. There is an associated parent app, Xpressions. If you download and use it we will no longer have to pay fees to text you and you can reply at no cost. Please get ready by downloading Xpressions from iTunes or Google Play. If you have a Windows phone we will make an announcement soon about how you can bookmark. Initially we will just be using Xpressions for text and emails although there is more it can offer. We can save thousands of pounds if all families sign up. Thank you. Mr Goldbart, School Business Manager

Mini-Holland Cycle Routes: Roadworks will continue to install the Mini-Holland cycle routes across Enfield for some time. Your daughter will need to allow extra time to get into school when the works affect her journey. Lower Site: If you live near any of the train stations on the route in and out of Enfield Town don’t forget that the fares have gone down. Your daughter can travel to school for 85p and go home in the afternoon for 75p. Upper Site: Buses 121 and W6 will be diverted until well into October. The nearest stops for the 121 will be at the North Circular/Green Lanes Junction. The W6 will be diverted through back streets to avoid the school end of Aldermans Hill which will be closed. Mobile Phones

Students are not permitted to use a mobile phone during school hours or whilst on school premises either inside the school building or in any outside area of the school grounds. Students must not be using their mobile phones as they approach the school entrance and all mobile phones should be switched off as soon as they arrive at the school gate before entering the school grounds.

If students are found using a mobile phone at any time it will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the day. The student will receive a Senior Management Detention and any further incident will result in a Fixed Term Exclusion.

There may be times, however, when teachers might allow students to use their phones in lessons for educational purposes. This is the only situation when students are allowed to turn on their phones and use them in school.

At all other times phones must be turned off and kept in the blazer zipped pocket. Students must always take responsibility for their own possessions, which includes not leaving their blazers unattended.

I am pleased to inform you that there will be new, nutritious and varied menus after the Summer holidays. We will have a new catering company, Accent Catering, providing all our food. Menus will continue to be displayed in the catering outlets and on our website. The price of the ‘meal deal’ will be held at £2.30; really good value. Food and drinks are on sale at breakfast (0745-0830), break and lunch. Don’t forget the daily limit is £6.00. If you would like your daughter to be able to spend more, then please write or email.

All meat is not ‘Halal’. There will always be several non-meat alternatives on offer every day including pre-packed salads and the salad bars - of course, not forgetting fish and chip Friday! If you have any questions please email [email protected] or phone Finance on 020 8920 5228.

Mr Goldbart, School Business Manager

Please ensure that all items of your daughter’s clothing items are clearly labelled with her name.

There are approximately 900 students in the school all wearing the same uniform! It is disheartening to see the number of garments that are handed in and never claimed. Items of clothing that have names marked in them are always returned to the students.

Lost property goes on display at the end of each Term.

Attendance and Punctuality at St Anne’sAt St Anne’s we take attendance and punctuality very seriously as these are both life skills which need to be learned and fostered for later life. ‘Attendance and Punctuality’ will be a school focus in the coming academic year, and we will be working closely with parents and carers, to ensure that all our students receive their full entitlement of education.

If students are to achieve their potential, good attendance and punctuality are critical. The link between attendance and achievement is well documented. At St Anne’s we want all our students to achieve the very best examination results and poor attendance will have a significant impact on student achievement.

We will be making use of Penalty Notices for students with persistent unauthorised absence. If your daughter is feeling slightly unwell, please give her any necessary medication and send her into school; if she is unwell at school, we will contact you. You will appreciate that if your daughter is not in school she will not be able to learn and will fall behind with her school work.

Persistent absence is when a student has attendance of less than 90%.

L 95% attendance is equivalent to one day of absence every four weeks. L Over an academic year this amounts to two weeks of absence (60 lessons missed!)L 90% attendance is equivalent to one day of absence every fortnight L Over an academic year this amounts to four weeks of absence (120 lessons missed!)

Our aim is for every student to achieve at least 98% attendance.

Please see the link to the Department for Education’s website pertaining to attendance: https://www.gov.uk/school-attendance-absence/legal-action-to-enforce-school-attendance

Should your daughter’s attendance become a concern, you will be contacted by either:

L the school - if your daughter is enrolled here and she does not attend (even if she is only absent for a day), orL the Council’s Education Welfare Officer - if he/she thinks your daughter is not getting a suitable education at home

You can be prosecuted if you do not give your daughter an education. You can only allow her to miss school if:

L she is too ill to attend school, orL you have received advance permission for her absence from the school

There is extra support available if your daughter cannot go to school for long periods because of a health problem.

The school will not grant holidays in term time. You can be fined for taking your child on holiday during term time without the school’s permission.

Local councils and schools can use various legal powers if your child is missing school without a good reason. They can give you:

L a Parenting OrderL an Education Supervision OrderL a School Attendance OrderL a Fine (sometimes known as a ‘penalty notice’).

The council can give you a fine of £60, which rises to £120 if you do not pay within 21 days. If you do not pay the fine after 28 days you may be prosecuted for your child’s absence from school.

ProsecutionYou can be prosecuted and could receive a fine of up

to £2,500, a community order or a jail sentence up to 3 months. The court also gives you a Parenting Order.

If you are having difficulty getting your daughter to go to school, St Anne’s and the local council can help.

We will discuss attendance problems with you and agree a plan with you to improve your daughter’s attendance.

Many local councils have teams that help parents improve their children’s attendance at school. The council will tell you if they are able to help, and this help could include:

L support to reduce the burden on children where families are in difficulty (for example if a child is spending a lot of time caring for someone)L working with families and schools to overcome bullying and other serious problemsL a parenting contract.

Little Miss Late!

Punctuality is a life skill that everyone needs to learn. However, some Key Stage 3 girls at St Anne’s have taken this to a new level! Reproduced below are some genuine explanations that students have given regarding their lateness during the Summer Term.

“Wardrobe malfunction!”

“Uber went in wrong direction.”

“I wasn’t fully well.”

“Change got stuck in themachine at Tesco’s.”

“Left sister at school.”

“Bus stop closed.”

“Tried to get in by the alley.”

“Used toilet for too long!”

“I had to buy snacks fora party.”

Laughing Gas and Other Legal Highs - a parents’ guide

Legal highs have received a lot of attention lately, with reports of overdoses in the news and new legislation since May 2016 which bans almost all psychoactive substances in the UK. As parents and carers being aware of current fashions and crazes in party drugs helps us to keep our children safe. One psychoactive substance to be particularly aware of is laughing gas, sold in canisters also known as “creamers” or “crackers”.

What is Laughing Gas? - Nitrous oxideNitrous oxide (N2O) is a colourless sweet-tasting gas often referred to as ‘laughing gas’. It has several legitimate uses in medicine and dentistry. It is also used and sold as an aerosol spray propellant within whipped cream canisters. Products include small canisters in large packs, each enough for a recreational dose. These dispense the gas into balloons, which are used to inhale the gas.

Retailers must not sell these to under 18s as it is illegal; however some young people buy them on the internet where it is harder to check the age of the consumer.

The 26th May 2016 Act bans psychoactive substances in the UK and prevents the supply of these harmful substances for human consumption. A psychoactive effect is something which affects a person’s mental functioning or emotional state. This would include effects that we associate with controlled drugs, including the following: L hallucinations L changes in alertness L perception of time and space L mood or empathy with others L drowsiness

Furthermore retailers should not sell them to anyone regardless of age if the substance is likely to be used for its psychoactive properties.

Laughing gas is not harmless In 2014 alone, 144 deaths in the UK have been attributed to Nitrous Oxide. Dr Paul Seddon, respiratory consultant at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton said nitrous oxide poses a significant risk to teenagers. It can lead to oxygen deprivation resulting in loss of blood pressure, fainting and even heart attacks. Many youngsters will have suffered similar problems after trying it out.

What parents can do1) Communicate Talking to your children regularly about what’s going on in their lives makes it easier to talk openly about drugs without it becoming a big deal for everyone. If they know they can trust you, they’ll be more receptive to having the conversation and hearing your advice.

2) Get the facts Knowing more about these drugs might help you when you talk to your child. Be aware that not everything you read about legal highs in the media is

accurate. If your child thinks you’re just trying to scare them, your advice might be less convincing.

3) Ask what they know already It’s very possible that your child already knows something about them. Rather than launching into a lecture about the risks, you might tell your child you saw an article about legal highs recently and ask what they’ve heard.

4) Try to keep an open mind You might find out your child has thought about trying or have tried legal highs. Stay calm and let them talk frankly, if possible.

5) Prepare for difficult questions When you talk to your child about a tricky subject like drugs, you should be aware that they might ask you a question you don’t quite know how to answer. This could be a technical question about the effects of certain drugs, or a philosophical one about the difference between taking legal highs and drinking alcohol.

More informationIf you or your child still have questions, then www.whynotfindout.org is a good resource for finding out the legal status, chemical constituents and history of many legal and illegal drugs.

Youth Travel Ambassadors

Our 12 TfL Youth Travel Ambassadors have been working extremely hard over the recent months. They organised and promoted a Walk To School Challenge to encourage more active travel and to try to eliminate overcrowding on buses. The group attended the YTA Expo at the London Transport Museum and presented their project to all present. Following this they were invited to Enfield Council to judge the Junior Travel Ambassadors event and promote continuing as a Youth Travel Ambassador. The girls will also be delivering an active workshop to Year 7s at PSHE Day on 19th July! Well done for all of your hard work!

The show follows Masterchef’s Gregg Wallace and award winning greengrocer Chris Bavin on a mission to prove that it is possible for families to save money on their food budget without scrimping on taste and nutrition. They hope that by analysing the shopping habits of UK families, they can help to show where we can source the best and cheapest quality food.

Godwin Lawson Foundation - Empowering Girls (Yr 9)

On Thursday 13th July our Year 9 Empowering Girls Group were invited to The Milfield Theatre to attend the Godwin Lawson Foundation’s Celebration event. This event was organised to celebrate young people’s talents and hard work. It was a special evening for us as our students were called to the stage a number of times. Our girls spoke proudly and honestly of their experiences and received praise from the audience. The girls received awards and are now official Peace Ambassadors for the charity and for our school. Ellie Brunton, Mia Suarez and Temi Atiba 9J came along to perform Ariana Grande’s One Last Time and then Sharon Ezeagu 9L (one of the girls involved in the Empowering Girls Group) sang Sia’s Titanium, both blowing the audience away and reducing some of us to tears. All students involved have worked extremely hard and we are truly proud of them!

Our school hosted the third Borough TeachMeet on Wednesday 12th July with teachers sharing ideas to promote collaboration and networking. Once again, it was a very successful evening with a number of our staff hosting ‘Share Tables’ as mini workshops.

Our students were also present during the evening and were praised for their courteous and welcoming support. Enfield Mayor, Councillor Christine Hamilton, was in attendance to open the event for us.

This year we also had a raffle where money was raised to help support RNIB. Thank you all the students, staff, parents and Governors who made the night possible!

Friends of St Anne’s - FOSAA Message from the Chair

I am really pleased to say that we have raised an amazing amount of money this year of which we are really proud. This would not have been possible without the contribution made by our volunteers and those attending and supporting our events. Our main aim is to raise money to help provide the school with equipment and resources and this year we have donated four playground benches, two for each site, a drum so there is one at each

site and some microphones. We are also going to be contributing towards new playground equipment. We also made a contribution to the Year 11 Prom and the Year 13 Barbecue. We are so grateful to all those who have supported us and look forward to even more people getting involved next year.

This year we have organised two quiz nights, four joint discos, ice skating at Alexandra Palace, a sleepover and a Christmas Fair. We have also supported at the Year 7 Mass, the Year 6 Welcome Evening, all Parents’ Evenings and the recent Godspell Show.

We’re looking forward to organising many more events next year and we’re always looking for new ideas so if you have any please let us know. We are planning to hold a Race Night in October and will be sending you further details about this in September.

We always welcome extra help so if you would be willing to spare a little time to help us at any of these events and we haven’t already got your contact information please e-mail these to [email protected].

Please don’t forget our Easy Fundraising scheme https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk and we also still have a few numbers remaining for our 100 Club which is a great chance to win up to £50.

I wish you all a restful Summer and look forward to seeing you all next year.Rachel Keeley, Chair, Friends of St Anne’s

Success in the Mayor’s Fourth Plinth Competition

Throughout this academic year St. Anne’s girls have had the opportunity to create art with the Saatchi Gallery. After a series of visits to the space and workshops with a Saatchi artist, the ladies exhibited their final work to the public. The work was titled Inclusion After Duchamp. The girls’ work was comprised of sculpture, photography, collage and paint and was exhibited alongside such international artists as Chuck Close and Nan Goldin. Well done, ladies!

Year 9 Computer Science MasterclassYear 9 students Erin Corcoran, Simran Vyas, Roisin Kelly and Emma Adu successfully completed a series of Computer Science workshops at Gladesmore Community School in Haringey. The Masterclasses allowed the girls to further their knowledge of computer science over a course of eight Saturday morning sessions. In completing the course, they have gained experience of a range of diverse topics within computer science, including logic, big data, security, robotics, optimisation, human computer interaction and computer animation. Well done, girls!

Year 10 Science Museum, LondonLast month, Year 10 visited the Robots exhibition at the Science Museum in London. The exhibition featured a unique collection of over 100 robots, from a 16th century mechanical monk to robots from science fiction and modern-day research labs, this exhibition enabled the girls to discover the cultural, historical and technological context of humanoid robots. They were able to interact with some of the 12 working robots on display.

It was smiles all round as the cast and crew of this year’s school production celebrated the end of a successful run. Godspell was performed to audiences in the Upper Site school hall on the 6th and 7th July, to rapturous applause and rave reviews.

With Eleanor McWilliams doing a magnificent job as the lead role of Jesus and featuring an incredible supporting cast the audience were delighted to see the enthusiasm of the cast as they sang, acted and danced with obvious enjoyment. The cast onstage were supported by fellow students and teachers in the orchestra who provided an outstanding musical accompaniment.

Students from nearby St Monica’s and Our Lady of Lourdes visited our upper site for a special matinee performance of the musical and left having had a “wonderful time”.

Miss Matilda Aguirre, who directed the show, said: “Together we have built this production and I would like to say how extremely proud I am of them and how impressed I was with their professional attitude during the rehearsal process. This production is very dear to me and so fitting that it should be my final production as Subject Leader after 13 years. Thank you to everyone.”

Congratulations and many thanks to the many members of staff who supported the students throughout the production.

Literacy Team Review 2016-2017The Literacy Team is a club consisting of students who want to share their love and passion for English with the rest of the school. This team was created last year by a small number of Year 8s and, since then, has blossomed into something spectacular.

The Literacy Team has transformed the perception of English, and has brought some enthusiasm into the topic. As one of the earliest members of the team, I have been privileged enough to witness the development and progress we have made. One significant and successful event was World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March. This was the second time this event has occurred, and personally, there was a noticeable change in the productivity of the event. We worked together to incorporate some of the ideas and themes from the previous year, while creating new and innovative concepts. The general feedback from the school was optimistic, and you could see that the students (and teachers) were beginning to enjoy English and its various branches.

This team has also created a diary, in which all pending / partially completed tasks are recorded. We hope that we can make our mark in our school occasionally, so that we can make a change in our school community in as many ways as possible. An example of this is our plan for weekly spelling tests, which we believe will have a visible impact in our literacy / spelling skills. We trust that these spelling tests will have the same effect as last year’s English Mentoring group (which has restarted this term). The team also aim to introduce SPaG workshops, with the same hope and faith that they will be as productive as our English workshops. These extra-curricular activities were created because we realised that some people were falling behind, and that we had the skills and compassion to assist them.

We have worked tirelessly as one unit, resulting in the massive upsurge in recruitments. Literacy standards have risen noticeably over the last year, and I am personally proud of all that we have achieved. I hope that the enthusiasm and dedication of the team continues to increase, even after I (and a few others) move to the Upper Site. Hopefully the team will sow more seeds of wisdom and love-of-English, which will we are sure inspire the next ‘generation’ of this team.

Emma Adu, Chair of the Literacy Team

Thank you to all members of the Literacy Team for their hard work and dedication over the school year. You are an asset to the school and I appreciate all that you do. Miss Wells

We will be looking for new members to join the Literacy Team in September.

Please see Miss Wells or Ingrid for an application form.

A Visit to the Coast - WhitstableBack in March, a group of Year 12 ‘A’ Level Geography students visited the coastal town of Whitstable in Kent to carry out various field work investigations about issues affecting the coastal environment in this area.

Many of the students found the residents of Whitstable to be some of the most courteous people they had ever come across in this quiet and gentle corner of England. I’m sure many of the residents equally found our students to be charming and delightful. Well done Year 12 for your painstaking endeavour measuring all those pebbles!

I’m glad they all realised the importance of dressing appropriately for a visit to the coast in March. Although a certain student’s green-looking onesie did have the look of misplaced Teletubby! But what do I know about fashion?

Geography Photo Competition - Summer 2016Once again it is this time of the year when we appeal to all you

budding amateur photographers. The summer break is when many of you will be off visiting interesting places as you go on holiday. This could be an opportunity to show off your eye for detail.

The Geography Department will be running a competition open to all year groups where you can submit one photographic picture of a natural or human landscape that you consider best captures the geography of the place you have visited. This could include for example landscapes such as coastlines, mountains or interesting city features. Even if you are not planning to go away you could still take pictures of interesting features in your local area that you feel relates to the subject.

Your selected picture will need to include your name and form group and description of where this photograph was taken. Please submit your photograph electronically by Friday 15th September to Mr. Sikuade’s post box titled Photograph Competition 2017.

All photographs will be displayed during the Borough Open Evening later in the Autumn Term. Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd best judged photographs that are entered.

So get clicking! Have a great holiday. The Geography Department

On Tuesday 13th June 2107, Olivia Martin, Karen Aguirre, Mia Suarez, Temi Atiba, Elizabeth Bruton, Ciara Mulherin, Alyssa Umali and Susanne Candy Nghotchouang from Year 9 and Precious Tshinay-Liwala from Year 10 took part in the Vocal Recital at the Dugdale centre which featured students from Enfield schools. The girls had arranged their own musical pieces, devised the harmonies and gave excellent performances.

We received a lovely email from Elena Browne, the Head of Singing at Enfield Music Service who said: “I just wanted to let you know how fabulous your pupils were at the vocal recital on Tuesday evening. Their performances were super and they conducted themselves professionally with composure and maturity. They were a delightful and respectful audience to the other students. The whole evening was absolutely lovely and I am delighted that your school was able to be represented by such lovely young ladies.”

It was a lovely evening and very inspiring to see such talent in young people across Enfield schools. Well done to all our students who took part and we look forward to participating again next year.

Mr Kwan, Head of Music

On Tuesday 27th June, St Anne’s provided music for the 50th birthday celebration of the UK’s very first ATM at Barclays Bank. It was a lovely event. The students sang in perfect harmony and passers-by became transfixed by the beauty of music. This was followed by an excellent performance by Anna-Maria and Ellie McWilliams, who treated us all to medleys of popular songs. Many thanks to Karen and Vaughan for all the hard work that they put in and well done to all our gospel singers who took part. We all look forward with great anticipation to the cash machine turning 51 next year!

Money, Money, Music! Successful PiXL Audition

PiXL is a partnership of 1500+ schools across England and Wales, who work to improve student achievement. They hold an annual celebration and on 7th July our Gospel Choir auditioned for this year’s event - and they did us proud, with the judges commending their professionalism. One of the songs performed was Jesus We Worship and We Praise Your Name and, since being shared online, it has had 1.5K views. We are delighted that the Choir have been offered one of the performance slots in the October event. Thank you to Ms Gibson and Mr Larmond who work with them each week. English Schools’ Championships

Middlesex Track and Field Championships

This year St Anne’s had 7 girls selected to represent Enfield Schools’ at the Middlesex Championships. The event took place on Saturday 10th June and was a long, tiring, but successful day for our students.

Rute De-Almeida is now the Middlesex Schools’ Under 15 Shot Champion; Paige Mattison-Weekes in the Middlesex Schools’ Under 17 200m Champion; Elise Modeste came 4th in an extremely fast Under 17 100m final; Nikki Kuye managed to secure a place in the Under 15 100m Final, finishing 6th overall; Gemma Falade came 5th in the Under 15 High Jump; Aneesa Williams came 6th in the Under 15 High Jump

Congratulations to all girls – and we look forward to seeing your performances next year.

Year 7 & 8 Middlesex Track and Field Championships

A new competition this year to St Anne’s saw 15 students selected to represent the borough of Enfield at the Middlesex Junior Track and Field Championships. This was a great experience for the girls to compete in teams made up of students from other school’s across the borough, competing at a high level. Once again our girls put up some fantastic performances.

Year 9 Rounders After finishing 4th in the league, the Year 9 players were keen to challenge themselves at the Borough tournament at Winchmore School. There were 7 schools involved and St Anne’s began strongly with a convincing 3 rounder

victory over Chace. There then followed a 5-5½ fiercely competitive defeat to Enfield County. Latymer proved too strong in the next game, but the girls redeemed themselves with a win against Oasis Hadley. Unfortunately, in the final game, St Anne’s were defeated by the eventual winners, Highlands. The girls worked really hard in practices, developing new tactical play in the field and should be commended on finishing 4th overall (despite beating the team who finished 3rd). Congratulations to Katie, Hannah, Sion, Rute, Isabelle, Rhian, Uju, Katerina, Olivia and those who contributed to the league - Mia, Olivia M and Faith.

Borough ChampionshipsOn Wednesday 5th July, the Lee Valley Athletics Centre was host to the Borough of Enfield’s Athletics Championships. Starting at 8.30am and not finishing until 5.00pm, it was a long, ‘HOT’ and tiring day. It was extremely successful for St Anne’s with students coming away with an array of medals and trophies. I am pleased to say that St Anne’s are now the Year 7, Year 9 and Year 10/11 Borough Athletics Champions!

The last term is always the hardest; exam period and lovely hot weather can make it difficult, but yet our girls continue to work hard and try their best. This term it has been difficult to choose pupils for achievement and effort in science. The girls we chose have gone above and beyond and deserve the recognition. Well done! And finally well done to all our girls who have contributed work or who have got awards for the challenge board this year. I hope to carry it on next year to further inspire more of you! #ThisGirlCan #WomenInScience Miss Khan, KS3 Co-ordinator Science

Science has been fun this Summer Term. Our guinea pig club has been continuing. Girls have been spoiling Eugene, Oreo and Einstein a lot! Take a look at the picture. Also we have had really successful sessions for the Year 5 taster days and in regular classes things have been getting explosive! We are taking ten Year 12 physicists to CERN in July and that gives pupils a chance to experience the world of nuclear physics and see it in the country that leads current research! We hope to continue to offer a broad approach to Science so pupils get a holistic view and not just see it as compartmentalised. After all, science is EVERYWHERE and it links us all together

Thank you to our House Prefects!Year 7: Sammie-Jo, Cynthia and Desiree

Year 8: Dominique, Katie, Ann and SandraYear 9: Sarah, Elaine and Hanifah

The Prefects did a great job this year, especially in preparing and fundraising for our Feast Day. (Katie in Year 8 moved forms during the year, but we were pleased to have had her as a Prefect for a short while.)

Well done to 8A for being the Form with the highest collective number of Vivo’s this Term – which meant that they had a pizza party!

Well done also to 7A for being the Year 7 Form with the most winning points at Sports Day (unfortunately we didn’t quite finish as overall winning House but we all know that it is the taking part that counts!!!).

KS4 NewsA massive well done to 10A, 11A and 12A for raising £207 for Breast Cancer Awareness! It was really warming to see the positive and uplifting messages written by students to those women who are suffering with breast cancer.

We would like to give a special thank you to Phinyada in 10A for organising a waffle sale to raise money for Comic Relief. It was a great success and the waffles and ice cream were a treat!

Have a happy and safe summer, Angela HouseLove from Ms Gumbrell and Miss Yiannakas x

Art Competition During this term some students took part in an art competition. The contestants had to draw an image linked to Easter, which allowed them to think deeply about what Easter means to them. Laureen Ashley came third in the competition and we as a house are really proud of her. She drew a stunning picture and allowed everything around her to inspire her. Well done, Laureen Ashley!

Jenifer Perera 8J

Other News Some of our girls were involved in the school performance of Godspell and what a performance it was. Well done, girls.

Ruby Ahern was awarded the most Vivos in Year 7.

Mrs Sanders and Mrs Okereke

Congratulations to KS3 Faustina House students who won Sports Day for the second time in three years. The girls pushed themselves to the limit and were outstanding competitors.

Well done to Precious Chima in 7F, who became the Middlesex Schools 75m Hurdles Champion and the Enfield Borough Champion – an amazing achievement! The PE department praised our students for their efforts, and we would like to thank Chimdi Chibuenyi in 12F for her fantastic support to the PE department during the Borough Championships.

Naomi Baptiste and Ellsha Kwae (8F) and Ciara Mulherin (9F) gave amazing performances in our school play Godspell – they were a joy to watch.

We would also like to congratulate our students across all Key Stages for their achievements this year, especially those who achieved the most Vivos in the Summer Term across a variety of areas including effort, participation, leadership skills, an outstanding piece of work, being helpful and overall achievement.

St. Faustina House has had a truly successful year and we are looking forward to more outstanding achievements in the Autumn Term.

Mrs Hyland and Miss Marcou

Two brilliant winners: Rio (Shot-Put) & Jaci (High Jump)

St Laura House

St Laura’s House had a very successful end to the year. I would like to congratulate both our Year 7 and Year 8 teams on winning first place at Sports Day. Overall, we achieved a very proud second place, a great improvement since last year. All Laura’s students contributed to our success on the day, some displaying great talent and endurance, others with their relentless encouragements and cheering. Rute De-Almeida, a Year 9 Laura’s student, was awarded the Helen Wood cup for her impressive performance on that day. A well deserved reward – well done, Rute. You are an inspiration for the rest of our House.

St Marianne Cope HouseIt was with much pride at Sports Day this year that I watched members of Marianne House throw everything into each event, and we all cheered loudly when, time after time, our girls stood on the podium to collect their medals. Tochi was a shining star in the javelin, but as you will see below, we had many stars on the day. They truly were ‘The Champions’. Whilst we did not win the event as a House, we could not be out competed for enthusiasm and team spirit. Well done, participants and supporters alike. It was a great pleasure to spend the day with you.

It was also time to reward academic effort and success as well as motivation and helpfulness on both Sites. During our end of year assemblies a range of Laura’s students received certificates for their contributions.

Thank you so much to all Laura’s students – have a wonderful summer break and we will see you in September.

Over 300 students travelled to Chessington on Tuesday 4th July. The weather was perfect and so were the girls, staff at Chessington commented and we received a lovely complimentary email about “the girls in the socks”. What more can an Achievement Leader ask for? We could not have gone on the trip without our Form Tutors and staff, so a big thank you to them all. Ms Chin and Mrs Jones

End of Term Day Out at Chessington World of Adventures

A brilliant day was had by Year 9 at Thorpe Park on Tuesday 4th July. Swarm, Nemesis and Ghost Train seemed to be the most popular rides of the day and of course everyone was totally soaked on the water rides. Doughnuts, burgers and fries were the food of choice as usual.

Mrs Cheeseman

Other students had a lovely day out, too - at the Dugdale Centre (bottom left) and the London

Bulletin Extra • Key Stage 3

The current Year 9 student are about to embark on the next stage of their education at St Anne’s and as part of their transition from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4. Our Year 9 students spent two days at Upper Site getting used to the building, learning some study skills and taking part in several physical activities. The students were taught the importance of being organised with homework and setting a timetable for study to help them keep up to date with their work load. The students were based in their new form rooms for part of the day and team building and listening skills were the basis of all of the activities showing the need to be alert and focussed to get tasks completed in the best was possible. Mrs Cheeseman, KS3 Achievement Leader

Year 5 Taster Day

Every year we have a pizza celebration afternoon for the top form in each year group at Key Stage 3. On the 4th July a group of 19 Year 9 and 10 students visited the London Dungeon. We did a bit of sightseeing and a lot of walking. At the dungeons we learned a lot about the darker side of London’s history. The girls were beautifully behaved and we had a really great time.

Duke of Edinburgh Silver AwardOn 13th July Year 10 students, along with some girls from Year 12, set off for the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award Final in Derbyshire. In hot, sunny conditions, 26 St Anne’s students completed 30 miles of walking, 3 days of camping, 3 days of camp food – so no doubt parents suddenly knew what it was like to be loved and appreciated when their daughters returned home!

“The best trip ever” was the main comment received from Year 10s and they were absolutely right - it certainly was! We were blessed with good weather and there was hardly any queuing, so everyone got the chance to enjoy the big rides. Sadly, it will be our last whole Year Group trip, so it was good to have such a happy, final memory.

Bulletin Extra • Key Stage 5

This year we have taken part in the WE Schools Project, run by the WE Organisation. They promote volunteering and seek to inspire young people to make a change in their community as well as learn about new issues that affect others. Students in Year 12 have taken part and raised awareness for issues that they feel passionate about. At PSHE day this week, the group delivered a creative and engaging workshop on one of their chosen issues - Cultural Stereotypes. The girls thoroughly enjoyed engaging with the students in Year 9 and spending time discussing and celebrating all cultures within our School Community. Year 9s wrote poems, raps and decorated bunting flags which will be used in a display. Each form were also given pins to place on a World Map to show where they are from – an example from 9M with their red pins is reproduced on the right. Well done Year 12 Students. Update from the Sixth Form CentreThe Summer Term has been a stressful time in the Sixth Form with AS and A2 exams taking place. We have been very impressed by the focus and drive shown by all of the students and look forward to sharing their success on Results Day, 17th August 2017.

On April 25th 2017, motivational speaker David O’Mahoney led the Sixth Form assembly, treating us to his excellent presentation and several guest speakers.

“Bye Bye Year 13!”Every year the school arrange a barbecue for our totally exhausted Year 13s at the end of their public exams. This year was yet again a great occasion, with plenty of laughter, eating, drinking, dances and of course, the famous ‘Turner Prizes’.

Bulletin Extra • Key Stage 5 WE Workshop

We decided to live dangerously this year and bring out the more adventurous side of our girls, so we took them to participate in some quite challenging tasks on Tuesday 4th July. We all had a go at riding Segways, air rifle shooting, axe throwing and mountain boarding and most frightening of all, going high into the air to complete the aerial adventure challenge. Secure in our safety harnesses and hard safety hats, we scaled the ladders and completed obstacle courses not for the feint hearted. Everybody had a great day out and we all felt we have overcome some of our fears, especially those like me terrified of heights!

Our WE Girls delivered an engaging workshop to all Year 9 students on PHSE Day based on one of the issues they have explored this year: Cultural Stereotypes. Students spoke about where they’re from, discussed stereotypes and got creative with poems / raps. Well done to the girls from Year 12 who organised and ran the workshops.

UCASYear 12 have been working with Mr Wiley, our in-house UCAS Advisor, to ensure that all students are now registered with UCAS. The students are now busy completing their Personal Statements over the Summer holidays. If you are the proud parent of one of our Year 12 girls, please remind your daughter to use the SACU Personal Statement builder - http://sacu-student.com/ - which we require so that we can track and assist with the completion of what is a very difficult document. There is lots of helpful advice on the UCAS website about completion of the Personal Statement for parents who want to get involved.

Only the bravest students were courageous enough to hold the tarantula when we visited London Zoo recently.

The Biology and Psychology A Level students enjoyed an amazing day studying Biodiversity, conservation and phobias as part of their syllabus. The sun shone and a fun time was had by all.

Duke of Edinburgh Award ExpeditionTwenty six students from Years 10 and 12 have been busy all year working towards earning their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. Whist the sun tried its best to melt us, spirits remained high and the students sang, laughed and danced their way through their practice expeditions. Their final expedition in Hathersage, Derbyshire, took place between the 13th and 15th July and the girls did us proud!

Bulletin Extra • Key Stage 5 Head Girl Closing Statement

The 2016-2017 academic year has been one filled with a healthy balance of fun and hard work. The Head Girl Team has had a great time working with students and staff in a productive and enjoyable academic year for all.

At the beginning of the year, my team and I set out to achieve the following goals:

• Todevelopanall-inclusivecommunitywheregirlscanflourishacademically• Toprovideopportunitiestoaidthepersonaldevelopmentofstudents• ToupholdtheCatholicethosandbenefitthewidercommunity.

Based on the ideas we were able to implement during this year, I am proud to say that the Head Girl Team has met those three important goals. For example, we ran extra-curricular clubs like Debate Club and Presentation Skills (on the Lower Site) to allow the girls to develop beneficial skills like communication, public speaking and team-work. Moreover, we were able to organise some fundraising events for a range of charities including The Alzheimer’s Society, Shelter and The British Heart Foundation. It has been incredible to witness the amazing generosity of St Anne’s students and staff through their contributions. Additionally, in order to aid the girls’ academic development, we continued a tradition of the mentoring scheme which supports KS4 students preparing for their GCSE examinations, to reach their full potential. The mentoring scheme was very successful this year and I look forward to learning of the girls’ achievements in August.

Bulletin Extra • Key Stage 5Another event my team and I were excited to organise with the College Captain Team at St. Ignatius was a Sixth Form Quiz Night. We had a good turnout with very competitive teams on both sides, but as always, we showed the guys that St. Anne’s girls have got brains as well as beauty! All funds were donated towards the St. Ignatius Tanzania trip as a way of showing our support but also making the guys feel better about not coming first. More recently, the Head Girl Team supported FOSA’s annual KS3 Sleepover - an event packed with laughter, dancing, karaoke and barely any sleep! It was a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know the younger students and engage more with them, which was another important goal for us.

While we have achieved so much already, there are still some exciting ideas that we cannot wait to execute in this last leg. As mentioned in the last bulletin, the Head Girl Team planned to develop a school app to improve connectivity between members of the school community. However, with further consideration, we have decided to create a student hub instead – a platform specifically for students to interact with each other via a discussion forum, and to share resources and study tips. We are very excited for the launch of this project and hope we can involve students in the testing process. As well as that, we are currently working on creating a promotional video for the school, depicting the different parts of school life to prospective parents and students.

It has been a great privilege to have served the school community as Head Girl and my team and I are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute to the development of different aspects of school life. Thank you to all students and staff who have supported us since the beginning of the year, and to the Premises Team without

whom none of these events would have run as smoothly as they did. Finally, thank you to my brilliant team: Shannon, Jodie, Lauryn, Nilofar and Aswiniy. You have all been a massive help and we have achieved so much with our shared enthusiasm and determination to serve our school community in the best way possible. I appreciate all your efforts – it has been a joy working so closely with you all.

I wish all students, staff and families a wonderful summer and a great start in the new academic year! Fola Olaleye, Head Girl
