Stepping into New Shoes… When the announcement was made of Sharron Owen’s retirement, it was quickly followed by the question “Who will replace her?” Not a question to be taken lightly, especially when the answer was, it quite literally took two people to replace her… one in the Communications Department at St. Joseph’s Care Group and one as Executive Director of St. Joseph’s Foundation. The work that Sharron did for St. Joseph’s Care Group (SJCG) and St. Joseph’s Foundation (SJF) would be too much to explain in a simple article. Suffice to say she left some big shoes to fill. The decision for me to step into those shoes wasn’t made lightly, but it was made easier by the support I received from Sharron herself, the staff, as well as the belief I have in the work that we do at SJF. Since I started with the Foundation in 2009, I have grown to appreciate how truly important the work done by SJF is to support the capital needs of St. Joseph’s Care Group. For SJCG, the role of “meeting unmet needs” is not just a slogan. Each day I see how steps are taken to ensure those who are most vulnerable in our community, the elderly, the infirmed, those with addictions, those who require end of life care, and many others have become the first priority of the staff. The people who work for SJCG, in every capacity, do so embodying the values of Care, Compassion, and Commitment that SJCG has become noted for. This reputation is then reflected in the generosity and support of donors and contributors to SJF, as these donations are an appreciation of the care given by SJCG. As I step into Sharron’s shoes (and shadow), I do so without any reservation, as I know that everyone at SJF...the board, the staff, our volunteers and myself......are committed to fulfilling the Mission of the organization including supporting the capital needs of SJCG, now and in the future. I am pleased to share that the Hospice Palliative Care renovation project at St. Joseph's Hospital is underway as of March 11, 2013. As you may be aware, this project was put on hold in January so that St. Joseph's Care Group (SJCG) could work in cooperation with the Northwest Local Health Integration Network to address the urgent overcapacity situation at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). At that time, Alternate Level of Care clients were admitted from TBRHSC to any available bed at SJCG. This helped to address the gridlock situation at TBRHSC, and ensured clients were provided the level of care and support they required. Although the overcapacity situation has certainly not been fully resolved, our partners have recognized that we need to get these long-awaited renovations underway. To that end, the Hospice Palliative Care Renovation Project Group has reconvened to revise the project time lines and begin the work. As progress unfolds, we will keep you informed. Despite the short delay to our renovations, we are proud of our role in this collaborative effort to meet the needs of our community and as an essential partner in our health care system. We will continue to work in partnership through these challenging times. Thank you to everyone for your patience and support through this unexpected delay to our renovations. The men and women of the Auxiliary to St. Joseph’s Care Group work tirelessly to raise money to ensure the comfort and safety of clients of St. Joseph’s Care Group are met. This past year the Auxiliary contributed $60,400 to St. Joseph’s Foundation to meet this objective. This is a significant gift, given the economic climate, difficult changes and competing events.

Although much of the money is directed towards purchases, such as beds and lifts for clients; the Auxiliary also reco3gnizes the need for beauty and comfort in a person’s surroundings to ensure their overall well-being. To that end, this year they directed that a portion of their annual proceeds be allocated towards the purchase of local art for the beautification of the new Sister Leila Greco Apartments.

This art is displayed throughout the building in common use areas, providing beauty, inspiration and ambiance to a home environment.

To find out more about the men and women of the Auxiliary to St. Joseph’s Care Group and how you can join, please contact Janet Murphy at 623-5978 or [email protected]

The numbers are staggering… 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime* 1 in 10 Canadians (over 15 years of age) will report symptoms consistent with alcohol or illicit drug dependence* 20% of people with a mental disorder have a co-occurring substance abuse problem*

This is all the more overwhelming when you realize only 1/3 of those who need mental health services in Canada actually receive them, due in part to the fact that although mental illnesses constitute more than 15% of the burden of disease in Canada, they receive only 5.5% of health care dollars.* This is why the steps taken by St. Joseph’s Care Group to meet these unmet needs are critical now more than ever. SJCG has identified Mental Health & Addictions as one of its key strategic priorities for 2012-2015. SJCG will take all steps possible to provide and deliver these services in our community and region, and will do so using the principles of client-centred care. Recently it was announced that Balmoral Centre will receive $988,000 in funding from the North West Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) to increase crisis withdrawal and stabilization services, allowing the centre to serve 60% more people annually. As part of a two-year pilot project, Balmoral Centre will be converted from a Level 2 non-medical facility with seven crisis management beds and 15 stabilization beds to a Level 3 facility, with 22 combined crisis management and stabilization beds, and will include 24-hour nursing support. Home withdrawal management, telehealth and expanded day services will also be provided. It is anticipated that improved access to services at Balmoral Centre will result in a 20% reduction in addiction-related visits to the emergency department. This in turn ensures that emergency department staff are available to meet the needs of other people in our community. The project will also reduce reliance on other emergency services, such as the police, to meet the needs of this population. The most important impact will be on the lives of the people we serve who will be able to receive the most appropriate level of care in a timely manner and have the opportunity to engage in substance use treatment before discharge.

In addition to these services, the development of the Specialized Mental Health Rehabilitation Program at St. Joseph’s Hospital site is underway. This new facility will establish a new model for mental health services in our region. Clients of the new facility will receive specialized care allowing them to develop and foster the skills they need to make a successful transition from the hospital to their home in the community. This new model also reduces the stigma of mental illness, and ensures that people requiring services remain a part of, and connected to, their home community. Janet Sillman, Vice President of Mental Health and Addiction Services spoke recently about the services provided by St. Joseph’s Care Group:

“St. Joseph’s Care Group is not only committed to meeting the needs of people in our community with mental health and addiction issues, it is also committed to changing the view and perception of mental health and addictions in our community. The development of the new Mental Health Wing at St. Joseph’s Hospital is a progressive step. Long gone are the days of institutionalizing people and ‘locking them away’; we are dedicated to ensuring that, with the proper treatment, supports and services, everyone can have a full life as active members of their community.”

SJCG's ongoing commitment to its mission of meeting the unmet needs of the people of Northwestern Ontario is reflected in the work of these two initiatives. The Care Group will continue to advocate for the best possible care and services for all people, including those who are marginalized and vulnerable.

A key component of the St Joseph’s Care Group employment services is a unique social enterprise Team Werks Cooperative. One of the largest worker cooperatives in Ontario that was developed to provide clients with mental health challenges work and training opportunities.

The enterprise is comprised of 8 different business units ranging from a Car Wash to a Scanning Company. With a wide range of jobs to choose from and a work environment that is supported by Occupational Instructors the clients are given an opportunity to gain much needed work skills. The confidence gained through employment, and for some the opportunity to have an ownership stake in the social enterprise, has played a significant role in supporting ones recovery. “For me the Co-op is exactly what I want. It has helped me stay out of the hospital. I feel good about myself.”

Check out the products and services Team Werks offers at www.teamwerks.ca or phone 346-3694 for a brochure on the bare wood furniture products available for spring, schedule a time to get your car washed or set a time for the

members to pick up your paper for shredding.

Redesigning and Redefining Mental Health and Addiction Services at SJCG

This new initiative, Green Werks garden , grew over 1,500 pounds of produce last year that was distributed to the various food banks throughout North Western Ontario. Creating jobs, feeding those in need and being green. A win win win!
