Heddens, MA, BSN, ARNP, CPSN President This Labor Day weekend will have meant the end of summer for most of us, even though we may still have some gorgeously warm days here in the Midwest. ASPSN business is historically quiet during the summer, but now we’ll be quite busy as we start the countdown to the Annual Convention in Chicago, now less than two months away. I hope you all have received a brochure from ASPS for our first jointly-sponsored “Physician Extender Training Course” which will cover filler, injectables, and light-based therapies. This is an all-day course offered on October 31 (but you’ll have plenty of time to recover for our Friday evening of ballroom dancing – costumes optional). The faculty for this course includes Tracey Hotta, a past president of ASPSN. There are three online modules which must be completed prior to attending this course, so don’t wait to register! Just a little bit more about Chicago: Anyone who likes exercise should definitely bring walking shoes. One block north of our hotel is the walkway to reach Lake Michigan where there’s a fantastic paved walkway that runs all along the lake- front. This provides a super easy option for whoever wants to walk or run off all the good Chicago dining that we’ll be enjoying. Also, the new American Girl store may be open just a block from our hotel if any of you or your daughters are big collectors. A tip for any of you Midwesterners like me who will be driving to our meeting: our hotel is on a one-way street. If you drop off your luggage and head on down the street for about two blocks, you’ll come to an underground parking garage on the left-hand side of the street. This garage offers very reasonable rates for parking – especially if you opt for the weekly rate – much more economical than paying for valet parking rates. See you very soon in Chicago. The answer to the August trivia question “What is the connection between blood and Chicago?”: Chicago was the site of the first blood bank.

GORE-TEX Implants as an Alternative to Autografts in Rhinoplasty

According to findings published in the July/August Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, a 17-year study has yielded that GORE-TEX implants pro-vide an alternative that is both safe and inexpensive in rhinoplasty procedures that would normally use autografts. The study by Dr. Krzysz-tof Conrad and colleagues from the University of Toronto does note some complications, but they believe the benefits of the GORE-TEX implant outweigh its relatively minor disadvantages. According to the authors of the findings, GORE-TEX implants boast a greater natural feel and blending with the contours of the nose all while requiring less operating time.

Measuring the UVA Protection of Sunscreen Products

A comprehensive article from Expert Review of Dermatology illuminates the methods by which the effectiveness of sunscreen products can be accurately and consistently measured. Because UVA radiation contributes to skin damage and other skin conditions (such as erythema, aging of the skin, and some types of skin cancer), the advances in sunscreen development are important. However, while measuring sun-screens by how they prevent sunburns does measure their effectiveness against UVB exposure, this method does not measure their effec-tiveness against UVA radiation and its adverse effects since sunburns are not largely caused by UVA radiation.

The methods by which we can assess the UVA filters being developed for protection against UVA exposure and the science behind them are explained in depth, and this article should be of interest to anyone desiring further knowledge in the use of sunscreen in preventative skin care.

2008 Scientific Sessions UpdateGeorgia Elmassian, BAS, RN, CPSNScientific Sessions Co-Chair

Remember that Election Day will be during the ASPSN fall meeting. Therefore, please be certain to inquire from your local government how to cast an absentee ballot in order for your vote to be counted in the November 4, 2008, elections. Although all states allow absen-tee voting, the procedures and qualifications vary from state to state. For example, the amount of time that an application for an absentee ballot must precede the election can vary. The proper ballot formats are prescribed by each state election board and can be found and ac-cessed on your own state government’s website. You may also contact your local county clerk’s office for additional information or request that an absentee ballot be mailed to you. Be a conscientious ASPSN member and citizen: VOTE.

At the time of this update, your 2008 Scientific Sessions Planning Committee is putting its finishing touches on the Chicago meeting. This year, as previously discussed, we will be adding new programming styles into our annual convention. One new and fun feature we have planned is to commence the meeting of October 31st with Friday evening roundtables and networking. This venue will be followed by a Spooktacular Monster Mash during which costumes, dancing, and other welcome festivities will take over the remainder of the night. This will be a chance for our members to enjoy some delectable treats, sweets, and witches’ brew. So dress up if you’d like, and join us if you dare, for a bit of fun and scare. It will be spooktacular! We will see you there!

UPCOMING CERTIFICATION EXAMSIf you are considering taking the CPSN certification exam, now is the time! The following are upcoming dates and locations for the exam.

The CPSN exam will be offered at the Canadian Plastic Surgical Nurses Symposium, September 12 – 13, in Montreal, Quebec. The exam will be given on the 13th following the meeting on the 12th.

The exam will be offered at several sites by C-Net on October 11. To check for locations, go to http://www.cnetnurse.com.

The certification exam will also be offered at the ASPSN Annual Convention in Chicago, October 30 – November 4. The review course will be on the 30th and the exam will be on the 31st. See the ASPSN convention brochure for more information.
