A Brief History of Myrgan Wood By Master Heinrich Alois Kannessohn

In the year 1978 Gregorian GEOFFREY OF CRYTENHAM made his way into the wilds of the prairie steppes and in 1979 Gregorian founded the Shire of Myrgan Wood, which is old English for Merry Wood. The site of the original Shire was on the eastern bank of the river and is now marked with a permanent monument to Pioneers at the top of the Broadway Bridge. Since the founding of the Shire much has changed in Myrgan Wood. Originally, the Shire was part of the Middle Kingdom as there was a Mid-Realm barony, the Barony of Castel Rouge, just nine hours journey. The closest West Kingdom, An Tir was a Principality of the West at that time, outpost was 21 hours west—the Barony of Lion’s Gate. So, Myrgan Wood was made part of the Middle Kingdom. Three years later, in 1981 Gregorian, KING HUGO OF SELDOMREST bestowed Baronial status on Myrgan Wood installing LORD GEOFFREY OF CRYTENHAM as Founding Baron. As the furthermost bastion of the Mid-Realm, the Barony was granted the right to fly the Middle Kingdom Royal Standard without the Crown being present—a great and single honour. Unfortunately, many members left the Barony to pursue their mundane careers and by the summer of 1987 Myrgan Wood was reduced in status from Barony to Shire. As the years passed An Tir was formed and new colonists entered the region. Settlers from the Kingdom of the West, and later the Kingdom of An Tir, settled in the region and Montengarde, Borealis, Bitter End, and Valley Wold were founded. With these new neighbours the ties between Myrgan Wood and the Mid-Realm began to weaken as the ties west and south grew stronger and stronger. Eventually the citizens petitioned that the knowne world borders be redrawn placing Myrgan Wood within the then seven-year-old kingdom of An Tir and the fledgling region of Avacal. The petition was accepted and in January of 1988 treaties were signed and the kingdom borders redrawn. Myrgan Wood was now part of An Tir. A royalist core, the Barony was granted the singular right to fly the An Tirian Royal Standard without the Crown being present as it did the Mid-Realm Royal Standard by King Eric and Queen Megan in 1988, The Kingdom Banner was made by Duchess Hlutwige Wolfkiller.

In a few short years Myrgan Wood had grown again with new passion and ambition. With the assistance of the Shire’s ROYAL PATRON DUKE SIR TJORKILL KANNE, he had become the Shire’s Royal Patron at Thirteenth Anniversary, the Shire of Myrgan Wood petitioned to have its Baronial status restored. KING RORIK GUNNARSSON restored Myrgan Wood’s Baronial status at Myrgan Wood’s Fifteenth Anniversary in 1994. Their Majesties concurred with the populace’s wishes and elevated LORD GARETH BYDAWYER and the LADY ROWEYNA THE REBELLIOUS to become the founding Baron and

Baroness of Myrgan Wood’s Baronial Restoration and GEOFFREY OF CRYTENHAM was made Baron of the Royal Court. Baron Gareth and Baroness Roweyna were later followed by: HIS LORDSHIP KARL ALEXANDER ROSS AND HER LADYSHIP EVE DE LACY the second Baron and Baroness of the Restoration; then SIR TARAS OF KIEV AND THE LADY BIANCA ISABELLA VERDI the third Baron and Baroness of the Restoration; who were in turn followed by DON RAOUL DELAROCHE AND HER LADYSHIP ROXANNE DELAROCHE; and in the year 2004 Gregorian at Myrgan Wood’s Silver Jubilee LORD FERGHAIL AND VISCOUNTESS CATRIONA MCMANUS became the Fifth Baron and Baroness of the Baronial Restoration. In the second reign of KING TJORKILL AND QUEEN HLUTWIGE, being 1991 Gregorian, were attending Myrgan Wood’s Twelfth Anniversary event Their Majesties were approached with the idea of making Avacal a Crown Principality. Their Majesties agreed and documents were drawn up and at Kingdom Twelfth Night, January 1992 Gregorian, KING TJORKILL AND QUEEN HLUTWIGE became the first Crown Prince and Princess of Avacal. Later in 1996 Gregorian, when Avacal became a Principality in its own right, Myrgan Wood had the honour to host the First Avacallian Investiture with DUKE SIR RORIK GUNNARSSON AND THE LADY GWENDOLYN GOVER becoming Avacal’s Founding Prince and Princess and the Progenitors of the Royal House of Avacal. The Barony of Myrgan Wood is a crucible for Avacallian Princes and Princesses. In Avacal’s eight-year history fourteen of its thirty-two princes & princess, spanning nine reigns, were from or raised in Myrgan Wood: Viscount Sir Vik Vikingsson who has reigned five times; Viscountess Ceridwyn of Abergavenny who created the Order of the Princess’ Knot, Sir Viscount Albrecht von Rugen who has reigned twice and created the Order of the Gilded Griffon, Viscount Sir Gunther Rorikson who has reigned twice, Viscountess Tatianna de Verona, Vicountess Catriona McManus who has reigned twice, and Viscount Sir Ivar the Black and Viscountess Asney Grimolfrsdotter. The Gregorian year of 1998 was a banner year for Myrgan Wood. In September of that year the Barony

hosted the most eastern An Tir Crown Tourney: “PRAIRIE ALPINE CROWN” autocratted by Heinrich Alois vonSpeyer (who later became Heinrich Alois Kannessohn). It was the largest event ever hosted by Myrgan Wood with 400 people from every part of the Kingdom attending. Plus in February Their Royal Majesties, KING BRENDAN AND QUEEN ARYANA, elevated Myrgan Wood’s first peers of Merit: Sir Taras of Kiev—Knight Of The Society, Mistress Fabienne l'Accusee—Companion To The Order Of The Laurel, and Master Mihangel of Brecon—Companion To The Order Of The

Pelican and made His Lordship Gareth Bydawyer and Her Ladyship Chikakukawa no Shunzei (aka Roweyna the Rebellious) Baron and Baroness of the Royal Court. As the years went by Myrgan Wood gained more Peers of Merit: Sir Gunther Rorikson—Knight Of The Society; Sir Ivar the Black—Knight Of The Society who was knighted by Queen Groa with the assistance of Duke Rorik Gunnarson; Master Heinrich Alois Kannessohn—Companion To The Order Of The Pelican; and Master Colin of Elwood—Companion To The Order Of The Pelican.

In the first years of the Barony the main event was Border War, which saw armies from the Middle fighting off the advances of the West and An Tir. DUKE SIR STEINGRIM WULFARESSON STALLARI who was Prince of An Tir at the time, was the first An Tirian Royal to set foot in Myrgan Wood. KING HUGO OF SELDOMREST was the first and last Mid-Realm Monarch to come to Myrgan Wood. Later Candlemas, in February, became the signature event in Myrgan Wood. It ran for many years with one of the best one being held in 1986 Gregorian when KING ARTHUR AND QUEEN MELISSA of An Tir attended. As the years went by Anniversary, heralding the first event in Myrgan Wood became the primary event of the Barony, which it remains. At Tenth Anniversary, the first Anniversary as part of An Tir, Myrgan Wood became the first group to be awarded the Forget-Me-Not, from QUEEN HLUTWIGE. Myrgan Wood’s Anniversary Events have seen many more wonderful things: the establishment of a Royal Patronage, a wedding, the restoration of the Barony, peerages bestowed, many, many Royal Visits, and a great many other significant events in Myrgan Wood and even Avacallian history. And now in 2004 Gregorian Myrgan Wood celebrates its Silver Jubilee welcoming friends and all the many people who have lived in Mrygan Wood home to commemorate this special day.

And now for some of the lighter points from the last 25 years of the King’s Garb…
