We celebrated the feast of Mary McKillop last Friday week and the feast of The Assumption of Mary last Friday. My thanks to the Year 2 children and the Pre-Primary children respectively for leading the liturgies under the guidance of staff and also Pauline Burwood for coordinating the music. A number of classes at our school have also been on excursions recently to complement the teaching and learning in the classroom. The Year 4 Cl ss spent a day recently on retreat, as part of their preparation programme for receiving the sacrament of Holy Communion this Sunday 23 rd August. This will be a very special occasion for the children and their families. My sincere thanks to all the children who are assisting with providing the music as a member of the choir, under the guidance of Pauline Burwood. Our Pre-Primary and Year 1 children spent some time last week at the “Kelmscott Farm” learning about a range of farm animals. Our Pre-Primary children have also witnessed 16 chicks hatching in their classroom over the past couple of weeks, it has been a very exciting time for them. The Year 2 children also enjoyed a couple of hours at the Perth Mint last week, consolidating their learning about where and how money is made. The winter sports fixtures for the older children at our school are in full swing, we have already played St Patrick’s and St Benedict’s and this week we will be playing against Our Lady of Mount Carmel before we compete in a lightning carnival on Thursday 27 th August. Looking forward, we are celebrating Bookweek next week, with a range of activities organised by Lorraine Szefczyk, culminating in our dress up day on Friday 28 th August. On the evening of Friday 28 th August, we also have our P&F Quiz Night and with well over 100 tickets sold already it will be a wonderful community event and fundraiser. A huge thanks to the parents on the organising committee for coordinating the evening. Finally, we are asking all the fathers and grandfathers in the community to book themselves out for an hour or two on the morning of Friday 4 th September as we celebrate Father’s Day in our community. A number of cases of chicken pox have sprung up in the school this term as well as being active in the surrounding community through sports clubs and various groups. A reminder that if your child is unwell to please keep them home to avoid spreading illness. Dates to Remember: Friday 28 th August – Dress Up for Bookweek Friday 28 th August – P&F Quiz Night Friday 4 th September – Father’s Day breakfast Best wishes for the coming fortnight. Paul Hansen PRINCIPAL From the Principal Prayer for the Assumption of Mary Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives You praise, for all life and all holiness come from You. In the plan of your wisdom she who bore the Christ in her womb was raised body and soul in glory to be with Him in heaven. May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Playground Update Earlier today Tracy Blaszkow from Kidsafe WA (Playground Advisory Service) visited our playground Stage 1. She was very pleased with the development and impressed with our clever use of limited space. Tracy considered it a suitable play area for the school and congratulated us on our efforts. We also discussed plans for Stage 2 and Tracy gave us some great ideas for sustainability in our water-play area, suggestions on pre-fabricated climbing structures and resources for further investigation. As we work towards Stage 2, we are currently reviewing the retaining wall along the east perimeter of the playground. If any parents have experience or ideas relating to retaining wall construction, please contact Emma 040 968 6795 or Deirdre 040 229 3407. Or if you would like to take an active role in the planning and construction process, please let us know! Playground Elements
