About Seminar In contemporary society, there are different social, economic, political and cultural complexities, with varied challenges and opportunities. The new economic policy has in many ways widened economic disparity and social inequality across continents in the present century. There is a need to understand the patterns of poverty and social exclusion in ways that can lead to more effective action to tackle them and create an inclusive society. The proposed National Seminar will provide an insight into the causes of poverty and inequality, relevant governance issues, and local solutions to exclusion that have newly emerged in India in the context of the caste system. The Seminar will draw on multiple social science disciplines, including Sociology, Social Work, Economics, Anthropology, Political Science, Environmental Sciences/Law, etc. Social exclusion is multi- faceted and combating it requires multi-policy response. Social exclusion is the process whereby access of certain people and groups to their basic rights is systematically blocked. This exclusion in the present day has several dimensions: Social, Economic, Political, Cultural and Regional. The diverse reality of exclusion manifests itself differently, although it has common elements: Poverty, deprivation, precarious work situation, education deficits, disability and dependence. Programmes and policies that fail to address the specific needs and vulnerabilities of all prevent social integration. There is a need to ensure their effective participation in society to eradicate potential vulnerabilities. There is a need to create inclusive societies. The Seminar will focus on the causes of the problems and seek suggestions on formulation of innovative social inclusion policies that include effective programmes and projects. Social inclusion must be at the centre of the agenda. This is particularly important for the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Objectives. The multiplicity of factors that produce social exclusion implies that social inclusion must tackle a wide range of thematic focal points. Social inclusion policy needs to be formulated as a vehicle for overcoming inequalities. Efforts must be intensified to incorporate the voices of the excluded or those at risk of exclusion, into the mainstream. Objectives of the Seminar - 1. To initiate, discuss and deliberate on social exclusion in the Indian context 2. To initiate a dialogue on inclusive society and discuss and deliberate on it 3. To discuss inclusive strategies and thought processes 4. To discuss effective formulation of innovative social inclusion policies that includes effective programmes and projects.
