Mid-Year Report By: President Dinesh Sharma
Following is an extract of President Dinesh Sharma’s report
presented at the Annual
General Meeting held on Wednesday, 16th December 2020
“Fellow Rotarians, it is difficult to believe that current Board
will be reaching mid-year mark in two weeks’ time and here I am
presenting mid-year report while next year's Board has been
introduced just a while ago by President Elect See Mee Lee.
Going back , who would have imagined at least not me, that my
installation as President of Rotary Club of Singapore will be
virtual and club meetings will follow as well and likely to be up
to end of the Rotary year. We took the challenge in our stride and
started finding ways to make the best out of the situation being
virtual. There are always opportunities out of this adversity. I am
confident to say in most areas we have achieved much better than we
could have done in pre Covid 19 environment, only exception being
International Service as we are unable to travel. Although global
grant projects in first six months of the Rotary year have far
exceeded any previous time of six months. The skepticism turned
into positive right from installation of the President which was
customized to physical protocols using special software integrated
with Zoom technology and we had great attendance.
We are spot on our plans we presented on 1st of July 2020 during
first Club Assembly. We have completed many of our projects and
activities and elsewhere it is a work in progress. There have been
interruptions on and off from the beginning, slowed down the
process and affected the progress in achieving our targets. We
remained focused on our mission keeping the interest of the Club on
the top. I must give my heart felt and sincere thanks to many of
the members, more so my seniors who have communicated their
appreciation of our work we are doing under the circumstances.
Thank you so much.
Our mission as stated in the beginning of the year is to
strengthen our Club to generate lasting impact from our work while
creating inspiring experience for our members engaging them with a
sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Our focus remains #1 To strengthen our Club #2 Impactful
community project #3 Inspiring experience #4 Engagement of the
members. I will summarize how we have performed in each of these
areas.
To implement our plans and strategies we formed Club committees
to carry out implementation.
#1.Club Administration with our Honorary Secretary Brigitte
Holtschneider as Chair. #2. Membership and TRF, With VP Suresh
Keerthi as chair, #3 Public Image, Chair Director Sonali Sinha, #4
Club Rotary Foundation Committee (CRFC) with PP Tapan Rao as
Chair.

Mid-Year Report…contd.
Finally our established Service Committees, CSC, VSC ISC, and
YSC #6 Finance Committee, yet to be formed.
Club administration - After 25 years of service to our Club we
managed graceful exit of Ivy Yew our employee in Club secretariat,
paving the way to planned digitalization of our secretarial work
and accounts. We were lucky to find Linda Lim as Executive accounts
and administration and decided to take over the accounting from
outsourced company. It will allow us to produce audited accounts in
time in t future.
If last year's accounts are ready and transferred to us by
previous Board, by end of January 2021, we will try to achieve
first interim closing of accounts on 31st March and final on 30th
June 2021. We should be able to transfer full accounts to new Board
by end of July 2021 or earlier. I urge members to visit Rotary
office and see the efficient team and the improvement in
environment.
We have separated Club and Service meetings which used to be
combined on Wednesdays. The Service meetings are back on Thursdays
and these are well attended, and Committee Chairs can use one hour
focusing on service projects and activities, the Club meetings are
for one and half hour from 7 to 8.30 pm including some fellowship.
There is significant improvement in attendance even without having
two meetings together.
Week after week we have given you inspiring speakers, talking on
current and relevant topics. It has been possible due to formation
of speaker subcommittee from the beginning instead of just Rotarian
Joseph Chia who handled this activity by himself and remains one of
the key members and helps in finding good speakers. As a result,
attendance in weekly meetings has increased between 52 and 67. On
two occasions, the number of attendees exceeded 100 up to 124 due
to the speakers.
KYFR, Know Your Fellow Rotarians, new program introduced this
year is gaining popularity. We are presenting you every week, one
of our members who speak about himself, his vocation and Rotary
life plus engagement in the social work. The successful program
supersedes the classification talking in past which could not be
sustained more than couple of weeks. The members find it engaging,
getting to know fellow Rotarians, and finding the gems, and unsung
heroes among fellow members.
We still need to improve system and processes and re-engineer in
some areas, and it is planned in the next half of the year.
One of the most important areas to strengthen our Club is the
membership. It is the members who make the Club. The membership
growth which remains stagnant, renewal process with diverse
membership, induction of youth and women are of paramount
importance. I can say with pride what has already been achieved so
far. Starting from 146 members on 1st July 2020, we have inducted
15 new members, two prospects are ready for induction on 6th of
January 2021, and four were approved today by MC&D Committee to
be inducted on 13th or 20th January 2021. Six more prospects are
attending our meetings to pre- qualify for approval. We are
maintaining diversity of professions, vocation, nationalities,
race, and age. We have added two members at the age below 30 years
and others are less than 50 years. The average age of club members
has dropped from 58 years to 53. Most

of the new members are attending weekly Club meetings and
participating in respective service committees and other events
like Jolly walks on Sundays.
To attract members we are successfully creating pull factors
rather than push, by good publicity, regular updates on website,
prospecting through LinkedIn and Facebook and prompt and regular
communication by our Membership chair and VP Suresh Keerthi, who
meets them physically and keeps communicating after the
induction.
All is not well, we still have significant number of members not
attending meetings, nor participating in activities now and even in
previous years while a small group is keeping off from weekly
meetings. Our team will work on this in second half of the year and
we will try to get these inactive members to become active as far
as possible.
I wish to thank all members of MC&D which is now a Club
committee with all Past Presidents, IPP and PE as members, for
efficient handling of classification, approval, and Rotary
information for new members.
We have an active committee on Public Image with Director Sonali
Sinha as Chair. We created E file on the Club which can be sent to
new prospects or anyone who wants to know about our Club just by a
click. The website and social media updates are regularly done, and
several other initiatives are in progress.
For the first time we established Club Rotary Foundation
Committee with PP Tapan Rao as chair, which is open to members like
any other committee. Global grants can be applied for local
projects as well by all Service Committees.
Since July 2020, 19 global grants have been approved valued at
US dollars 1.3 million and six more projects have been submitted
for approval. We have received 6 PHF commitments, two pledged and
two Major Donors, one of them being a new member so far. We have
targeted 100% EREY this year, and will put our best efforts to
achieve it.
Polio challenge was successful program in raising funds for End
Polio by step up program and weekly walks attended by members. I
would like to thank Rotarian Adnan Ansari for successful initiative
in raising funds for end polio and starting weekly walks.
We are continuing with weekly walks renamed as jolly walks where
members are exploring new parks on Sundays unseen by many of us and
enjoying fellowship with all safety measures being followed.
We have planned many reforms as reported earlier; most of these
are in progress. We are in process of adopting 2019 Club
Constitution in coming week or two as it is delayed due to RI
review of some clauses added in compliance with Registry of
Societies (ROS). It will be followed by implementation of strategy
report, changes in bylaws and SOP.
Being the leading Club in the District, we need to set an
example and work along with Rotary International with
implementation of 2019 Constitution, which is mandatory.

Mid-Year Report…contd.
Finally, our interface with the community is with the Service
Committees, I must say despite COVID-19 restrictions they have done
remarkable work details of which will be presented at the Club
Assembly.
Our Community Service Committee, Director Dr Irina as chair and
her team have clocked in substantial volunteering days in service
of local communities. These include volunteer visits at Willing
Hearts by 12 to 15 Rotarians for consecutive two weeks, monthly
distribution of bags from Food from Hearts to the residents of
assigned HDB blocks for the seniors in need. The latest project is
Green Hub recycling where our Rotarian volunteers help in
rehabilitation of Sungei Street vendors who were displaced during
development of the area.
Vocational Service Committee with Director Siew Luen as chair is
working on two impactful projects. First is skill development for
ex-offenders and the second is Career development for students with
special needs at Singapore Polytechnic. The Artisan Award is
progressing well except the EYA-The Entrepreneur of the Year Award
which is not likely to happen due to COVID-19.
International Service Committee with Director Varun as chair
have restrictions on overseas project due to no overseas travel,
but they have carried out several initiatives in raising funds and
transferring to those who need most through sister clubs and other
Rotary clubs in the region. Some of these are, S$ 3000.00 to Rizal
West for Batang Batad matching challenge, RM project in Malaysia,
contribution of MYR 10,000.00 , Lebanon disaster Relief Fund
through local NGO, supply of 50 boxes each of US dollar 35 for
medicine and essentials, Contribution of MYR 38,000.00 to RC LIkas
Bay for Sabah COVID-19 response fund.
Youth Service Committee with Dr Ganesh Ramalingam as chair, has
many feathers in their cap, 1st ILTC 2020 in July, first ever
online camp was successfully organized. Accendo mental health
project transiting from phase two to phase three, Clean Hands ASEAN
project is good expansion mode. We have almost finalized MOU with
Rotaract Clubs to ensure Rotaractors decide carefully and remain
with us in view of new RI regulations. A new project of mentoring
Rotaractors in career choices is being piloted.
We had several requests and opportunities to join various Rotary
alliances. After careful thought and approval of the Board decided
to join JWD, John Wheeler Davidson an international group of 13
Rotary clubs in 12 countries which were founded and chartered by
John Davidson. We have joined Synergy Rotary friendship Alliance of
13 clubs from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Indonesia,
Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, and Sri Lanka.
We are representing all the clubs from District 3110 in this
synergy and friendship alliance. DG Rajamohan Munisamy introduced
RC Singapore in the last meeting which was held on 13th December
2020, attended by 380 participants and RI President Holder Knaack
as the keynote speaker.
In closing, I am pleased to state that that we are on the right
track and will present further reports on our progress in third
club assembly on 27 January 2020. Thank you!”

The Guide to Daily Living Before doing the things we want to do,
consider first, the
Precepts of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and
act upon them:
First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?
Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?
Third: Have I given my best to my work?
Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?
The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of
Rotary.
The Four-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendship?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
