Re: Finland
In 1997, the number of the provinces (Finnish: läänit) in Finland was reduced from
twelve to six. The relocation notes in the current development in Edition 23 of the
Dewey Decimal Classification reflects this change. Also in 1997, nineteen regions
(Finnish: maakunta) were created as second-order administrative units. On January
1, 2010, the provinces were abolished. The regions are now first-order
administrative units.

Proposed development
We contacted the Embassy of Finland to get a map showing the regions and their
relationships to the former provinces. Unfortunately, the embassy did not have
such a map, and advised us to use the maps we had identified on the web.
The maps given in the appendix were used to determine the boundaries of the
regions and in which former province they were located. The form of the name of
3
the region was first based on the form given on the Finland page in the CIA’s World
Factbook. We then asked the National Library of Finland to review the draft, with
special attention to the form of name. The form of name given in the exhibit is that
approved by Ms. Eeva Karki, Librarian at the National Library of Finland.
Because most of the development is new, there is no underlining.
