Where are we going?

Key challenge :

To facilitate the development, set-up and successful completion of large, well-funded research studies across

Scotland.

Page 6: From Here to Where…? Prof Stephen Lawrie, Acting Director.

Network’s renewed aims:

Primary goals:– To increase the amount of mental health research– To increase the number of people participating in

mental health research studies

Broadening the scope:– Trials at various stages of development– Epidemiological, genetic and imaging studies– A broad view of health services research

Imbalance of resources

Recent figures show that mental health research received 6.5% of the total research funding compared with 25% for research for cancer and 15% for neurological diseases.

Future directions for the Network (1)

Focus on helping researchers develop their ideas for treatment trials and related studies by strengthening the Protocol Development Service.

Actively encourage the development of PDGs in key areas such as depression (primary and secondary care), substance misuse and developmental disorders.

Page 18: From Here to Where…? Prof Stephen Lawrie, Acting Director.

Future directions for the Network (2)

Work more closely with:– The Mental Health Research Networks in England

and Wales– Topic-specific Networks such as the Scottish

Primary Care Research Network and the Scottish Dementia Research Network

– NHS R&D Departments– Research organisations such as the WTCRFs

Page 19: From Here to Where…? Prof Stephen Lawrie, Acting Director.

Future directions for the Network (3)

Consult with:– Clinicians and researchers– Psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, counsellors,

physiotherapists…– Patients, carers and the public– Industry

on how the Network can best engage and support them in research.
