The Society for Failure Analysis was established in the year 2006 with the
patronage from many eminent experts with a mission to reduce failures that are estimated to cost 3-4% of GDP in a developing country. The Mumbai Chapter of SFA started in November 2014 to serve industries interested to investigate root
cause of failures and thus improve the quality of products. To fulfil this objective the society organises lectures, workshops, clinics, seminars and courses related
failure analysis. The details of the activities of the Mumbai chapter are listed on the web page: www.sfa.mes.ac.in.
The AGM of SFA Mumbai Chapter was held on September 28, 2019 at the Conclave of PHCET Rasayani. The meeting was presided over by Mr. C. Tandi Ex
ED IEOT and Chairman of the SFA Mumbai Chapter. At the outset Chairman & Vice Chairman welcomed the members. After that the Minutes of the previous AGM meeting was read and confirmed. The activities of SFA Mumbai Chapter
was presented in the Secretary’s report. The Statement of Account was also presented. The Chairman Mr. C. Tandi informed that he has shifted to his native
place in Orissa and expressed his inability to continue as the Chairman. The AGM expressed its sincere gratitude to the services rendered by Mr. C. Tandi as the Chairman. The AGM unanimously decided to elect Mr. T.S. Kathayat,
President of Welspun as the new Chairman. It was also decided that in the absence of the Treasurer Mr. Niraj Kumar due to his preoccupation, Mr. Parikshit
Gupta be appointed as Treasurer. The meeting ended with the vote of thanks.

The tube and pipe industries are adopting new technologies and latest trends to produce
welded and seamless pipes from steel and metal alloys. The industry faces challenges to
prevent the degradation of its ageing infrastructure that results in failure. The big issue of the
metal pipe and tube industries is to get skilled man power conversant with
welding,NDT,corrosion ,fracture mechanics based testing, coating and the root cause failure
analysis. This interaction will provide an opportunity for technological institutes to
understand and bridge the gap between what they teach and what this industry demands.
The objective of this program is to bring together industries, professional societies and
engineering institutes to consider challenges of pipe and tube industries and draw a road
map on how to develop skills in engineers to meet the requirements of this sector through
internships and innovative projects offered by industries and professional societies.

Engineering Institutes are facing challenges to meet the rising expectations of stake holders. The challenge today is to prepare work ready technical personnel by offering quality technical education . The way forward for non autonomous institutes is to provide training and learning materials that cover the gap between syllabus prescribed by the Universities and the graduates attributes required by the industries. This training is a step in this direction to prepare students who meet the career challenges & opportunities through special lectures related to their course. Metals & Alloys are widely used for a variety of industrial applications. This training workshop will provide an outstanding opportunity to the students pursuing diploma / degree in engineering & professionals working in production & quality assurance in industries to develop skill & sound understanding of all aspects of metallography that is practiced on shop floor but extremely difficult to learn on the job.

ONE DAY NATIONAL WORKSHOP
On
“Structural Integrity Assessment
And Failure Analysis Of Linepipes
used for transportation of Oil and
Gas”
22nd June, 2018
SFA Mumbai Chapter PHCET Rasayani
At
Seminar Hall PCE Panvel,
Navi Mumbai,
Organized by
Invitation
The Society for Failure Analysis and the
Mahatma Education Society’s, PCE Panvel and
PHCET Rasayani invite you to attend the
National workshop on " Structural Integrity
Assessment And Failure Analysis Of Linepipes
used for transportation of Oil and Gas " to be held
on June 22nd , 2018 at the PCE, Panvel
About the Workshop
Both the onshore and offshore pipelines
experience extensive corrosion damage that
reduces their pressure carrying capability
besides degrading resistance to fatigue cracking.
The probability of failure increases when pipelines become aged. Failure of pressurised
pipes carrying hydrocarbons may result in fire and explosion and cause significant damage to
people and environment. ANSI/ASME codes
and standards developed decade backs appear
over conservative. This has resulted in growing
industry demand to consider the development of methodologies for integrity assessment, failure
analysis and failure avoidance.
To avoid catastrophic failure, understanding of
fracture behavior under static and dynamic
conditions of loading has become a key issue in
their design. Engineering Critical Analysis
(ECA), Assessment and Fitness for Purpose
(FFP) have been introduced to determine the acceptability of defects. Stress assisted
environment cracking (Hydrogen
Embrittelement and Corrosion Fatigue) is one of
the major factors that affects structural integrity
and safety of pipelines and are required to be considered during fitness for purpose
assessment.

The task for International Students Olympiad this year was Development of the forging process to manufacture a forged (flashless forging preferred) part given below for Railways using the QForm Software by a cost-effective production process with
the minimum allowances assigned.
Hot-rolled round bars with a diameter of 140 mm or 180 mm are provided to perform the process. Two hydraulic presses with the accumulative drive are also available: P1 (110 MN, 40 mm/s), P2 (80 MN, 120 mm/s).
• The final evaluation of the work is influenced by the quality, validity and
applied approaches in decision-making, including:
• Selection of equipment (performance evaluation, power and energy parameters).
• Analysis of possible defects in the forged piece.
• Analysis of wear resistance and strength of die tooling.
• Selection of the optimal workpiece, selection of forging operations (number of the operations, a die impressions geometry, evaluation of the metal utilization factor, deforming force (forging load), etc.).
• Six (6) hours are given to complete the task.
